A bicycle is still going to be faster going six blocks in Manhattan at noon than an airplane. The task is identifying the proper vehicle for the purpose, which is why the question has validity issues. - V Thanks Vince, The reason behind this thread is that I got that generally the Silverlight and Flex are much faster than the ADF and wanted to know if that is true. I think I got the answer! That??s not necessarily true! Best Jamal

Performance wise: cashing mxd where the source of data is file/ArcSDE geodatabase I???m wondering if publishing mxd file that contains features classes sourced from file geodatabase is better (in terms of performance and speed of the web mapping application that read its ULRs form it) cashing them from ArcSDE geodatabase. Jamal Spatial Analyst and Geostatistical Analyst use the same equation for IDW, please see page 114 in http://dusk.geo.orst.edu/gis/geostat_analyst.pdf If you have anymore questions regarding this equation then please email me at Steve Many thanks Steve for the help, The equations included in page 114 in the document sound to be consistent with the equation provided in post#13 on this thread. Am I correct? It would be great if you provide me with a mathematical combination for the Z(S0) and ?i. do you agree with the one provided by Mr. Dirk in post #14? No, there will NOT be a definite answer to this question (which is flawed by failure to name products correctly). In my experience, most RDBMS packages perform pretty much equally on the same physical hardware, with experience and skill in tuning and administration providing as much as a 20% swing in response characteristics. If you research the literature, you'll find that unidimensional evaluation for any software product, much less something as complex as database software, is least likely to produce satisfactory results. - V Many thanks Vince. This is what I wanted to know. It was great also when I knew that the file geodatabase is much faster than the ArcSDE goedatabase Best Jamal

There is no concrete answer. This is like asking if Chrome or Firefox is faster. It all depends on multiple factors. You are right. Then Silverlight and Flex as platform for web mapping applications are not necessarily faster than the web ADF. This is what I wanted to know. Sure I??m aware that multiple factors are contributing the performance such as: 1. Hardware specs of the host/client machines (CPU and RAM) 2. Cables connecting host and client machines (vpn, lease dlines, etc.) 3. ArcGIS Server tuning (min/max instances, high/low isolation, cashing, etc.) 4. Database (personal geodatabase/file geodatabase/ ArcSDE geodatabase with SQL or Oracle, etc.) 5. Web mapping application (ADF, Silverlight, Flex) And thus the web mapping application is a partner in the performance game! Best Jamal

Is the Oracle database is faster than SQL database? I have a performance issue in my web mapping application and wanted to investigate multiple factors that might affect the speed: ? Hardware specs of the host and client machines (CPU and RAM) ? Cables connecting host and client machines (vpn, leased lines, etc.) ? ArcGIS server Tuning (min/max instances, high/low isolation, cashing, etc) ? Database (personal geodatabase/file geodatabase/ ArcSDE geodatabase with SQL or Oracle, etc.) ? Web mapping application (ADF, Silverlight, Flex) In this thread just I wanted to know if there might a definite answer whether the Oracle database is much faster than the SQL. For the time being, I??m using SQL server database and I??m struggling with the performance issue as the source data for the URLs used in the web mapping applications is the SQL server database Thank you Best Jamal

Hi Jamal, Think of each instance as a unit of work that can process a request to the service. For example: zooming-in, querying, etc. - each action is a request on the service. So when you have 2 users from 2 different web apps, each making a request to the T5 service, then yes, it is busy and the 3rd user will wait until the 2 requests are completed and an instance becomes available. If you have high isolation set for the service then yes, each instance equals an ArcSOC process. If you have low isolation set for the service then no; an ArcSOC process can contain multiple instances. And this is a general rule, I believe there can be some exceptions. I am not sure what you're asking here ... At Server 10.1 we introduced a new architecture, where you define your instances per machine. Each machine in a multi-machine ArcGIS Server site deployment is a GIS server. When you add a new GIS server to an ArcGIS Server site, you duplicate the available resources for the site (assuming the machines are in the same cluster). And yes, this is for the GIS server machine, not the client machine. From the help topic I referenced in my previous post: The advantage of low isolation is that it increases the number of concurrent instances supported by a single process. Using low isolation can significantly improve memory consumption on your server. However, this improvement comes with some risk. If a process experiences a shutdown or crash, all instances sharing the process are destroyed. Hope this helps, Many thanks Derek for the very informative and detailed answer. This is very helpful. I??m not sure if I??m correct when I say that: ? The min/max number of instances (ArcSOC.exe) indicates the number of concurrent requests (such as zoom, pan, query, etc.) that can be SERVED simultaneously (without failure) when requested via functions available on a web mapping application. ? The high/low resolution is a CPU/RAM issue. High isolation means that the same ArcSOC.exe will be serving only one request while low isolation means that each ArcSOC.exe will be serving multiple requests. Therefore, in the high isolation, the RAM will be consumed (due having multiple ArcSOC.exe) while in the low isolation the CPU will be consumed as multiple request will be served by single ArcSOC.exe. Also, I couldn??t figure out what happens in case the 1. The time the client can use the service (instance) is passed 2. The time the client will wait to get a service is passed 3. The time an idle instance is kept running is passed By the way, do the terms ??service?, ??instance? and ??process? are used interchangeably? Best Jamal

The percentages are somewhat meaningless. A completed cache service could be even at 8% like some I have seen. Especially if you send a GP request at a later time, or cache is moved to an existing service.. it will never reach 100%. go into the cached folders in arcgisserver and look in the GDB, all status spatial and tabular information about the cache is there (very detailed)... You can also check cache status with ArcCatalog against the cached service (which is a finer grain) than checking through ArcServer/Manager. There are several means of adjusting the Time/size of caches. 1. compressed MIXED format, down to 50%.. (these are .bundle files) 2. larger tile sizes 3. More instances / processors 4. Use a cluster purely dedicated for caching. 5. cache based on feature polygon, rather than map extents or full extents 6. cache on demand for certain instances just a few I could think of off the top of my head We have done scales down to 1:286 in some maps, or massive area maps down to L18 Thank you Michael for the answer, The issue that the cashing rarely succeeds! In the screenshot below I got the same problem. Only three of the scales 100% completed. What might be the issue? Why the ??generation is not in progress?? Best Jamal

Hi Jamal, It depends on what functionality you want to enable in your web services. You'll need to have your data in an ArcSDE geodatabase to enable web editing. At 10.2, you can have the data stored in a spatially enabled database that is not a geodatabase. Actually I believe I replied to this question already, please see my 2nd post earlier in this thread. Hope this helps, Thank you Derek for the prompt help and support, My scenario: 1. In my work environment, up to 6 users (with 6 versions) are editing the database which is based on SQL server database 2. The published mxd reads its data from this SQL server database 3. And thus the URLs used in the web mapping applications are referenced to the SQL server database In this scenario, all edits are reflected on the web mapping application as these edits are reconciled. I don??t need to enable editing from the web application. In this case, is it much more powerful to go to the the file geodatabase option such that it is synchronized with the SQL server database on a regular basis? I went back to the documents that you have already advised but couldn??t find a definite answer for my query whether the Silverlight and Flex are much faster than Web ADF? Best Jamal

Hey Jamal, We thought about going back to a file geodatabase but decided against it. Some of our users wanted to be able to do tasks in our web app which would require a feature layer. Because feature layers are only supported through SQL, we would have had a portion of our data in a SQL GDB and a portion in a file GDB and that would have been too much to maintain. So far we are happy with the speed we achieved just by changing the spatial data type from Geometry to SDEBinary. We have an end of the day cleanup where all users reconcile/post and remove their versions. The data is then QC'd, reconcile/post to Default, Synchronized and the geodatabase is compressed. We Analyze about once a week. Having a good cleanup routine definitely helps with the speed of the geodatabase. Good Luck! Luci Hi Luci, Thank you for the answer, ? I couldn??t figure out how the spatial data type could be switched from Geometry to SDEBinaryfor multiple feature classes. , ? Does this mean that keeping the versions will slow down access the database with URLs (from web applications)? ? While the ??Rebuild Indexes, Analyze Datasets and Compressing? does speed up accessing the database, why not to do it daily?
