I cannot vouch for this answer, but here's a link to one explanation: http://walt.therices.org/index.php/2009/09/georeferencing-dpi-quirks/ You might check out ESRI's knowledge based article 32868 if you haven't already done that. Second and higher order transformations typically can't be expressed in world files. One other thought. Update georeferencing stores all the transformation information in external files while rectification permanently transforms the raster, hence it's external files won't carry the same transformation information.

In the meantime could you use the trace tool along the edges of these other polygons when creating a new polygon, thereby eliminating slivering or gaps? Alternately, although a bit clicky, could you temporarily copy these other polygons into your editing layer, use autocomplete, and then delete the unwanted polygons?

A lot hinges on whether you have rasterization going on, complex labeling, highly compressed imagery, etc. in your layers all of which can greatly increase processing time. More hinges on the dpi and the Output image quality. If you are using the Highest try it at normal and 300 dpi. The computer specs are of course a factor. You might Google on ArcGIS pdf performance or something like that for more ideas. I've got some town by town forest stand types over photos at 36x48 that easily take that long to export to pdf. In contrast the base covertype maps are setup so there is no rasterization of any sort and the labels are all annotext and they zip right out. I've got it set so most of my DDP exports are on my old secondary computer running Arcview 10.1 beta and while the project is exporting I'm doing work on my main computer, but in the past I set things to run overnight on the photo type maps.

You have a corrupted shapefile and while there are some things you can do to save at least parts of it, you likely will lose some data even if they work. See http://support.esri.com/en/knowledgebase/techarticles/detail/27429 for some repair options. Make a backup of your shapefile first before doing these. There's this too: http://arcscripts.esri.com/details.asp?dbid=13733

After you joined the shapefiles you could export that to a new shapefile and it will contain all the fields. Then you can delete the fields you don't want. Or prior to joining in ArcMap you could hide the fields you don't want.

You might try using a Page Definition query on your layer in its Properties after setting up the DDP. You can also clip using the Data Frame Properties - Data Frame - Clip Options

Thales007: In regards to compression quality, what is the setting on the ArcGIS 1:100 scale that produces a 20:1 or 10:1 compression for jp2, or jpeg? I assumed it was 100 divided by the compression desired (e.g. 100/20 or 5 gives a 20:1 compression) but the jp2 file sizes ArcGIS produces do not match with those of GeoExpress which states compression in terms of 10:1, 20:1 etc. I assume they use different algorithms and there is some variation in jp2s, but at least in my latest work the GeoExpress setting produced the expected compression and ArcGIS's was noticeably less. This was using ArcGIS 10 beta 2 in a direct conversion rather than a rectification. Marcinjz: It does seem that this newer version of ArcGIS produces jp2 much faster than 9.3 (it is able to use multiple cores during this conversion) and the resulting jp2s work better in ArcMap, but I haven't tried to objectively prove it. I don't know what version of ArcGIS you are using but my 9.3 just didn't seem to do well with that file type.

If you just need the lines can you copy and paste selected polygons into a polyline layer? I think the Polygon to line tool in ETGeowizards is free but check on it.

I'm not exactly sure of the problem so I'll suggest a couple of things. First, if you are using an HP wide format printer (and maybe there is something similar on others) you might want to set the margins to "Small" in the Printer Properties - Paper/Quality - Paper Options - Margins or something similar depending on your driver. This maximizes the print margins. Second, I always set my layout size and location manually in the Data Frame Properties - Size and Position tab keying off the left bottom anchor point. So maybe your settings for either or both of these differ from your co-workers? I you have a different default printer that can impact your default settings too.

Which version of ArcGIS are you using? In 9x you need to select the polygon in order to cut it with the sketch tool. In addition you have to make sure it is the only selected polygon. If you install the Cut Polygons Without Selecting developer sample then these aren't a problem. In 10x if you have opted not to use feature templates, then the foregoing applies but you can't install that Developer Sample unfortunately. If you use feature templates you need to select the cut polygons tool.

I just tested my 10.1 beta 2 to see how well it added an attribute field value and it's very nice. The only odd thing was the formatting defaulted to font size 5. Maybe that was just that instance but even if that was the default instead of formatting a text field ahead of time one would either do it afterwards, or copy and paste the expression into a pre-formatted text field.
