Editing data from a database is only possible from ArcGIS 10.2.x on-wards, using a Feature Service. It is not possible to edit the data coming from a simple database using ArcMap. Databases and ArcGIS-- ArcGIS Help (10.2, 10.2.1, and 10.2.2)

ALTER DATABASE Compatibility Level (Transact-SQL) The above link should provide you with information related to the importance and difference between the different SQL Server Compatibility level. From ArcSDE point of view, as per my understanding, as long as the version of the database is supported, it should not be a problem. However maybe someone else may have some more info on this......

Richard Nilsson The PATH variable being discussed here is the Environment Path Variable. Right-Click on 'My Computer'> Properties> Advanced System Settings> Advanced> Environment Variables> Under "System Variables" look for the variable named "Path" As Edward mentioned, there is a limit of 2,048 character and he had exceeded that. These variables should not be modified unless you are sure about what you are doing.

No, you do not need to switch between the 32-bit and 64-bit clients to be first in the path, to use Desktop (32-bit) and ArcGIS Pro (64-bit) on the same machine. You just need to ensure that the 64 bit client is listed first in the path variable and then the 32-bit client is listed.

Yes, this seems to be occurring because of that then. Because of those 5 FCs, the Unregister option is greyed out. If this is feasible, copy those 5 FCs out from that dataset to a File gdb>delete those 5 FCs from the dataset> Now the option to Unregister should be available> Unregister as Versioned> Add those 5 FCs back into the dataset> Register as Versioned. OR Copy the entire Feature Dataset to a File gdb> Delete the dataset from the sde gdb> Copy\Paste it back from the File gdb. Note: Make sure you have a database backup before trying these.

I think this may have been mentioned earlier as well. There are 2 sets of geodatabase repository tables - one for SDE and one for GDB. The sdetable\sdelayer commands are used to register with SDE, but not register with GDB. Creating a spatial view from ArcSDE commands will automatically register the view with SDE, however using ArcCatalog to register with Geodatabase, is to register with both SDE and GDB. Database views are read only, they should NOT be registered with Geodatabase (as registering with Geodatabase needs to create an OBJECTID column).

Is there anyone else connected to that geodatabase\editing while you are performing the compress? Can you disconnect all the users if possible and then try the compress once? Also please provide the version of Desktop being used, SQL Server database version and sde geodatabase version.
