The georeferenced image doesn't draw for me in either of the two web maps you are using in this Story Map: http://www.arcgis.com/home/webmap/viewer.html?webmap=c0b3304076c1421caa39fda33de402d9 http://www.arcgis.com/home/webmap/viewer.html?webmap=3a2e910fbf464709b9aad45145d6e948 Your image service is not accessible over the web via the protocol you are using to access it. http://ntob-gis:6080/arcgis/rest/services/Sauk_badger/ImageServer Perhaps contact Esri Tech Support on how best to configure and access that service. Story Map Series does support displaying the legend in the description panel instead of as a dropdown control but only if you use the Tabbed or Bulleted layout options. Moving the legend into the narrative panel is not supported in the Side Accordion option you are using. Story Map Series doesn't support providing a dynamic list for selecting layers in the description panel. Authors who want to provide a checkable layer list sometimes do that by creating a separate app for their map that does have a checkable layer ''table of contents" using one of the other ArcGIS Online configurable apps or the Web App Builder, and then embedding that app into their Story Map Series. However, we'd recommend not attempting to provide checkable layer lists in your Story Maps. Turning layers on and off via lists isn't all that intuitive for the general reader. Instead we'd suggest authoring the maps that you think your readers will want to see and using different tabs or entries in your Map Series to present them, so that your readers don't need to modify the maps themselves. Hope that helps Rupert

Hi, thanks for the update. It would be better to ask in ArcGIS Online subsection because you'd do that mapping in a web map. You could then use that web map in a story map, such as Story Map Journal. ArcGIS Online web maps have several options for adding points from files or feeds. Rupert

Could you describe a bit more what you are looking to do? For example if you are making a Story Map Tour or Story Map Shortlist using photos, those apps will automatically read the geotags in those photos to locate them in your story map. Rupert

Here's a Story Map Journal about parks and different locations in those spaces that I think is a really good pattern. The authors used story actions in each section to let people browse different locations in each park. Wellington's Treasured Spaces / Mahere Whenua Kura o Pōneke http://wcc.maps.arcgis.com/apps/MapJournal/index.html?appid=cc9b48a06b324b538bec40d1b221e48d Also perhaps browse some of the story maps that have been created about botanical gardens. Here's an ArcGIS Online search that pulls some of them up, sorted by number of views: https://www.arcgis.com/home/search.html?q=story%20map%20botanical%20garden&t=content&focus=applications&start=1&sortOrde… Rupert

Hi Kelly See this post for info about showing multiple photos per place (not possible yet): Add more images/video to Shortlist Story Map That enhancement is down the road still. There are no plans to add a splash page to Shortlist. I would definitely not try and embed one story map inside another for what you are describing. Your project sounds like it would be better to keep things really simple. Rupert

Hi Nanci It's not possible to add additional images or videos to the places in a Shortlist but that's an enhancement we want to make in a future release because it is requested a lot, especially multiple pictures. We are also planning to add the ability to have multiple pictures per place into a future release of Story Map Tour. Note that some authors work around this limitation by creating composite images where one image shows multiple photos. Some examples of map tours that use this technique include Utility Box Art, Bee Branch Watershed Green Alley Program, and Timisoara: a walk through history. This is a 'low-tech' solution but can work well because your readers can see all the pictures at once side-by-side and don't need to interact with the story to switch between pictures. If you do this in a Shortlist or Map Tour you can use the same composite image for the thumbnail, like in the Bee Branch and Timisoara examples above, or use a different image for the thumbnails, like in the SLO Utility Box Art example above. Note the latter approach, using different images for the thumbnails requires that either your thumbnails or your main images (or both) are accessed on the web via links. You can edit the web map used in your Shortlist to add additional 'supporting' layers into the map. Supporting layers are displayed by the Shortlist using the symbology and popups that you define for them in the web map. So if you want to have features in your Shortlist map that people can click on, you can add them via the web map. The features representing the places in your Shortlist (i.e. the points corresponding to the pictures in the tabs) can't be given popups though: clicking on those features always just opens that place in the tab area. Hope that helps. Rupert

Hi Kelly Sounds like an interesting project. Story Map Shortlist is based on point features. You could have a tab for each month and show that month's plants as points in each tab: either by adding them interactively in the Builder or driving your Shortlist from a feature layer in a web map that you keep up-to-date, using the tab_name field in the data to control which tab each point feature is displayed in. You could add polygon features as layer(s) into the underlying web map used by your Shortlist so the points get drawn on top of those polygons and show what they are, but in the Builder you can't configure a Shortlist to show different supporting layers for different tabs. Supporting layers don't support a tab_name column to control the appearance of their features on the map (it's an interesting idea though). You would have to self-host and customize the Shortlist in order to have a different supporting layers appear for different tabs. I'll see if we can post some tips for doing that. If you want your readers to be able to switch between different tabs and see different maps or layers for which you have complete control over what is displayed, you might also have a look at the Story Map Series app template. This isn't data-driven and doesn't have the thumbnails in the tabs like Shortlist does, but it does let you easily configure exactly what you want each tab to display, including different layers and extents for different tabs, or even completely different web maps for different tabs. Hope that helps. Rupert

Hi Matt, When you download the source code for an app and self-host it, that app will display any embedded content, such as embedded story maps, the same as it does if you launch the app hosted in ArcGIS Online. So if you want to self-host a story map, you don't need to self-host the source code for any story maps or other apps that are embedded in your story (unless you want to apply customizations to them). What's happening with your self-hosted code is that you are launching it via HTTPS, so any embedded content, like embedded story maps, won't draw unless they are referenced via HTTPS when embedded. So if I launch your self-hosted app via HTTP, the embedded content works OK I think, at least for the first two tabs: http://gis.co.scott.mn.us/2040/ To fix this, you can edit your app in ArcGIS Online to update the URLs of embedded content to reference it via HTTPS instead of HTTP. This will then work when the app is launched via your self-hosted code. This assumes that the content, i.e. the story maps, you are embedding support HTTPS. If your embedded content does not support HTTPS access, then you could still just deploy/share the URL of your self-hosted app using HTTP, like the URL I posted above. But the best practice is to support HTTPS where possible by only embedding content via HTTPS, to avoid the situation where content doesn't load . Here are some blog posts related to embedding content like story maps inside story maps: https://community.esri.com/community/gis/web-gis/storymaps/content?filterID=contentstatus%5Bpublished%5D~objecttype~obje… Hope that helps Rupert

Hi Corryne If you want to create a Shortlist by preparing the places in a layer in a web map, such as a feature layer or spreadsheet based layer (see FAQ about that), the fields that you use to specify the image URL for the large image and the thumbnail image for each place have to point directly at the image, not a page containing an image, which is the case with your Flickr URL BlowdryLounge - Denver | Elly EDENS | Flickr . That URL won't work because it is displaying a web page, not a single image. So usually the URL will usually end in an image file extension like .jpg. To get the direct image file URL for any public Flickr image, see these instructions in the Flickr Help:Get the URL of a Flickr photo | Yahoo Help - SLN15714 So if you follow their steps, in Flickr you'll click Download > All Sizes and get to this page for the image above: All sizes | BlowdryLounge - Denver | Flickr - Photo Sharing! and you can then choose the image you want to use, and right click the image that appears to get the URL you need. For example for your image I would use the Small 240 image for the thumbnail: https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4596/38424203824_a8f8316a1b_m.jpg and the Medium 640 for the large image: https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4596/38424203824_a8f8316a1b_z.jpg I did try the original URL you tried for the image stored in the image system you mentioned: https://p.widencdn.net/jdwrm/blowdrylounge---Denver This returns an image that says Preview Not Available if I open that in my web browser, so if you include that URL in a Shortlist, that's the image that the Shortlist will also display. The URL works OK: even though it doesn't end in a file extension like JPG, it still returns an image file so the Shortlist will display it correctly: It's just that the URL you are using is not displaying the image you want. Note. Actually, are you sure you want to create your Shortlist by assembling the places in a web map layer first? Given that your images are all in Flickr now, you could just start the Shortlist Builder and import all those Flickr images directly into your Shortlist to create the places, and then add the text descriptions and organize the places into tabs interactively in the Shortlist Builder. This will automatically use the geotags for your photos in Flickr to locate the places (assuming in your Flickr privacy settings you are not hiding the EXIF data for pictures). It will also read in the captions in Flickr automatically and use them as text descriptions,. To import your Flickr images directly into Shortlist they have to be added into a public album. You'd then click Import > Flickr and type in EllyMaps to get the images. You can try this with my Flickr account (type in Rupert Essinger). My Flickr pics have captions and most of them have geotags too, so you can build a Shortlist really easily just by importing them. So it is easy to create a Shortlist from Flickr images without preparing any data beforehand. You can also create a Shortlist by adding a point layer into a web map, such as from a feature layer or spreadsheet, create a Shortlist from that web map, and then upload Flickr images directly into those places in the Shortlist Builder, or upload images directly from your computer. This workflow doesn't require that you use the Shortlist data schema or add any URLs manually into your data. It's a handy way to make a Shortlist from your existing geodata without having to modify that data in anyway first. The only workflow where you'd prepare your data using the Shortlist data schema, including manually entering the URLs for the images you want each place to use, is if you want to define everything in your Shortlist ahead of time so you don't need to do any interactive editing in the Shortlist Builder. With this workflow, you have the option of driving your Shortlist directly from that data in the web map, so it reflects the edits or additions you make to the data in the web map. See that FAQ I mentioned for more about that. Rupert

Hi Emily Embedding a story map, or other ArcGIS Online app or map, into a web page is a good way to ensure that your intended audience sees what you created. Embedding an ArcGIS Online map or app in a web page doesn't change the source of that content: it is still hosted in ArcGIS Online, so it won't affect the throughput of your web server. We have some examples of story maps embedded in web pages to give you some ideas of what these look like. In the Story Maps Gallery, see Format > Embedded in the menu on the side, or just click this link to launch the Gallery with that filter applied: Gallery | Story Maps There are some good tips about embedding in this blog post: https://community.esri.com/community/gis/web-gis/storymaps/blog/2016/06/06/arcgis-blog-embedding-story-maps-in-website Rupert

Thanks for the note Richard. If you were OK with omitting videos it should work OK from a Google Sheet. Alternatively, you could add the step of uploading the CSV file into the web map used by the Map Tour whenever the sheet is updated, replacing the existing CSV based layer. Rupert
