I have also had that problem in the past month. Something about the way you register the data is a little wonky with ags. did you try to register your data both of the different ways they offer (register and register as managed)? You should get a warning in arcmap as you publish if the data is going to be copied. Also you should try the publish path where you only create a .sd file and hold off on the publishing directly from arcmap. use the .sd to publish from the web manager then. I can confirm that i have been able to publish a ql layer. It just took alot of tinkering. and when it finally worked i don't really know what exactly did the trick.

For my reports i collect business parameters from the user and then i use the js api to get a feature extent based on those params. So i still have the api dependency, just no map. I then serialize that extent into my homegrown webmap class which serializes just as the js api would. I think if i was doing it with python i would still need to get those map params to the gp tool. I like the esri webmap structure as i think it accurately and succinctly defines all of the components needed to print a great map. I just wish there was an easier way to create that format when you don't have a webmap.

Humm... that sounds like a licensing nightmare. reminds me of the old days of using a webservice and automation to open an arcmap process.

so you are able to undo/redo edit operations that involve feature geometry changes? How does it track what was done during each edit in order to rollback?

Don't have much in the way of an answer but i'm struggling with a similar issue. I want to provide rollback support for my users when they edit in my js map app. I have read the it can be done but must be implemented at the client level. Is there something like a guid that esri passed back when a successful edit is done? Or do i have to remember the edit to support undo? I see exampled of redo/undo but they are always for client-side graphics and not for true feature editing.

I think all of the esri samples assume you have the api and a web map. I kind of like rolling the classes myself because i know what json they will generate. and i think esri did a good job, in this case, of publishing and documenting the format for the request. However, mapping the specification to classes in .NET is not as straightforward as it seems when you consider that different types of layers have different request formats. So you have to create a type/subtype relationship to encapsulate the inheritance between properties that all layers have and those of specific layers. In the end it looks like a tutorial on OOP principles

I think you can do this via Query Layer. In ArcMap go to File>Add Data> Add Query Layer The query layer will not mess with your table and will not register it with sde as far as i can tell. You simply point to the table and tell it which columns are lat/lon

I have the same requirement. I need to fire off a report that contains a map but i do not have a map in my application. I went with the second approach you mentioned - i created my own class structure to replicate what needs to be in the web_map_as_json request and then i serialize that with JSON.NET to create my request. But as i was creating that code there was a little voice in my head saying, 'you shouldn't have to be doing this, surely they did it for you somewhere'

I seem to recall at some point reading about the possibility of writing python-like script tools in C# instead of python. Is this possible at 10.1?

the deprecation doc seems to indicate that these adf dlls were left in for back compat with 10.0 services. I realize that editing via custom web services is going away (at least the dcom route) and that i probably need to refactor. But i figured i would at least try to breathe life into the old code first to see if it can still work. Oddly enough, after adding in those 10.1 adf dlls, my compile is now blocked by this line: IQueryFilter queryFilter = new QueryFilterClass(); Something to do with not having an initializer. I will check on those classes you mentioned Matt

I think we are going to go the route of converting to the new native python toolboxes rather than the older 10.0 way of py scripts tied to tools. It seems esri is going in that direction so might as well get on board. if we can publish them directly from python that will take desktop out of the picture and be very nice. I can understand wanting the script to be runable because it makes debugging a little easier because you are in arcmap. But there are scripts that are just too complex to be setup in arcmap to run every time you want to make a small change.

Hopefully this will be addressed in sp1 with a way to deploy scripts directly from python. The idea of esri "running" my script and determining if it will work and is optimized is anathema to the development process. I have over 10 years experience in jumping through hoops to get software to work - that is being challenged now. I guess one way around this (that we are kicking around now) is to publish a (basically) blank python script the way esri suggests (via map results) and then hunt down where ags has copied and hidden the script and go there and edit the script to be what you want. That strategy is probably not going to work well if you have to modify input/output parameters.

I'm upgrading a 10.0 application to 10.1 and i noticed that the ESRI.ArcGIS.ADF dlls are still available to reference from the GAC. Should i be relying on these or are they going to be deprecated after 10.1? I saw in the deprecation plan that the editing capabilities of the ADF will go away. But can i still use those dlls safely for the foreseeable future? My code uses Connection and Connection.AGS to make feature edits inside of web services via an SOE.
