Now we get into the realm of permissions in AGOL. Are you part of an organization that has an AGOL account? If so, then your AGOL administrator needs to set your user account to the appropriate role before you can create content (Publisher or higher). If your role within your AGOL organization is "User", you won't be able to publish content (hosted layers) to AGOL. How do you know what your role is? Within AGOL, open "My Profile" and it will list your role. Jay

If your "clipping" is only for visual purposes within the map, and you don't actually need a clipped tiff for some downstream analysis, you can use the following to achieve a sort of "virtual clip": Create a very large polygon that covers the entire area covered by your map and then some. Edit the polygon to remove the area in which you want to see the TIFF. Think of this polygon as a "donut", with a hole in the middle. Once you've got this polygon, you can use the Raster layer, Appearance, Masking tool to block out the areas covered by the polygon. Select the TIFF in the Contents pane, then the Masking tool, and put a check in the donut polygon layer. You'll now see that the tiff is masked.

Ah, I assumed you were publishing a map service to your own in-house ArcServer. If, instead, you are relying on ArcGIS Online (AGOL) for everything, it is actually a lot easier. First thing, you cannot include basemap layers in a service - essentially they already exist as ESRI-hosted services, so remove the two "World Dark..." layers from your MXD. Once you've published your custom data as a service in AGOL, it will show up in your Content and you can add it to a Map, then select "World Dark..." as the basemap. So, to publish your data to AGOL, make sure that in ArcMap you are logged in to AGOL (File, Sign-in). Then, when you go to File, Share-As, Service, Publish Service, select "My Hosted Services" from the "Choose a connection" drop down. That should get you a lot closer to where you want to be. Be aware that this copies your data to the server and will consume some credits, but honestly data storage is a really low usage thing and hardly uses any credits for small data sets. Good luck. Jay

Thanks Melita - excellent info. I realize we are only talking a couple of inches at most, but I feel better at least understanding some of what is "behind the curtain".

Our enterprise data (typical local gov datasets) is in NAD_1983_StatePlane_Nevada_West_FIPS_2703_Feet and datum=D_North_American_1983. We have some new 3DEP lidar data that uses D_NAD_1983_2011, so I want to understand the differences between the two datums. I've used the nifty NGS NCAT program to calculate the absolute XY shift between the two datums in our vicinity: My question is: Why can't I get the same result in ArcMap? The transformation used above was automatically plugged in by ArcMap - I didn't select it. Resulting coordinates in NAD1983_2011 are shown as X2 and Y2 below. One ASSUMPTION I've used is that ESRI's D_North_American_1983 means NAD1983(1986); that isn't explicitly stated anywhere I've seen. What am I missing here?

I like the idea, but some of what you suggest is already in place, albeit not as easy as clicking one icon. In Desktop, you can use the TOC Options to change the list order to "List by Name". This appears to only affect the List by Visibility and List by Selection lists. But there is no search capability that I can see. In Pro the filter at the top of the contents pane lets you do the searching part of this, but there is no #re-order by name option AFAIK. I would support adding "List by Layer Name" to the existing list methods to both Desktop and Pro.

I've made it a habit to always convert Excel to tables rather than trying to work with Excel natively. Just too much possibility for flakiness otherwise.

Have you tried a shorter output file name or outputting to a tif rather than an ESRI GRID format? The input las filename is also really long - maybe try renaming it to something shorter. Some tools seem to have issues with long paths and/or long names.

So the software isn't finding your license. Either you haven't authorized the software or something went wrong during the process. The ArcGIS Administrator is the way to look at this: C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\ArcGIS\bin\ArcGISAdmin.exe However, your best bet at this point is probably to contact ESRI support.

I'm not sure if this will help you, but in a normal installation, the executable for ArcMap is here: C:\Program Files (x86)\ArcGIS\Desktop10.x\bin\ArcMap.exe

I generally handle this kind of situation by creating a new field named FLAG, selecting the records of interest and Calculate Field FLAG = "YES". Clear the selection, then symbolize on that new field. This is a flexible approach and very simple.

Never thought I'd agree with that statement, but yes in this case, good point! Is it possible to make some of that text available through a hyperlink? The other idea that occurs to me is to make that text part of the "Alpine Energy" graphic, which would give you more control over the font size.
