Jamal, Please download and try this version. Make sure to uninstall the older version first. http://downloads.esri.com/blogs/waterutilities/BetaVersions/release11-1-2011.zip Thank you Michael. Sounds that the tool "The Valve Isolation Trace" is working now! BUT my question is still not answered: "Finding the closed valve to close"! In the attached screenshot, i wanted to find the nearest valve to close in case of rupture at the indicated point, how can i use this tool to achieve this purpose? All what i get is a long message saying that "No water network structures......" Please, how to achieve this purpose? I'm using the data from the "Infrastructure Editing Template for ArcGIS 10" http://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=14bdfb26bc2f4e0388a633fbd0ccca02 Appreciated, regards Jamal

Jamal, The toolbar in the video is an order version and it has changed since the filming. The tool allows you to click a location on the main and preform the trace. So select the Tool and just click on the main. If you want to return all the features as a selection set, hold the control key down when you click on the main. Where you able to get the tools to work on the sample data? Did you get an error about a source not being defined? If so, you need to connect a water source to the network(wNetworkStructure). Find one of these features and connect it to a water main with a new water main. There was a problem with the sample data that is going to be fixed in the release this week. You need to update the configuration file to allow the tool to work on your own data. If you download the most recent version from the Beta thread, there is a tool to open the configuration file you. You will need to update the Trace Isolation tags, these tags let you define the Sources of water and the Valves, as well as their fields and values that define if they are operable or non operable. I would review the overview pdfs that are also available on the beta thread. Many thank Michael. - At all! the "The Valve Isolation Trace" is not working. for example, i wanted to find the nearest valve to close for the location indicated in the the attached screenshots, i clicked the "The Valve Isolation Trace" then went to select the Main but nothing happen! furthermore, the icon of the "The Valve Isolation Trace" becomes inactive)!! What might be the problem?? how to use this tool? - Where is the link to "download the most recent version of the configuration file" so that i can "define the Sources of water and the Valves, as well as their fields and values that define if they are operable or non operable"? appreciated, regards Jamal

Jamal, The tool is included in the Infrastructure Editing Template. The template include an add in that contains this functionality as well as a secondary trace, a sewer profile graph trace and much much more. You can find the released version here http://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=14bdfb26bc2f4e0388a633fbd0ccca02 And the most recent beta version here http://forums.arcgis.com/threads/20000-Beta-Versions?p=116013&viewfull=1#post116013 Hi Michael, sorry for the frequent posts. I couldn't even know how to select the point at which I've a rupture to find the nearest valve to close. Watching the video suggests that we have two icons under the "Valve Isolation Trace". In the installed toolbar, these icons are not existing. Screenshots are taken for the installed toolbar and the toolbars from the video". Why the two icons under the "Valve Isolation Trace" are missing in my toolbar and existing in the toolbar shown in the video?! It would be highly appreciated how can i use the "Infrastructure editing toolbar" and the "Infrastructure reporting toolbar" in order to close the nearest valve of a rupture point. By the way, can we use these two toolbars if we have our own data which is built using the geometric network (screenshot is provided)? Thank you, regards Jamal

How can i "Click a location to start the trace"? please, see the attached screenshot that shows my question how can i use the tools available in the "Infrastructure editing toolbar" and "Infrastructure reporting toolbar"? Do these toolbars can entirely replace the "Utility Network Analyst" toolbar? Is there a more detailed manual that explains thoroughly how to use these two bars? thank you regards Jamal

Utility Network Analyst: Custom valve isolation please, see the attache image that shows my question i wanted to know whether the ArcGIS 10 includes the very urgent command "Custom valve isolation" as built in tool. This command SELECT the nearest valve that to be closed in case any ruptures occurs at any point in the pipe net work, and thus this valve must be closed to prevent the follow of water at that point! do we still to add this command in the VBA? thank you in advance, regards Jamal

All of the commands have always been in ArcToolbox. The toolbar was what was limited in functionality. It only contained a subset of tools that 3D Analyst offered. This is one of the very reasons the toolbars from Spatial Analyst and 3D Analyst had their tools removed. Different names, different parameters, different UI's, different environments/options, all led to confusion for many users. The full power of these extensions (analytically anyway) has always been and remains in ArcToolbox. Regards, Eric Thank you Eric for the reply. i think, this kind of confusion is still there! i to collect some examples that shows these two issues: - commands that are not in the ArcToolbox; - commands that have different names. regards Jamal

They have augmented the 'Create Tin' tool to do all of the processing like the old toolbar button did. The old 'Create TIN' did not include data, but the new one does. I agree the help needs to be updated for version 10 and I have indicated as much on the feedback for the page. If you see something like that I encourage using that feedback button. It is a little button with a pencil on it. As far as the TIN Chris mentioned, it appears that you are using your boundary as a Hard Clip rather than Soft clip. I would create the TIN again and this time, specify a soft clip and remove the height for that feature. Thank you Jeff for the answer. I'm wondering why ESRI couldn't includes all the commands in the ArcToolbox. It's quite crucial for the user to access all the commands from one place! second, some times, the same command has two different names! one name in the Arctoolbox and other name in the toolbar minue! regards Jamal

The arcpy.mapping script environment can accomplish many of these tasks. Take some time to review the help and Resource Center. Here is a good starting point: http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/index.html#/Introduction_to_arcpy_mapping/00s300000032000000/ Jeff Thank you Jeffrey for the answer. Unfortunately, there is no any integrated example in the help that shows input and the result. No screen shots that show what we have and where we are going...! I'm not sure if there is some ready code that make it a bit easier to print multiple layouts...! do i need to be expert to do this very simple basic issue? and how come it is available for the end user by MapLogic (attached)? How can i obtain an integrated code that has the features of MapLogic? regards Jamal

Thanks for your feedback. In the next release of ArcGIS, we are looking at making the Feature Construction toolbar more effective and easier to use. ArcGIS 10.1 is currently in beta, so I would encourage you to apply to join the beta program and let us know what you think: https://betacommunity.esri.com Hi Rhonda, when ESRI is releasing ArcGIS 10.1? How about the very basic features like the ones developed in ET geowizards, ET geotools, Xtools, Maplogic? why not to include all the very simple basic features? we are struggling each single day of the size of the work around!!!!! we need an integrated package of ArcGIS! in each new version, we just find very few new features! although the pages of "ideas" is still full of suggestions! regards Jamal

In addition to Cory's suggestion on using the TAB key, pressing SHIFT+TAB hides the toolbar temporarily. You can also turn off the display of mini toolbars on the General tab of the Editing Options dialog box. The Feature Construction toolbar That's great! i like this answer! regards Jamal

This has got to be one of the lamest limitations of ArcMap... a program used for cartography can't be used for cartography... absolute insanity. None of the methods described deal with transparencies in conjunction with such layers as hillshade.. Very frustrating. I'm encountered in the same issue! I'm wondering why ArcGIS is very weak in some very basic issues!!!!!! the contour labeling is very well, nevertheless, still it needs some work around in ArcMAP!!!!! what is the shortest way to achieve perfect contour labeling (attached)? thank you in advance, regards Jamal

Hi Adam, There are no specific tutorial data for data driven pages. The easiest way to get started with data driven pages is to: 1. Add a polygon data (ex: US states or world countries) to ArcMap 2. Open the Setup Data Driven Pages dialog (to open this simply click the last button on the right of the Layout toolbar) & click the left most button on the toolbar 3. In the setup dialog choose your polygon layer as the index layer and click OK. 4. You should now have data driven pages. You can use the buttons on the tool bar to go from page to page. Hi tombole, When ESRI is intending to develop some features similar to those existing in Maplogic? http://www.maplogic.com/products/MapLogicLayoutManager.html how to print many maps with same layout but with different layers turned on/off (attached)? regards Jamal

Our goal in 9.4 was two-fold:
1) deliver a set of tools for building complete map books 2) provide an automated way to update layouts, data frames, and map documents
Many people express a need for mulitple layouts because they want to achieve one of those two things. There are also other reasons people want multiple layouts. The 9.4 beta period will be very important for us, as we need to understand which problems 9.4 has actually solved, and which workflows still need solutions. I think our future plans regarding multiple layouts will should be made with unfulfilled user requirements in mind. For now, our solution is what you see in 9.4, focused on satisifying the above two requirements. In the future, we can consider full multiple layouts but should do so with a set real world goals. It would be great for us if you could provide additional details about multiple layout workflows. I think that some needs could be covered with the new 9.4 python scripting experience. Other requirements should go on ESRI's list for a future release. Thanks, Michael I'm really disparate that ArcGIS is not effectively responding to the very basic needs of the users! The ArcGIS users need to install so many other tools (such as: XTools Pro 7.0 En, ETGeoWizards, ETGeoTools, MapLogic Layout Manager, etc.) to do some very BASIC issues I'm wondering why the developers at ESRI don't take these very BASIC needs into consideration!!!! As for the multiple layouts, i got MapLogic Layout Manager but still couldn't print multiple layouts at a time! How can ArcGIS stop this tragedy? Thank you, regards, Jamal

Just FYI, you can add arrows to lines using ArcMap symbology if you dig deep enough into the properties (use a marker line symbol on top of a simple line symbol). Thank you darren. it did work. Uchit: does that satisfy what you are looking for? regards Jamal
