Janie, No, you do not need to uninstall ArcSDE 10.0 to upgrade the existing sde 10.0 gdb to 10.1. As the upgrade is done using ArcGIS Desktop, the ArcSDE s/w plays no role in the upgrade here. However, I would suggest that once all the sde GDBs are upgraded to 10.1, you should install ArcSDE 10.1 as well. It helps to have all the softwares at the same version. Regards,

Courtney, Reconcile/Post all the versions(if you have any) and then COMPRESS the sde geodatabase. This should reflect the changes in the tables at the database end. HowTo: Compress a versioned database to state 0: http://support.esri.com/en/knowledgebase/techarticles/detail/29160 http://esriaustraliatechblog.wordpress.com/2012/10/08/compressing-the-arcsde-geodatabase/ Regards,

James, One of the other main difference between the two views created using the Desktop interface and using SDE Command line tools, is that -- "Views created in enterprise geodatabases using the 'Create Database View' tool are not registered with the geodatabase." If you don't want to select an unique identifier field every time while adding that view to ArcMap, try the below workflow: Launch ArcMap-->go to File-->Add data-->Add Query layer-->connect to the geodatabase-->select the database view table-->Run the query select * from (table_name) -->validate-->check show advanced options box-->next-->the unique identifer's should already be identified-->ok. You can continue using the sde command line to create the view for now, however as William mentioned, the command lines will be deprecated in the next MAJOR release. Regards,

Tim, 1. It is not necessary to install ArcSDE starting from 10.1...you only need to install ArcSDE if you want to use the ArcSDE Commandline tools or the ArcSDE services. 2. You can use your existing ArcSDE license if they have not expired w/o any issues.

Doug, Few things to check: 1. Make sure you add the entries in both the Services file manually. 2. Make sure the dbinit file is modified after creating the service and before starting it. (Step 7 in the link I referred) ** Also go to the the SDE Home--> etc folder and check the error in the sde_logfile (sde_newdrumisd). Maybe that would give us more information. If this still doesn't help, my suggestion would be to contact the ESRI Tech Support for better troubleshooting. Regards,

Doug, Can you confirm if this is a "Distributed Install-- ArcSDE on 1 machine and Oracle on another server)? Considering you mentioned the "-n" option particularly, I am assuming it is a distributed install. The Post Installation wizard cannot be used to create a service in that scenario. A good link for consideration: HowTo: Install ArcSDE on a machine that is remote from the Oracle RDBMS http://support.esri.com/es/knowledgebase/techarticles/detail/23753 Step 5 onwards from the above link should help. Note: Please do mention the complete version of ArcGIS and database, during the initial post, for a better/more applicable response.

If the "SA" user is used, a DBO-Schema geodatabase would be created.

Randy, You don't need to create an ArcSDE service to create the spatial view: A quick tour of views in the geodatabase: http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/index.html#//002q000000r2000000 Example: Creating a spatial view in SQL Server using SQL: http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/index.html#//002q000000r3000000 -------------------------------------- 10.1 onwards, there is no Post Installtion wizard to create new sde service. ArcSDE services need to be created using SDE Commandline tools. Creating an ArcSDE service on Windows using the sdeservice command: http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/index.html#//002q00000044000000 Note: ArcSDE services and ArcSDE Commandline tools will be deprecated in future releases(10.2.1 onwards) Regards,
