We are using both currently. Right now, we are just pushing shapefiles to ArcGIS Online from our Enterprise system. I am working on setting up a second server to share directly from ArcGIS Server to ArcGIS Online as you can not do this with a Federated Portal environment with IWA / PKI.

I have been having an issue with our Citrix users when they access a file geodatabase. The Citrix session keeps connecting to the file GDB and the lock files are hanging up and the user is unable to then edit. Any insight from the Citrix users out there would be helpful! Thanks!!!

Once you federate a server to portal, you have to direct connect to your ArcGIS Server instance via port 6443 to be able to connect to ArcGIS Server. You must bypass the Web Adapter completely

you can create an XML document with just the schema from ArcCatalog, Right Click on your Database, select Export, select XML document. One the dialog box, select Schema only. This will create an XML schema document that can be loaded into an empty GDB / SDE using the import options in the new GDB. hope this helps!

Due to the nature of how Arc keeps tracks of changes(adds and deletes mostly), are you running a regular compact on the database from ArcCatalog? Compacting the database regularly cleans up the underlying system tables and should vastly improve performance.

We're using IWA authentication, and portal respects restrictions as such. But we are configured with a federated GIS Server, and if a publisher sets a web service as public, it's available from the REST URL for the GIS Server. My question is, can i somehow disable the public option when my GIS Publishers publish data? I'd like to make sure they do not inadvertently publish something that can be accessed by non-employees.

I unfortunately can not share our portal, it's a private business, and security is of the utmost importance in our industry. I would recommend contacting Esri Technical support if you have been unable to solve this on your own. Sometimes it can be the simplest of things causing your problem, and the fresh set of eyes is always helpful.

make sure you actually close the config file before you restart, for some reason, that was the only way I could get portal to re-read the file.

I've successfully enabled AD authentication on my portal. This was one of the few steps I had little issue with throughout the setup process. make sure you are clearing your local cache in your browser as well as restarting the portal server. I had an issue when even after being prompted to enter my user name and password, it was still loading the cached page and acted like I wasn't signed in.
