Hi Evan, Are you able to share the map so I can take a look?  If not, what is the layer type you have? Is the symbology stored in the web map or in the layer? I completely agree with my colleagues on the value of continuing education, but I would add that I have always appreciated working with self-starters, people who are so excited about a topic that they can't stop working with it.  So I would encourage you to also spend time trying to build maps or applications that solve a specific problem or communicate a specific message to a specific audience.  Ideally something you are interested in learning more about so that your passion comes through in your work.  Making your own maps is a good way to learn technology in a purposeful way while at the same time allowing you to build a portfolio of your work. ... I cannot speak directly to the diploma vs Masters in GIS question.  To me it would be a function of your job prospects.  If you are currently working in GIS and can learn on the job, that is a great way to go.  If its that you are looking for ways to enter the job market, then a Masters can be a good asset to have.  But really that will just help open the door to opportunities.   Personally, what I look for when interviewing a candidate is passion about communicating information via maps, someone who has demonstrated that passion by creating maps either online or in print.   Regarding the future of GIS, this video does a pretty good job of providing a perspective on that from Esri staff.   What i'm interested in related future of GIS is to improve the ways in users interact with a map to gain information, essentially the usability and design of mapping interfaces.   Regarding the underground 3D mapping, we do currently have the capabilities to do underground mapping in 3D.  I'll share an example shortly. ... Hi Cara, sorry for the slow response on this.  One strategy for this would be to do something like in this example where I have set the year field to be a range between two values.  If your goal is to show all years by default you could have the filter show dates between the first and last fiscal year.  If your goal is to show one year, you could set the start and end year to be the same value.  Either way you should provide some hint text to assist users in exploring the data.  In this case, I created the Year filter first and then type (in this case Fujita Scale) second.  This text is all defined within the map viewer when you are creating the filter.  You can also provide more custom text within the app above the filter settings.   in this example built using the filter above, you can see the default text "Filter the layer by specifying values."  In this example 2, I've authored some additional helper text add added it via the Filter Text dialog within the app configuration panel.   let me know if you have any questions. We have logged a bug for this issue "the search window is not getting fully populated with the address that I select from the suggestion list."  its targeted to be released with the February release of ArcGIS.com and the javascript api. In my testing i didn't see any functional problem related to this, i was able to successfully navigate to the feature i selected from the suggestions list.
