Hi Perry, This is a setting that is controlled on each slide. Can you confirm that "Open legend when slide loads" is toggled on and that the changes have been published? If your app has unpublished changes, it will display a 'draft' badge. Here is a sample that shows the behavior I think you are looking for. Where is a 40-hour work week normal?

OK, cool. So when you were processing the data, it looks like a separate feature layer was created for each vegetation zone. What you would want to do instead is keep all of the vegetation data in the same feature layer, and have an attribute that describes the vegetation zones. You could then use this attribute to drive the symbology with the Type (Unique Symbols) drawing style. So its the difference between having many layers using the location (single symbol) drawing style drawing style to represent the vegetation vs having one layer using the types (unique symbols) style to represent the different areas. We are looking to add support the location (single symbol) style in the next release of the interactive legend, but one of the reasons we didn't include it in the first release is that when a layer is symbolized in this way, the Layer List tool can perform the function of toggling the visibility of each layer on and off. Here are some samples that will hopefully assist in your project. I downloaded the dataset and then added a text field for the veg description, the resulting shapefile can be downloaded here. a sample map that I made with is can be viewed here, and the resulting interactive legend app is here. Hi Evan, Are you able to share the map so I can take a look? If not, what is the layer type you have? Is the symbology stored in the web map or in the layer? The current release supports a subset of the drawing styles the the web map is capable of achieving. One way to really be creative and personalize your apps is to focus on the content of your map and the text that goes into the map title and descriptions that help to support the message of your map. There are a lot opportunities to be creative in what you show on the map and how you describe it. there is a cool collection of maps for inspiration here .

Chris, I'm glad this isn't 'what are your top ten favorite movies?' because like most film lovers there are probably 30 movies in my top ten. I completely agree with my colleagues on the value of continuing education, but I would add that I have always appreciated working with self-starters, people who are so excited about a topic that they can't stop working with it. So I would encourage you to also spend time trying to build maps or applications that solve a specific problem or communicate a specific message to a specific audience. Ideally something you are interested in learning more about so that your passion comes through in your work. Making your own maps is a good way to learn technology in a purposeful way while at the same time allowing you to build a portfolio of your work.

I cannot speak directly to the diploma vs Masters in GIS question. To me it would be a function of your job prospects. If you are currently working in GIS and can learn on the job, that is a great way to go. If its that you are looking for ways to enter the job market, then a Masters can be a good asset to have. But really that will just help open the door to opportunities. Personally, what I look for when interviewing a candidate is passion about communicating information via maps, someone who has demonstrated that passion by creating maps either online or in print. Regarding the future of GIS, this video does a pretty good job of providing a perspective on that from Esri staff. What i'm interested in related future of GIS is to improve the ways in users interact with a map to gain information, essentially the usability and design of mapping interfaces. Regarding the underground 3D mapping, we do currently have the capabilities to do underground mapping in 3D. I'll share an example shortly.
