Hi Szymon, You're hitting a bug, that should work. I'll provide a NIM # a little bit later. Alternatively, you can accomplish the same thing with one line by setting a filter list on the parameter within getParameterInfo. Something equivalent to this: param0.filter.list = ["Polygon"] That will trigger some automatic validation without you having to set up something equivalent. -Dave

This is pretty interesting; is there documentation about the differences? Have a look at the SpatialReference page here: http://resourcesbeta.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/index.html#/SpatialReference/018z0000000v000000/ and also here: http://resourcesbeta.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/index.html#//002z0000001m000000.htm Does that provide what you're looking for? -Dave

That was fast, so txt file can be read as a table, thats interesting, something to explore for sure. thanks David. I like the last idea at least for testing purposes at 10.1. So, regarding the structure, do the tools, handle comma delimited, and treat the top row as the column headings? Yes. Just to confirm myself, I created a little text file that contained this: a,b,c,d 1,2,3,S 4,5,6,T I used that as input to TableToTable and it spit out a table of 2 rows with 5 fields (OBJECTID, a, b, c, d) -Dave

This may seem trivial to some, but what is the best way to go for conversion purposes, from a text file into a GIS format. I was looking to use win32com and convert a txt file right into Access, but Esri does not support the .accdb format, so this does not solve my issue, unless win32com allows to go straight into a mdb. I was also thinking of the dbf format (Seems like a dated approach), or does it make sense to just use the insertcursor from a text file right into a file GB. I get a lot of txt files from management, and I am looking to just build a tool for myself or them to get something a bit more useful and streamline my own workflow. i don't really want to go into SQL Server or Postgress for simple operations. Hi Ted Could depend on how your .txt files are structured, but a .txt can be read by most tools that accept a table or table view as input. So you could feed it directly into tools like Make XY Event Layer or XY To Line. Or you could read in the file in Python and write out in your own flavor with a cursor. -Dave

Yes, it has, and prj files are not included as a node, or installed, as I understand it. Yes, 'prj' files are gone at 10.1. From the Python perspective it shouldn't matter much, we will still 'recognize' the files even though they don't technically exist. So if you used a direct path to one of the installed prj files at 10.0 as input to the SpatialReference class--it will still work at 10.1 as it did at 10.0. A few better options at 10.1 though, the sr name or factory code will work as well. -Dave

"Adding" a script is not appropriate because I have yet to create the script. It would be useful to be able to create an empty file with a py suffix right there. When you set a script tool's source--you should be able to specify a .py file that doesn't yet exist. When you then hit the Next button, it will prompt you to create the empty .py file. -Dave

Hi Chris, It's not directly on arcpy at 10.0 (at 10.1 there will be SetLogHistory/GetLogHistory functions), but you can set it through arcpy.gp like below.
import arcpy
arcpy.gp.loghistory = False #turn it off
With regards to setting 'new' properties on arcpy. This is really just how Python works, there isn't a distinction between attributes in a class or setting them later in the code. You'll see this in Python standard libraries too, or even a class you might create yourself. Generally speaking in arcpy, if you don't see a property on arcpy, or any of it's classes and modules, it's not there (Describe being an exception). -Dave

Hi, How do i list the Relationship Classes with python ? For tables, datasets and featuresClass use ListTables, ListDatasets and ListFeatureClasses. Thanks Hi Gonzalo, Yes, it's possible using Describe and it's children property. children will return a list of subelements from a workspace. So, if you use a bit of code like below, this will return a list of relationship class names.
workspace = "c:/data/gdb.gdb"
rc_list = [c.name for c in arcpy.Describe(workspace).children if c.datatype == "RelationshipClass"] -Dave

Hello, I am having problems with Multiple Ring Buffer tool in ArcGIS 10. Not working for me, even for my colleagues. I searched forum, but no help solving my case. After selecting input layer, when you start to define distances following error occures: ERROR updateParameters Execution Error: Runtime error: 'ascii' codec can't decode byte 0xa0 in position 0: ordinal not in range(128) Hi Ludek, I believe this issue you're describing is covered by this bug report: http://resources.arcgis.com/content/nimbus-bug?bugID=TklNMDYyNDk3 -Dave

NIM059845 didn't make it into 10 SP1 and there is no indication as to when it is going to be fixed, nor does the NIM site indicate the temporary workaround. Any further information? Sorry Dan, I was disappointed myself. We have had it fixed in our 10.1 code base, and we will be pushing it through to service pack 2 in the next short while. The projected date for SP2 I believe is still early 2011. The NIM report has also been updated, and should get pushed to the web on the next flush. -Dave

Not sure why ESRI makes all these "sweeping" changes (as in sweeps my existing code into the garbage can)! Hi Chris, The case-sensitivity of arcpy is something of a trade-off. By providing early binding with arcpy (giving you drop-downs, code completion, etc), it locks us into case-sensitivity. The important thing to note is that this change does not affect any Python scripts written using a geoprocessor object. Any scripts written on past releases of ArcGIS, don't need to be updated--they should just work. -Dave
