Thanks Ted. That really demonstrates why the beauty and simplicity and interoperability of the Personal Geodatabase for small-scale data management and transfer should not just be tossed out with the trash by ESRI.

If you just want something that users can read and you can use at your license level, then you might consider the ESRI Workgroup geodatabase. It requires a lot more effort, administrative overhead and technical knowledge than the Access-based Personal Geodatabase, which requires no overhead, at all. However, your users could connect using office products and ODBC and it's a no-extra-cost entry level of SDE geodatabase. There was a feature class table already joined to one of the feature classes that was part of this spatial join. I unjoined that feature class and then this ran without an error.

Since we are concerned with rate of change and popularity over time for ideas posted in ArcGIS Ideas here, I have created a new Idea to provide users with performance graphs to show the performance of an idea over time. Please give it a vote up if you like it. Add Performance Graphs to ArcGIS Ideas Sound like a good idea?

Thanks for this important use-case, Deborah. I, too, have been a user of the PGDB at my old employer, and my new employer also uses PGDB alongside SDE for many things. Stopping cold-turkey would be a major issue. ESRI has been trying to kill the PGDB for several years now for the reasons they outline in the link I provided in my original idea above. However, you can still connect to a PGDB in Pro, if you're willing to shell out $2500 for the Data Interoperability Extension. So, ESRI HAS developed the ability to connect Pro to a PGDB and you can get it. They're just not going to give it to you for free because they're trying to get you to stop using it. Long story short, if we put enough pressure on them here, they might just put it into the main Pro product.

Yes, having an options toggle is a good way to handle this. Here's a related, specific request to allow the user to save a project without creating a FGDB. Enable ArcGIS Pro to Save Without Creating a File Geodatabase These two ideas are related, but different, and so should not be combined into one. The one on this page proposes an option box. The one I link to above is specifically for saving without creating a FGDB.

Great use case Ted. I like your evidence showing cases PGDB performance exceeds FGDB in the final analysis!

Yes. The dynamic refreshing of the database connections in ArcCatalog is very useful and responsive. The new method in Pro is unresponsive and the workarounds are needlessly convoluted. This is another case where Pro is a step backward in terms of ease of use, flexibility and usefulness. Please, let's get ArcGIS Pro up to speed with ArcMap #arcmap equivalent #arcmap equivalency
