I am using the latest version of ArcMap for desktop. I have a shapefile which is contour lines. I have two shapefiles for adjacent areas of a map. One of the shapefiles has double the number of contour lines as the other shapefile. I understand that I can display a reduced number of contour lines by using a definition query, but I would like the actual file to contain fewer lines and be more similar to the other shapefile. Any advice on how to do this is greatly appreciated. The shapefile I want to reduce contains 673,835 lines in the attribute table and is 125 MB

Thanks Abdullah, I checked the things you mentioned and they were ok. I think one or both of the files were corrupted. Fortunately I was able to replace the files and the new files displayed fine.

I have two shapefiles, polygons, representing adjacent areas on a map, if I Zoom to Layer on either layer, that layer will show on the map but the other layer will not. Both shapefile have: Projected Coordinate System: NAD_1983_UTM_Zone_15N Projection: Transverse_Mercator Geographic Coordinate System: GCS_North_American_1983 Datum: D_North_American_1983 I may have "projected" one of the shapefiles and may have projected it incorrectly. Does anybody have any idea what is wrong here? Or how I can fix it?

Thank you, I finally took your initial advice about uninstalling. I uninstalled and re-installed Python and then from the Windows Control Panel, Programs and Features, Uninstall or change a program, I selected ArcGIS 10.4.1 for Desktop and clicked Uninstall/Change which popped up a window which gave me the option to "Repair" the ArcGIS installation and now it is working perfectly.

I tried >>> print("hey") and >>>print ("hey") and still nothing. I tried to look up the commands for import sys using the ArcMap Python window but I didn't find anything different from what you showed me. Should I use parens around the commands in the ArcMap Python window?

Thanks Dan, I typed the following commands into the Python window in ArcMap. I hit the Return Key after each line. I typed each line from you answer, then I re-started the computer but, when I type >>> print "test" and press return, I don't get any response from the Python window. I assume I am missing a step? >>> import sys
>>> sys.path
>>> sys.path 'C:\\Python27\\ArcGIS10.4\\lib'
>>> sys.path 'C:\\Python27\\ArcGIS10.4\\lib\\plat-win'

My python scripts were running fine and then I upgraded from ArcGIS for Desktop - ArcMap 10.3 to 10.4.1 Now when I open a Python window and type >>> print "test" nothing happens when I type >>> import os >>> print os.sys.path nothing happens. I think ArcMap is looking for Python in the wrong location. How can I fix this? I have this folder on my Windows 7 computer: C:\Python27\ArcGIS10.4

Thank you for the link about Printing complex PDF, I will read that info. I have a DesignJet 5500 and I heard that printing to the printer via the network is a good way to good but I haven't tried it. The printer is hooked up to the network but since I also have the parallel cable, I never tried the network. I will test it and see if either option works better or faster.

If you are generally making a PDF for web viewing, maybe the "flatten" defaults are different for printing on paper.

Thanks Rebecca, I have Acrobat XI Pro and I did not know that it had the tools to flatten a PDF. I looked at it this morning and found the tools. Thank you very much. Even if I end up using the script because it is fast, I can try flattening the pdf after it is created by the script. Do you use the default settings for flatten or do you have any tips for which options to select? There are many options. For anyone reading this who has Acrobat Pro and if you don't see the Flatten tool, you should be able to find it under: Tools >> Print Production >> Preflight

Disregard the question below! I asked the question while I was running the MXD to PDF Python script. I asked because I assumed it might take many hours to run the script. The script completed in 39 minutes compared to 14 hours using Export to PDF. I quality of the PDF is great. I'm using the latest version of ArcGIS for Desktop and ArcMap. I have a large format printer and I would like to print my ArcMap .mxd file to the HP Printer. I tried printing directly from ArcMap to the printer via a parallel printer cable connected to the printer but the map is large and nothing happens I think there is not enough memory, maybe not enough printer buffer memory, I'm not sure. I tried exporting from ArcMap to PDF but it takes 14 hours to create the PDF file. I could try printing the map from ArcMap to PDF, but I don't know if printing to PDF is any faster than exporting. Would it be faster to create the PDF file from this Python script? MXD to PDF Or, would it be faster to export the .mxd to tiff and then somehow convert the tiff to pdf?

I have managed to put together a very complex topographic map, learning along the way. I am looking for someone who can evaluate the map and tell me if the map can be improved, or if anything is done incorrectly. It would be great if there was someone in the Minneapolis/Saint Paul, Minnesota area who could check the map in person. Otherwise, the evaluation could be done online by screen sharing with webinar type software. I can pay to compensate for your time.

Thank you Dan and Abdullah, I wish there was a way to mark both answers as correct. Abdulah, I really appreciate the specific instructions to use Define Projection tool not Project tool. Dan, your explanation that "NAD83 is a datum, which just describes the 'shape' of earth" was very helpful to me. I was using the Define Projection tool, but I was typing 4269 into the search box which was giving me a GCS. After reading your advice, I clicked on Projected Coordinate Systems instead and then chose the PCS and UTM Zone appropriate for the location and it worked perfectly.

Thank Dan and Abdullah. I'm still learning about GCS and Projections and I'm not sure how to tell what is what. Below is from the vector shape layer. I see the GCS but, I don't know about the Projection. How do I check? Below is from the Raster DEM layer Below is from the Data Frame.
