I'm worried that one of our SDE Geodatabases may now be corrupted! The steward of that database was deleting a feature dataset when ArcCatalog hung. After waiting 15 minutes he stopped and restarted ArcCatalog. When he reconnected all that he was trying to delete was gone except for one feature class, but what is really weird is that the feature class was one of several under the feature dataset. The feature dataset is now gone but the lone feature class is now showing up in the root and there appears to be no way to delete this feature class. ArcCatalog just hangs when trying to delete this feature class. Any ideas? ArcSDE direct connections, SDE 10.0 SQL 2012

Up to now we have been moving feature classes to a single Enterprise Geodatabase (SDE/SQL 2012) when publishing Map Services. Are there any advantages or disadvantages in using file geodatabases? Thanks

That is correct. Domains in SDE (Enterprise Database) are owned by the user who created them. A domain can be created explicated or gets created when the feature class with domains is copied into the SDE geodatabase. So, I have domains owned by kreuzrsk and some owned by and others owned by DBO. Since, I'm not DBO I can't delete those or any others ones I don't own.

This is great. But I have a problem deleting Domains in SDE where I'm not the owner. The owner is long gone and I can't delete domains even tough I'm sa on the SQL instance! Anyone run into this on SDE?

We are running ArcSDE 10.1 in a SQL 2012 environment. I manage the database but I do not own all of the domains. A couple versions ago the Domains were stored in their own SQL GDB table so it was very easy to change a domains owner through a SQL update script, but now that domains are store in XML (stored in the database) I don't know how to change ownership. How can you delete in a domain in SQL/SDE that is owned by someone else?

I don't think the replace datasource works when going from a GDB to SDE. You can do replacements from PGDB to FGDB, FGDB to FGDB, FGDB to PGDB and PGDB to PGDB when the feature class has the same name for example "county." But at least in SQL Server the name in SDE is seen as "databasename.schema.county." In our case GeoLib.DBO.County so the repair broken links in MXDs doesn't work.

In SQL Server if one of the database owners deletes a Geodatabase registered table or view with the SQL tools the same things happens but the fix is much cleaner. Simply create a dummy table of the same name using the SQL tools (Management Studio) and then go in and delete the table/view using ArcCatalog.

We have a complex database structure in SQL 2012 / SDE 10.1. The custom client piece that is installed in ArcGIS Desktop just got upgraded from Desktop 10.1 to 10.2.2. Things have been working fine and our users have been entering data but yesterday morning the app started hanging. Not only that but ArcCatalog will hang just trying to view the table. Like all the tables in the databases it's registered with the Geodatabase and versioned. The table does take part in several relationship classes. Any ideas what could happen to the data that would make ArcCatalog hang? Thanks,

On Friday I executed a long running python program in the Pythonwin environment. When I got into work today I saw that I still had an ArcGIS license in use from Friday. Only after closing the Pythonwin program was the license released. Can I add something at the bottom of the script to explicitly release the license? Thanks

Collin, What you are seeing I think is normal. Below is a screen shot showing the same feature class as seen from Management Studio on the left and ArcCatalog on the right. I think STArea and STLenght are virtual fields as presented by ArcGIS. So I think that's a red herring. Have you looked at the Shape.STLength values in ArcMap to see if they are really inside the 1/2 mile filter?

How did you do the upgrade? Is it possible that your feature classes are now using SDEBinary instead of the SQL Spatial datatype. In ArcCatalog what does it say under Properties | General Tab | Storage?

Melissa, I'm disappointed that functionality would go away, even though it there is a technical reason, and we have to put in enhancement requests to get it back! At last years User Conf they kept saying at the Enterprise Database island that all functionality of the SDE Command Line tools would make it into the final release of 10.3. Then it doesn't happen. It's an all too common experience with ESRI software. And I say that as a fan of ESRI for 25 years.

Anyone going to this year's ESRI User Conference should make their feelings known! We have two concurrent pools of licenses, one pool of ArcView and another pool for ArcInfo. Over 400 users share a total 60 concurrent licenses but there is nothing analogous to this in the Arc Pro named user licensing model. Because we have an ELA we had to pay for the 50 "named users" we have and didn't receive any for our concurrent licenses!
