I'm finally dragging myself kicking and screaming into Python after using VB for a number of years to calculate field values. It's really frustrating to have a script run fine on one or two selected records, only to have it immediately bomb out on the entire table of records: especially when the only problem is the calculator has reverted back to VB automagically. Is there a way to keep Python as the scripting language default or, how do I keep it from reverting back to VB? (Using version 10.0 desktop)

Exactly what is implied: In order to be considered a MATCH, the candidate will need score of 'X' In order to be considered a CANDIDATE, the address will need a score of 'Y' If you set your MATCH score high, and your CANDIDATE score low, you probably won't get many matches but you'll probably get a ton of candidates to consider.

Glad you got it to work for you: I think Excel is a great spreadsheet app. I use it for all my billing and tax records. However, if get 'data' sent to me in the form of an Excel spreadsheet, the first thing I do with it is import it as a table to a geodatabase.

I'm neither an expert in vb.net or python, but back in the olden days, when I had more hair and none of it was gray, the operating system of choice was unix. We would write a variable name to a text file, and then open that file to read the contents. We moved variables back and forth from AML to C or Bourne shell scripts that way.

Personally, I think excel is a wonderful spreadsheet application, but it's just that; a spreadsheet. My suggestion is to import it into the flavor of geodatabase you prefer and follow this link.

You should verify what I'm about to say with your ESRI customer rep: 1) You need to go to your customer portal and deactivate the current 10.2 license, making it available once again. 2) How did you install 10.2 on the machine you are about to replace? Use the same method, then register it with the license you made available in step 1. Again, you need to verify this with ESRI; you should call them before deactivating anything.

But this solution is not flexible to update, since each time the data changes (new address is created)... I don't see how you can add an address if the range of the street has already been established. For example, the 100 Block of Main St has a range of 100-198 and 101-199. You have all the possible addresses from your macro. What can be added? I think that the complete set of addresses should be stored somewhere within the address locator, or there should be a generic tool that does this, what do you think? Using street data to match against is what it is. You are matching against a range of numbers so the location is interpolated. Using the Main St example above, the address of 150 Main St will locate on the even side of Main St, right in the middle of the block. The reality might be that: A. There is no physical address 150 Main St B. 150 Main St is NOT actually on the even side and/or in the middle of the block I have used streets to address match for the past 10 years for 9-1-1 response. As I type this, I have an address point feature class that is based on actual, physical addresses from parcel data that I'm working on to use in addition to the streets. The street data has served us well, and I'll continue to use it for intersections; nobody lives in an intersection , but in the 9-1-1 world an awful lot of activity occurs in them. Best of luck to you!

I'm not aware of any tool that does that for you, so you'd probably need to create your own. However, I need to ask; what is the purpose of such an output?

Glad you got it figured out; good catch Bruce! Something I always like to mention when working with street data is the fact that some streets don't actually intersect: think about freeway overpasses. Within the context of this particular discussion it's not a big deal. But next week when the boss says "Kevin, since you did such a great job geocoding, I'd like you to do some vehicle routing with network analyst..." is when building the killer street feature class comes into play.

I just built one with all the address ranges set to 0 (zero). I can find intersections not problem using a table for the source as well as interactively.

Okay, I see your point (all puns intended). Certainly didn't mean to burr you up; perhaps using a tablet sized map or similar sized paper map to locate points to the precision needed isn't the way to go. If you need to locate to a foot, a survey grade GPS is what I would deploy.

What do you mean they are in the wrong place? Am I correct in thinking you are adding the nad27 data to a nad83 data frame? If so, your complaint is that the projection on the fly feature of ArcMap isn't meeting your expectations: is that correct as well? Personally, I'd chalk it up to the difference in datums and not worry about it; 125 feet? What is the precision of the original data? What are your precision needs for this data? Seems to me you've resolved the issue by projecting it.

I was just reading this thread and searching the online help docs when Bruce posted his response. Seems to me that the Street Name locator style is pretty limited in its use. The Dual Range style of locator does in fact support intersections; you might give this a try: Add four 'phony' address range fields of numeric type to your reference data LeftFrom LeftTo RightFrom RightTo Calculate all the values to 0 (zero) Create a US Streets Dual Range locator referencing the data you just modified Specify the intersection connectors of your choice Build it and try it....
