I still have this same problem...I guess I will have to go thru tech support. So weird that it is perfect at creation, but 2 weeks later get's goofed up. Crazy.

I have the same error!!! I made a bunch of new layers to update for a major project, but now they cause this error! I can config the layers INSIDE the map...but that is not good enough. And, when I created the layers, I set up default viz and filters using the tabs on the layer. Now the other tabs like DATA and VISUALIAZATION don't even appear! Since there are others with the same issue, it MUST have been some kind of data error on the webservers? Any idea how to fix without losing the work on config of these layers? I did around 6 or 8 over a couple of days, and they all are dead now. WE MUST HAVE A FIX!

I tried the suggested fix of testing from another computer, as the suggestion said that it might be cache goofing up. Sadly, no difference. However, both were Edge...I will try again form home tonite from a Mac running Chrome and Firefox. I hope I won't have to get into a support incident...no time for it anytime soon!

I have been revising a bunch of layers, and making new layers from a better off-line Excel template. I did this over a period of weeks. I created and used the layers in an important map project, and then have not returned to the items until this morning. When created, these layers were all good, totally work. Now when I try to use "Item details" I get a red error box that flashes "Error" which is then immediately replaced by a bigger red error box that says "There was an error publishing the service". The item only has tabs for Overview, Usage, and Settings--and Settings is greyed out! So, no data tab or visual tab. The layers work...I can put them in a map, open the table in the map, style them, etc. But they are goofed up. How can I fix this? I DO NOT want to recreate all of these newly created layers!!!!!!! Maybe I need to start a support case...which will have to be weeks from now... Any ideas? How could this happen?

Wow, great blog post! Maybe not the answer the original question was asking, but very cool! It seems like either doing the dupe and using a filter with the unique FIPS numbers or some other attribute if you can is still the way to go.

I'm curious to see what people say is the best way. I've always wondered what the best technique is for common stuff like this. I'd COPY the layer, which is really just a new reference pointer to the layer, and then use a filter by # to show only the tracts of interest, then change the styling.

I think the safest way and the way the ESRI staff do it in demos is to hit the browser "reload" button. Otherwise you have to log in and out or something that is way too time consuming.

Thanks for this. So, normally the anchor would be the center of the x by y pixel bounding box? To "cheat" it into where you want to be, add blank space to the bottom so that the new bounding box anchor point is where you want it? I've wondered about this for years...didn't know the proper term to ask! Thanks!

Yes, this area doesn't get a lot of discussion! You are correct, in my experience. You MUST put the image file somewhere convenient in your AGOL content, and then share just those symbol items to the whole world.

I use the JOIN command quite a bit to add data to ZIP layers. So, I do a JOIN on the ZIP field. Does JOIN convert types to match? E.g. if I JOIN on ZIP that is integer and the other layer ZIP is a string (as it should be) will the JOIN work? I got this question from a colleague and I simply don't know. I haven't run into it. The Living Atlas ZIP layer the ZIP filed as a string, and I usually type mine as string when upload data. Has anybody done this experiment? Is there a known spec on the JOIN command, e.g. would integer = 2 match a float = 2? I'd love to see a doc or answer to this, just in case... Thank You.

Sadly, this just seems to be something that happens from time to time. Often doing the same thing from different browser, or from home vs work net randomly works or not works. I haven't had a recurrence of this in a long while--I hope it stays away permanently!!! If you look at the whole thread, sometimes ESRI knows they had a spot problem, and fix it. I've had this problem on fancy "hard" analyses and stuff as generic as making a drive-time plot. It's weird. Good luck!

Actually I did d/l the A4Excel on my home setup: work does not allow appsource!!! But it was pretty cool, it worked with my private "home" Office365 auth, and this was on my Mac!!! Blew my mind. I will experiment more...but my biggest problem is what do at work for my users and myself. Thanks!
