Dana, Apologies for the delay in posting this - I hope to have the Add-In hosted in the ArcGIS Explorer Labs group on ArcGIS.com shortly but for now I have simply posted the Add-In straight to ArcGIS.com: http://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=dd68c3836cb24d6d9d5030f6837e61a2. Feel free to send any feedback on this Add-In to mbranscomb@esri.com. Regards Mike

Sarah, Apologies for the delay in replying - unfortunately I didn't receive an alert to tell me the thread had been updated. My last suggestion beyond updating the graphics drivers would be to look at trying to optimise the performance of your Vista laptop - Microsoft actually publish a list of tips for this: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Optimize-Windows-Vista-for-better-performance. Finally - I forgot to ask - was this in 3D? If so, did you try switching to 2D? Regards Mike

The ArcGIS Explorer SDK for VS2010 will be available when version 1500 is released - this is likely to be around late August / early September but that's still subject to change. Regards Mike

Kathrin, When you say you see the same behaviour in ArcGlobe - is that version 10.0? It's possible this could be related to graphics card drivers - many 3D-related issues that have been reported have been resolved by upgrading the graphics drivers on the PC. You could also run the system requirements checker here: http://cyri.systemrequirementslab.com/1186/10895 just to confirm all the required 3D capabilities are sufficiently covered. Regards Mike

Nicholas, Unfortunately ArcGIS Explorer 1200 was released some time before ArcGIS 10.0 and therefore cannot read ArcGIS 10.0 Geodatabases directly. There will soon be a new release (1500) which addresses this plus provide many new features. Until the new release, you can export content from ArcGIS 10.0 as a Layer Package - this will be fine in ArcGIS Explorer 1200. If you are trying to access ArcGIS Server 10.0 services from Explorer 1200 there is a patch to support this: http://resources.arcgis.com/content/patches-and-service-packs?fa=viewPatch&PID=116&MetaID=1624. Allen, Typically content created in ArcGIS Explorer Online is saved as a map - assuming this is the case - you should be able to select the content you created then click details. On the details page beneath the thumbnail image is a link that says Open (e.g. http://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=5a98f6527a3c4cfb835ae0b4ce5fb696). Click the arrow next to this link to expand a list of applications in which to open the content - you'll need to choose ArcGIS Desktop 10.0. If ArcGIS Explorer is open it will receive the content from ArcGIS.com, otherwise I believe ArcMap will open to handle the content. Hope that helps resolve the question. Regards Mike

Robert, Checking and unchecking the checkbox of the Group Layer (presumably added as an ArcGIS Layer File or Layer Package) will control the visibility of all layers within that group. The individual layer checkboxes will not change status - this is designed to indicate exactly which Layers will be affected when the user changes the visibility at the group level. If this is a layer which will be frequently used in your Explorer sessions - and particularly if you are intending to deploy it to a user base via an Application Configuration - you could also consider writing an Extension Add-In which would search the map contents for this layer by name then set the visibility as appropriate. This would obviate users turning the visibility of all layers on then saving the map and closing - only for them all to be redrawn when the map loads next time. Regards Mike

Robert, Thanks for your post. Are your WMS externally/publically accessible? If so, I will happily test them in order to help determine why they are not successfully displaying in this case. Regards Mike

Sean, Your interpretation of the ArcGIS Explorer documentation is correct - you can deploy custom Add-Ins (.EAZ) via Application Configurations with the configuration file (.NCFG) physically containing any Add-Ins you have added via the Application Configuration Manager, in addition to a custom map you may have chosen. This means you only need to share a single file or better perhaps, configure users ArcGIS Explorer applications to start with you chosen NCFG by default. When adding custom Add-Ins - you'll need to make sure you add them to the actual UI (described in http://webhelp.esri.com/arcgisexplorer/1200//en/appconfig_customize_ui.htm#add_addins) by chosing "Add Custom Control...". Going through the process described in the above help document will add the custom Add-In to the NCFG AND ensure it is displayed in the intended place on the UI. There is another dialog (described in http://webhelp.esri.com/arcgisexplorer/1200//en/appconfig_add-ins.htm) which conveniently gives a single view of all custom Add-Ins that have been added to the configuration. This is a necessary because you may have added multiple Add-Ins and directed them to multiple different tabs. Note however, that this dialog may also show Add-Ins which have been imported to the NCFG but have yet to be assigned to display on the UI. I hope this helps Regards Mike

Dimitri, Usually I would suggest this is due to the coordinate system, or rather the lack of. However if you can add the Shapefile to ArcGIS Explorer directly without any issue then this is unlikely to be the cause. Are you able to post a Layer Package on the foum that I could test? Regards Mike

Bob, An NMF is an ArcGIS Explorer map and as such is intended to be opened as a single map. To combine the contents of the nmf with an existing map you could open the downloaded map in Explorer and export the individual layers/services you're interested in as map content (NMC) files which can be added into to existing map session. Regards Mike

Marc, ArcGIS Explorer is primarily intended as a consuming / sharing application and therefore the local data creation abilities in the API were deliberately restricted. However - in the imminent 1500 release there are some excellent new sharing capabilities in the UI. The way to programmatically create content in ArcGIS Explorer from a source such as ADO.NET is via Notes (persisted in the map) or Graphics (NOT persisted in the map). Notes can be arranged in folders and will appear in the Contents window. If you have an ArcGIS Server 10.0 accessible then you could create a layer in a Geodatabase on the server, publish a map service with feature access enabled and edit the contents via the feature service. ArcGIS Explorer could then stream this content back via the map service (you would need to clear the local map cache after any edits to the service). You could use one of the available Shapefile libraries available on the web but I would probably only recommend this as a last resort. The File GDB API is due for release in the months after 10.0.
