Yes, it's initailly based on the same feature class, as I describe above and here: In ArcMap: Create a feature class in my geodatabase and it adds the layer in 'Table Of Contents'. Open File-->Share As-->Service... Publish a feature service with the name MyFeatureServiceReadAndWrite. Publish a second feature service with the name MyFeatureServiceReadOnly I must be missing something? I'm using ArcMap 10.3 My ArcGIS server is a 10.2 and with MS SQL server as geodatabase source.

But I must be doing something wrong and I have tested it several times and they are separated, like this: Geodata as shown in my feature service called MyGeodataAsReadAndWrite: Geodata as shown in my feature service called MyGeodataAsReadOnly. Shouldn't a feature added in one map also be shown in the other map if they share the same underlying data source?

Sorry, but it still doesn't open 'Update Definition' and where I want to modify the layer name. I applied your syntax on my URLs, like this: Your suggested syntax: http://server:port/arcgis/admin/services/[<folder>]/<serviceName.serviceType>/edit Applied your syntax on my URL: http://myserver:6080/arcgis/admin/services/ExternalTestBeta_APP9_LKP_AllRequiredLayers/FeatureServer/edit It gives the following information: Could not find resource or operation 'ExternalTestBeta_APP9_LKP_AllRequiredLayers' on the system. I also tried with 'rest', like this: http://myserver:6080/arcgis/rest/admin/services/ExternalTestBeta_APP9_LKP_AllRequiredLayers/FeatureServer/edit This takes my to the ArcGIS REST Admin page, same as I describe above. The link to consumer side works fine: http://myserver:6080/arcgis/rest/services/ExternalTestBeta_APP9_LKP_AllRequiredLayers/FeatureServer So, it didn't solve my problem where I want to modify a layer name on a feature server by using 'Update Definition'. But thanks anyway for trying to help me!

I will explain my problem in a scenario, like this: I open my feature service from the consumer side and it works fine: http://myserver:6080/arcgis/rest/services/ExternalTestBeta_APP9_LKP_AllRequiredLayers/FeatureServer Now I try to add admin between rest and service, like this: http://lkppde1065:6080/arcgis/rest/admin/services/ExternalTestBeta_APP9_LKP_AllRequiredLayers/FeatureServer It opens a page called ArcGIS REST Admin with error code:400 and with text information about 'Clearing Cache' ...but this is not what I want. I need page for the feature service as admin. There is also a link called ArcGIS Server Administrator Directory, so I click on that and it opens a page where I enter the admin credentials. Now I open the page: http://myserver:6080/arcgis/admin/services It shows all services as MapServer and that is what initailly confused me. But I'm fine with that now. ...and here is where I am now, trying to find the option 'Update Definition', so that I can change name on one of my layers. According to above article about the 'Update Definition' option, this is the way to open it: http://<adminservicecatalog-url>/services/<serviceName>/FeatureServer/<layerId>/updateDefinition So, in my example the address should be: http://myserver:6080/arcgis/admin/services/ExternalTestBeta_APP9_LKP_AllRequiredLayers/FeatureServer/0 But this opens a page like this: I also tried with adding 'rest' between admin and services, but it faails too: http://myserver:6080/arcgis/admin/rest/services/ExternalTestBeta_APP9_LKP_AllRequiredLayers/FeatureServer/0 The only way for me to open the service and its layer is as a consumer, like this: http://myserver:6080/arcgis/rest/services/ExternalTestBeta_APP9_LKP_AllRequiredLayers/FeatureServer/0 ...and that doesn't work for me, since I need to open it as a admin in order to get access to the 'Update Definition' option.

Hi Andy, Yes, it's definetly published as a feature service. I only work with feature services since we need to send data from our map application to the geodatabase. Yes, the geodatabase is on a SQL server on a machine within our local network. But, still I can't figure out how to find the 'Update Defintion' option, so that I can change name on one of my layers.

I found the answer why I only see MapServer: When you look at your GIS server as an administrator, you'll only see one service, a map service with the Feature Access capability enabled. However when you look at the GIS server as a consumer of the service, for example when you are developing a web app with the service, you will see two ways that you can access the service. So, I know I'm in the right place and I should now see the 'Update Defintion', option according to above documentation, but it's not there for me. I need to find 'Update Definition' it in order to modify the name on one of the layers. This is what I have at the bottom of the page:

Thanks Jake, I will use your information once I have figured out how to create two feature services that goes to the same data source. This is what I tested and I know that it's probably fundamentally wrong, but I'm a GIS n00b: In ArcMap: Create a feature class in my geodatabase and it adds the layer in 'Table Of Contents'. Open File-->Share As-->Service... Publish a feature service with the name MyFeatureServiceReadAndWrite. Publish a second feature service with the name MyFeatureServiceReadOnly In Google Chrome: Open the above .../arcgis/rest/service/MyFeatureServiceReadAndWrite Open the above .../arcgis/rest/service/MyFeatureServiceReadOnly Open ArcGIS.com Map and add features in both services and confirm that the above services are separated and are now showing the same geodata. Any ideas how I can create two feature services that points to the same geodata?

I'm logged on as admin on our local ArcGIS server, here: http:<servername>:<port>/arcgis/admin/services But I only see service on MapServer and no FeatureServer. I want to publish and share two feature services to show the same geodata. First feature service with all capabilities (update, delete etc.) enabled and share it to a group of users. Second feature service where some capabilities (update, delete etc.) are disabled and share it to another group of users. I want to use feature service for both and not map service. I would like to publish them on our internal ArcGIS Server. Any ideas where I can find a guidline or if anyone can explain the main steps. //Johan

Thanks Jake! However, those filters will not be saved on the feature service. In my exmaple above, Alex, Tim and Peter will still be able to see each other's business leads. I guess I can add filter and maybe save it to three differnt web map's on ArcGIS online and share them individually to above users. But in our case, we already have a web application embeddd into our business system. Anyway, I found one workaround and where I add a filter on the layers before publishing them. So, now I have three layers for the same data source but with three different filters. I can then, individually assign each layer to above three users in our web map application configuration. So, my problem is solved. Another way would have been to implement the possibility add a condition against the feature service …on layers in a similar way as it is done on ArcGIS Online… in our business system’s layer configuration. But we don’t have that today and that’s why I wanted to know if a condition could be added also on the service itself.

I would like to publish a layer to a feature service but with a filter on attribute values, so that only some parts of the geodata is shown. For example, consider a layer called Business Leads with an attribute called Name, with values like: Alex, Tim and Peter. In this case I want to publish a feature service with layer Business Leads and add a filter for Alex, so that only his business leads are shown in the map. Any ideas?

I have created a feature service and it shared: http://services.arcgis.com/u1pyDfVudZJk1pG6/arcgis/rest/services/Labels/FeatureServer I have three layers and all three are defined to show labels. Labels are nicely shown in ArcMap but not on ArcGIS.com Map. Note! Attached is a picture of my layers and features in ArcMap. UPDATED: I've done some more tests and this is my result: Feature service on ArcGIS online and labels are not shown on the map. Feature service on an internal ArcGIS server and labels are not shown on the map. Map service on ArcGIS online and labels are shown on the map. Map service on an internal ArcGIS server and labels are shown on the map. This is how I create my labels: Create feature classes in ArcMap and add them as layers. In ArcMap, open layer property and configure labels. Create service definition file(s). Publish service definition files on ArcGIS online and on internal ArcGIS server and the result is as described above. Can you think of any workaround where labels are shown on a feature service?

Many thanks for your help Jay! I have two fields now EndDate and CalculatedEndDate. The field CalcaulatedEndDate is added with your code, as shown above. When entering and saving a value like 2015-02-10 in EndDate it shows <null> in CalculatedEndDate. Is that the correct result? Also, do you have any tips on where I add a calculation to show a symbol in red color on overdue, by using my new field CalculatedEndDate?
