A classic AGOL trick is to dupe the layer of interest and then set up multiple copies with all the different styles of interest. Just rename them something useful after duplication. The real trick you'll see is designing your data table that you upload to be able to show all you want. Fun times ahead! Enjoy!

Do you want to end up with a layer that shows the variable as a dot of various color and size in the center of the ZIP code? Or do you want to make a choropleth, the typical ZIP shape colored in based on the variable? Do you have access to the Office365 plugin for Excel or not? If so, some shortcuts. Otherwise, gotta do an upload as table, then do a JOIN with the actual ZIP code layer from Living Atlas. That joins the variable from your table with the graphic so it can be styled.

Oh, one other thing in the folklore of this bug: try clearing cache in the browser. Some have had luck with that. My office forced use of MSFT Edge a while back, and many report that more of this weird stuff happens due to that. It's always something. Cheers! Let me know if you hear any better solutions, you never know when this bug will strike.

This again! So annoying. Many have had this happen to us over the last month or so. It seems to be a glitch that happens when we create layers from Excel. They are created properly, even used and edited. And if you go into a map with the layer, it works and you can even bring up the table. But, you can't edit or see the other tabs by opening from content. There's one official fix: export it as a file geodatabase, and then re-import it. Also, what worked for me, was just not doing anything and it automatically fixed itself. So, depending on your timeline and what you have to do with it, pick your option. Some have also had luck with opening the layer on a different browser and platform. I opened it first with Firefox on a Mac, and after that everything was fine. Don't know if it was coincidence. Maybe start a support call with ESRI and see if they have anything better to do now? I think they seem to know something is goofy on their server-side. Very frustrating. Good luck!

I tried the goofed up layers at work again, all are fine. 1. Opening up on Mac/different browser invoked a fix on the servers? 2. ESRI rolled out a magical fix that took care of things one night? 3. Cache in work browser expired or was refreshed? Another very weird and disturbing incident. Whenever I really really need AGOL to work, I seem to run into these problems. But, more often than not, they magically fix themselves. Cheers everybody! There were multiple threads like this, and it was great to see there was really something going on.

I tried from home on a Mac running Firefox. They goofed up layers all worked. So maybe it was a cache or windows/edge thing? Thanks for the info, everybody.

Today I tried from a different computer, a Mac at home, and the "busted" layers all worked. So maybe it is a windows/edge thing? I was using Firefox on a Mac. Or, it could be that it was a cache problem on just he 2 windows/edge machines at work. Or it could be that ESRI did a magical fix or some other routine "healed" the layers. The real test will be going on site tomorrow and seeing if they work from my office windows/edge setup.

I have the same error!!! I made a bunch of new layers to update for a major project, but now they cause this error! I can config the layers INSIDE the map...but that is not good enough. And, when I created the layers, I set up default viz and filters using the tabs on the layer. Now the other tabs like DATA and VISUALIAZATION don't even appear! Since there are others with the same issue, it MUST have been some kind of data error on the webservers? Any idea how to fix without losing the work on config of these layers? I did around 6 or 8 over a couple of days, and they all are dead now. WE MUST HAVE A FIX!

I tried the suggested fix of testing from another computer, as the suggestion said that it might be cache goofing up. Sadly, no difference. However, both were Edge...I will try again form home tonite from a Mac running Chrome and Firefox. I hope I won't have to get into a support incident...no time for it anytime soon!

I have been revising a bunch of layers, and making new layers from a better off-line Excel template. I did this over a period of weeks. I created and used the layers in an important map project, and then have not returned to the items until this morning. When created, these layers were all good, totally work. Now when I try to use "Item details" I get a red error box that flashes "Error" which is then immediately replaced by a bigger red error box that says "There was an error publishing the service". The item only has tabs for Overview, Usage, and Settings--and Settings is greyed out! So, no data tab or visual tab. The layers work...I can put them in a map, open the table in the map, style them, etc. But they are goofed up. How can I fix this? I DO NOT want to recreate all of these newly created layers!!!!!!! Maybe I need to start a support case...which will have to be weeks from now... Any ideas? How could this happen?

Wow, great blog post! Maybe not the answer the original question was asking, but very cool! It seems like either doing the dupe and using a filter with the unique FIPS numbers or some other attribute if you can is still the way to go.

I'm curious to see what people say is the best way. I've always wondered what the best technique is for common stuff like this. I'd COPY the layer, which is really just a new reference pointer to the layer, and then use a filter by # to show only the tracts of interest, then change the styling.

I think the safest way and the way the ESRI staff do it in demos is to hit the browser "reload" button. Otherwise you have to log in and out or something that is way too time consuming.
