Is it too much to ask for the metadata to be gathered from the only spatial column present in the base table? So now I have to revert back to sde command line? How many more versions is that going to be around?

Sql server. Geometry type. I am creating the view using catalog. I only modify the where clause, not fields. Are you saying that views created with sde command line are different than views created in catalog? I thought we were supposed to abandon command line?

AGS/SDE 10.1 direct connect I can create a spatial view and it renders fine in catalog/arcmap/ags. But if i modify the sql OR if a situation arises that makes my view devoid of records then all of the sudden sde and ags get really 'stupid' and have no clue what my geometry type or coord sys are for that view. my ags map service fails and ags reports that it has no support for this geometry type Am i to believe that a spatial view MUST always have at least one record in it? I work with data that expires after a certain time. So as time elapses records become removed from a view such that at some points in time there will be no data that satisfies the view. When that happens everything goes downhill.

At 10.1, it is normal for a Spatial View, or for that matter any table or database view with a spatial column, to initially show up as a table. Once you click it, ArcGIS will read the first record(s?) and determine the geometry type and show it in the catalog tree. This behavior is because ArcGIS can't "know" the feature/geometry type beforehand, as it isn't "stored" like in a table registered with an ESRI geodatabase, where such system metadata is stored in the ArcSDE Repository. Here is the issue I am seeing. I can create a spatial view and it renders fine in catalog and ags. But if i modify the sql OR if a situation arises that makes my view devoid of records then all of the sudden sde and ags get really 'stupid' and have no clue what my geometry type or coord sys are for that view. Am i to believe that a spatial view MUST always have at least one record in it? I work with data that expires after a certain time. So as time elapses records become removed from a view such that at some points in time there will be no data that satisfies the view. When that happens everything goes downhill.

AGS 10.1 REST api has an Export Web Map task that you can send a request to and get a print output. js api has a Print Task that you can put in your code to make printing easier. I'm going to assume that the js api Print Task simply calls the REST api ExportWebMap Task. Is that a safe assumption? If yes, then why is it that the Print Task only seems to support a subset of the things that ExportWebMap does? Like scalebar options, for instance, in the Print Task docs they tell you to set scalebarUnit But in the REST Api you get : "scaleBarOptions": { "metricUnit": "kilometers" , "metricLabel": "km", "nonMetricUnit": "miles" , "nonMetricLabel": "mi" } Why the discrepency? Is it just because the Print Task is not full-featured yet? If that is the case do i have to craft my own Web_Map_as_JSON string in order to access these 'hidden' properties?

10.1 sp1 ags .net I created a custom ExportWebMap Task as outlined here: http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/index.html#//0154000005n1000000 In my custom mxd layout I have two scalebars - one shows miles the other show feet. When i generate my print output all scalebars show miles. How can i get the scalebar to show feet?

almost seems like there should be 'types' of gp tools - those that run in desktop and those that are designed, from the ground up, to be run as ags gp services.

I noticed a huge list of fixes in the 10.2 release here: http://downloads.esri.com/support/downloads/other_/102-IssuesAddressedList.pdf Obviously these same fixes are going to be include in the next service pack for 10.1 right? Right? i'm surprised that i didn't catch the 10.1 sp2 release announcement. I'm on the RSS feeds and watch the blogs quite diligently. ESRI wouldn't force people to go to 10.2 just to get fixes for a product they already have installed (10.1 sp1) right? Because many organizations view that '.X' update to be a 'major' release and upgrading to that requires more time and duty than a simple service pack to a product that is already installed.

I want to have an info window popup when a user hovers over a feature in my graphic layer and go away when they stop hovering. I have that working. My issue is that some of my infoWindows have links in them that i would like the user to be able to click on and navigate to. Is it possible to have the window stay open such that a user could get to that link? Right now when they move the mouse to try to get to the link the infowindow goes away because they are no longer hovering on the feature itself. Any suggestions?

after a little digging i think there is yet another option - just call the rest endpoint from C# passing in variables as an HttpWebRequest. I suppose for this to work my requirements would not have to be to exotic so that the generic rest api endpoint would suffice.
