To customize a Story Map app template, you'd just host the source code for the app on your own server, and then make any changes to the code you like. Your story map instance and the web map(s) and other spatial data it displays remain hosted in ArcGIS. You'd then just point your customized source code at the appID of the story map instance you want your customized app to point at. For a good intro to that process, see the If You're A Developer section of the Resources | Story Maps page. Rupert

Could you share the web map you were trying to use, assuming the info on it is OK to be shared, so we can take a look at the data? I saw your other post. I've marked that one as answered and added a link to this one. Hope that's OK. Rupert

Hi I want that function in Shortlist too so you can add supporting layers that appear/disappear based on which tab you click. Shortlist currently doesn't support tab-specific display of supporting layers. If you are a developer, or know a friendly one (like all the ones on Geonet), it is possible to add that into your Shortlist by customizing the code. Story Map Series lets you set up tabs that show different layers, different layers, or even completely different maps, when readers click on them, but Series doesn't show places in a side tab like Shortlist does. However it may be worth looking at too if you want to show a different set of layers on a different maps. Rupert

Could you let us know which Story Map app template you are using? There are several of them although only two (Shortlist and Map Tour) let you move pics around. This might be a good one to contact Esri Support about directly. so they could help track down what might be going on: Esri Support Home . Rupert

Hi Della. Your other two links don't open because you need to include http or https at the beginning of those links. You could publish the LCMS Campus Guide map using the Story Map Basic web app to give it a slicker looking user interface. See this page: Story Map Basic | Story Maps Alternatively, how about using Story Map Tour to make a campus tour with pictures too. Rupert

Hi Andrew, Sorry about the prob. Can you confirm you are using the Side Panel layout option in Map Tour you are using (Side Panel, Three Panel or Integrated). And also how are you authoring your Story Map Tour? I noticed a similar issue recently in a Map Tour that I created by uploading a CSV file that also contained some HTML formatting like yours does. I was using the Three Panel layout, (although I suspect this issue may occur irrespective of the layout being used). For some places I wasn't able to add any additional text when I went to edit a caption, although it let me make edits that didn't increase, or that decreased, the character count. We'll have a look at that. Rupert

Hi Andrew, Currently Shortlist is hardwired to just display the thumbnail in the small display/mobile view to work around a performance issue we were encountering on iOS. Your post reminds us though to revisit that to see if we still need to apply that restriction. Rupert

You could also create a web map containing a layer of features where you include a URL to your story maps, which you'd expose in the popups for the features. Your users could then click on a feature, and in the popup they can click the link to open the story map. In this example web map I configured the popups in the ArcGIS Online Map Viewer so that people can click the image in the popup to open the URL. You could then include that web map in a story map. For example, for a simple display of a web map you could use Story Map Basic. This example Basic story map displays a web map with popups configured to include clickable links. Rupert

For example in this Cascade, click the Pinecrest Creek bookmark in the header after proceeding beyond the cover page, and then scroll down to the Historical development immersive section to see a nice use of the vertical transition between views containing images to present a swipe type before and after: Connect the Drops in Pinecrest Creek https://ottawa.maps.arcgis.com/apps/Cascade/index.html?appid=ba1269c787c443f6b3b358c3c1067aca That same approach is also used in this example with web maps: Mapping Distress in the Arizona Sun Corridor http://geodesist.maps.arcgis.com/apps/Cascade/index.html?appid=89cc523b19be42e49eefeaf02483c39e Rupert

Ideally if you don't want the WA state map to be cropped you could see if your illustrator could make a version of the image where the state is smaller and more centered in the image. The size and shape you are using, 2000x1000 is OK: it is approximately the same shape as a wide screen monitor. You could also make some test images yourself of different sizes to see how they get cropped. But the bottom line with cover page images used for Story Map Crowdsource, Cascade and Map Tour is that the images will get cropped because we fill the available display space with the image so you shouldn't count on the sides or top/bottom of the image always being fully visible. Your image is very cool though. You could also use it, for example, in tweets promoting your story, and or on a web page on which the story is promoted. Rupert

Yes, you can embed story maps inside story maps. See: https://community.esri.com/community/gis/web-gis/storymaps/blog/2016/05/21/arcgis-blog-embedding-a-story-map-within-a-story-map A useful alternative to embedding a Swipe app in a Cascade story is to add an immersive section in your Cascade and use one of the transition effects to provide a swipe-style transition between two different views in the section. John Nelson on our team has created some useful 'How to Cascade' guides and one of them covers transitions. You can find them all here: https://community.esri.com/community/gis/web-gis/storymaps/blog/2016/11/29/arcgis-blog-how-to-cascade but in particular see this one: How to Cascade: Transitions. Rupert

For example, here's a really nice story map from our friends at the USDA NRCS. The cover page image looks OK when the story is maximized on a wide-screen monitor, but the graphical elements on the left and right, and the birds head, get cropped if you resize your browser window to simulate viewing it at non-maxmized browser window sizes or if you view if on a mobile device: http://nrcs.maps.arcgis.com/apps/Cascade/index.html?appid=d3c4df707a98448d87b6cda7a0dbddcc

That's not possible in the Story Map apps except for Story Map Basic, which does support URL parameters to go to specific map locations. In Story Map Tour you can use the Index parameter in a URL to take readers to a particular point in a tour. See this blog post for more about handy URL parameters. https://community.esri.com/community/gis/web-gis/storymaps/blog/2017/07/27/story-maps-developers-corner-using-story-map-url-parameters In Story Map Series and Story Map Journal you can create Story actions in the narrative text that display certain parts of the map, or show certain locations (either existing places in the map or raw coordinates you author), when your readers click them. See this blog for more about Story actions: https://community.esri.com/community/gis/web-gis/storymaps/blog/2018/05/02/arcgis-blog-using-story-actions-in-story-map-series Rupert

I think your image size is OK. Whatever size your image is, it usually won't appear in full because it gets cropped inside the display window. Image content, like WA state in your case, that you want to be mostly uncropped should ideally be in the center of the image. I personally don't think people will mind if the state appears cropped in your image. It's a fun illustration of the story content and intention and I don't think readers will always expect to see it in full. Rupert

Very cool image. As story maps can be displayed all sorts of different devices and different web browser window sizes, images that you use for cover pages will get cropped at the sides at certain display sizes/shapes. So that the cover image always fills the available screen area and look as good as possible, we don't provide a 'Fit' option for cover images in the same way that we do for images in, for example, the 'main stage' area of Map Journal and Map Series. For this reason, it is best if cover images don't contain text, diagrammatic/infographic elements or other essential visual elements, especially at the sides. In the case of your image, some of the state will be cropped on the right hand side at some display sizes/shapes. Hope that helps. Rupert
