Rory, Take a look at the desktop help file! It has hundreds of examples of how to script the geoprocessing tools in Python. Depending upon exactly what you want to do you may want to merge tables or append data to an existing table? Anyway search the help file for the Merge tool and at the bottom of the page there is always a short example of the tool being called using Python under the section Scripting syntax. Duncan ... Greg, To add or find a table in the map document you need to be using the  IStandaloneTableCollection Interface. You can loop with this to compare names of tables in the collection. There is no "find the table with this name" function you must enumerate the collection. Duncan ... View more

I was going to post a separate idea but mine fits nicely into this one. I wanted to suggest to ESRI that when someone posts a thread on the forum that there is a mandatory drop down that says what version of ArcGIS they are asking a question about. This is important for people who are trying to reply to the user. Recently someone posted a request for help as their VBScript was not working for them, I tried it and it worked fine for me. Someone suggested an alternative but in Python. Turns out they were using version 10 (I'm still on version 9.3). Konrad, There are several ways to create new rows in a layer. The easiest (but slowest if you are doing 100's of rows) is the IFeature.Store method. You get a handle on the Featureclass (your shapefile) then create a new Feature which you populate then store.  The key words you need to be searching for in the VBA developer help are IFeature, IFeatureClass and CreateFeature. Chris, OK I guess you need to check that your table is actually being created correctly? Try adding the table to the mxd but don't add anything to it. This will hopefully confirm that your code is creating a valid table ready to be populated with rows. I would even try to add a row manually just to make sure it's not being file locked or something. All, I poked around the Help file a bit more and although it seems there is no attribute in the APL file that you can set to say a control is invisible you can do it through code.
