Good clarification question Tim. I was thinking specifically in the context of layers created using ArcGIS Desktop and hosted in ArcGIS Server.

Several people have mentioned "event layers" in reference to "feature layers". As I've poked around in the Esri documentation I haven't found a concise explanation for an "event layer". I suspect this may be an older term that isn't currently in use so I put the question out there to all you experienced GIS geeks ... what is an "event layer" and what is the fundamental difference between an "event layer" and a "feature layer". Thank you in advance and both helpful and correct answers will be flagged! -Cam

A testing tip. Have a browser other than the one you normally use installed on your machine. Open that 2nd browser and then open a private browsing/incognito window (ensures it won't use any pre-existing setting or cache) and you should be able to simulate exactly what 'outside' users will see.

Correct. You can get a list of what does (and doesn't) consume credits here: http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis/arcgisonline/credits To your specific example: "What Doesn't Use Service Credits? Leveraging your own ArcGIS for Server capabilities to host and publish map services"

If you download and install a free copy of Fiddler to capture and visualize all the traffic between the browser and the server that should give you additional information on exactly what is going on. http://www.telerik.com/fiddler

Hi Craig, One possible direction to explore is to use the native database technology. What you are describing is usually referred to as a Unique Constraint. Unique Constraints and Check Constraints Most databases support this. A particular table's primary key is always under a unique constraint and many databases allow other columns to be configured with this unique constraint property. A few caveats from having used these in the past. 1. When trying to apply the unique constraint to an existing table column the operation will fail if the data isn't already unique (i.e. if two rows already have duplicate values) 2. This low-level enforcement of uniqueness isn't always gracefully handled by client applications. A users is just as likely to get DB write error as they are to get a meaningful error message. Check the documentation of the database you are using for unique constraint and you should find instructions. Cam

Looks like it is an iOS - Android difference in Collector behavior then. Here is a screen from an iPad and it looks like you see the details initially similar to your iOS phone screen.

One suggestion that might help is to try an Android phone and an iOS tablet so you can determine if the problem is iOS / Android specific (certainly possible) or responsive design form factor (phone size vs. tablet size).

A simple data file that I often use for testing. I don't remember where I first found this. If you are new to ArcGIS Online this file can be dropped directly on the map within that interface.

Here is a UX brainstorm idea. What about a hybrid solution allowing the paper medium and the device medium to work in collaboration? Allow the paper pocket version to shine where it already does ... laying out the options in a given time slot clearly and easily to see. Then for each item have a small QR code (or a ref# if there is no room for that) next to each session. Then you can use the paper and your brain for the spatial analysis it is good for and your device as the 'more info' when you need it.

Lauren, A good place to start is to take your existing Geocortex site and add an HTML5 viewer to it (in addition to the Silverlight viewer application that is already there). With a minimum of effort you should be able to get an initial mobile-friendly HTML5 version of your existing application. Cam

I've been looking into this as well for handheld radios. As I investigate what I'm finding the answer is ... yes, but. Motorola for example has made great strides and now provides a single API interface called MNIS (MOTOTRBO Network Interface Service) that allows for TCP/IP UDP based requests for things like location services of radios with a standard mechanism regardless of the radio deployment topology. Technologically therefore you get a big YES as you can write a single input connector to GEP that can acquire this data in usable form with no special hardware required. The BUT comes from the reality of the design of radio systems. RF resources are precious (think of how we developed software in the early 80s when you had to squeeze out every drop of memory efficiency). In practice this means that many radio networks are designed to a particular capacity expectation. A poorly written program (e.g. requesting things too often, or requesting updates from every radio at once rather than staggering requests) or even a well written program requesting location services data from a radio network that is in use near or at its design capacity can cause problems with voice quality and availability. In summary, technologically it is quite possible but care must be taken to involve those who understand the radio network and its capacity and the added volume of your location requests to ensure the total capacity of the RF-transmitted digital bandwidth is not exceeded. -Cam
