So if I understand you correctly you have a join to a table in a different workspace then the feature class and you want to change the path of the feature class for a layer in the map document but keep the path to the joined table? If this is the case I am finding that this is the behavior at 10 service pack 1. I haven't tested at 10 without service pack 1 and I did a search for known-issues and didn't find any specific to this scenario, but it may be possible it was resolved at service pack 1. @mlecher If I am understanding you correctly you are wanting to update an mxd's layer and joined tables with new data sources as you move from staging to production for example. The findAndReplaceWorkspacePaths should accomplish this. For example let's say all my layer's data sources and tables are in the workspace, "C:\mytest\testing.gdb" and I want to update the source to E:\Production\Production.gdb. I could use the following lines of code to make the change in Python. import arcpy mxd = arcpy.mapping.MapDocument(r"C:\myMXD.mxd") mxd.findAndReplaceWorkspacePaths(r"C:\mytest\testing.gdb", r"E:\Production\Production.gdb") mxd.save() del mxd Not only would the layers update to the new data source, but the stand-alone tables joined to those layers would update to the new data source. If you have tried this and are not getting the same results could you verify you are at service pack 1. Thank you for posting the idea. One thought I had was if you replaced the data source through python could you then recreate the join as well using the Add Join tool? This might help automate the process of changing data sources and recreating the join. ... View more

Thank you for posting the idea along with all your comments for why you feel the OMD is particularly valuable in your work. There are a few reasons we have chosen not to produce object model diagrams for the ArcPy site package. Traditionally Python’s own modules and other 3rd party site packages do not carry Object Model Diagrams. An OMD was provided with arcgisscripting to help customers comfortable with ArcObjects and its Object Model Diagram make the transition to Python. At ArcGIS 10, ArcPy was more than just a name change; it was a change in the way we organized and presented our python implementation, something that is more in line with the idea of a true Python site-package. In addition, major efforts have been made to improve the help for Python at ArcGIS 10. With arcgisscripting, there was limited intellisense and doc strings, so without some visual help directly in front of you, it was very difficult to know what functions and properties existed. The help is also better structured in ArcGIS 10.0 under the topic ‘The ArcPy Site-package’ with a list of all the functions and classes and embedded links between related topics. Thank you for posting the idea. I am hoping I might get clarification from everyone who promoted this idea on what they are specifically looking for. As indicated by DougR, if you are looking to display the world in such a way that the 180 degree meridian is displayed in the center of the data frame when viewing the full extent of the world you can do this by customizing the data frame spatial reference. I have taken a screenshot of my map document with this setting applied. In regards to the second aspect of this request I believe if you right-click the field you wish to report the distinct records and select summarize you will produce a table of distince records with a count of how many times each occurs in the table. Thank you for posting this idea. I am hoping you might clarify this request. If I understand your idea, currently if the data frame is set to a fixed scale, 1:10,000 for example and you double-click a record it will not zoom to that location because zoom to selected is disabled as a result of the fixed scale for the data frame. Instead if you hold Ctl + double-click a row it will pan to the selected record, placing it in the center of the view but maintaing the current fixed extent. Thank you for posting your idea. One way to accomplish this now is to run the tool in batch mode by right-clicking the Tool and selecting "Batch...". You could also accomplish this through python by creating a script tool that excepts multiple values inputs and runs the Coded Value to Domain tool in a loop through each input. ... View more

Thank you for posting the idea. I wanted to clarify the functionality in regards to the Identify Tool. Currently the Identify tool displays the geographic coordinates of the location you identify, not specifically the feature you identify. For points these are nearly the same but not exactly the same given the scale at which you identify the feature.   So to get additional information on this idea, So to confirm that the desired functionality in this idea would be to get the coordinate geometry of the identified feature which would include X, Y, Z and even M? Also would you only want this functionality for point features or polyline and polygon as well? Thank you for posting the idea. I wanted to seek a little clarification on this idea to better understand the exact functionality you are looking for. Currently the identify tool displays the coordinates of the location you identify. It currently has nothing to do with the feature(s) you identify other than the fact that the feature will share some relation geographically to the location you click. See Identifying Features for more information on this. I believe in regards to the coordinates of the point feature this is pretty well covered, but my question is how would you recommend this is represented for polylines or polygons. For these features coordinate geometry is stored with each vertex. Features could have a limitless number of vertices and representing the coordinates of each vertex in the indentify window could become problematic. One thing you might consider as a workaround is instead of a scale bar you could utilize scale text, Insert > Scale Text. This would give you the ability to explicitly print on the map that 1 in =  531 ft. ... View more

In regards to the symbology you might want to check out the arcpy.mapping module function UpdateLayer with the optional parameter symbology_only. With this in python you could loop through mutliple layers in a map document and update the symbology for each layer based on the symbology properties of another layer or layer file. ... View more

You have this ability at ArcGIS 10 by right-clicking an MXD in ArcCatalog, selecting Set Data Source(s), and using the replace all option. For example if all your layers referece feature classes at C:/Data/Data.gdb, but you want to move all the data to C:/NewData/Data.gdb you can replace all the paths with the new path to the geodatabase. You may also want to look at the functionality available with the arcpy.mapping module for python there are a lot of classes and functions that can help you automate this process as well. ...
