Although the tool has not created geometry yet for HI based upon the error code - there's a Support Page here - 040401: NULL geometry ignored. ObjectID = <value>.—ArcGIS Pro | Documentation - that identifies the error code and solution. One idea is to create a new attribute in the layer called Extent_Indicator.  Then calculate it 'yes' or 'no'.  From there use Definition Query on the layer to only draw those points that have a value of 'yes'.  Then label those items. ... View more

Great to hear you're working with Esri Support on this one.  A few other things to try: 1) Clear cache of the software: In order to clear cache of the software kindly launch ArcGIS Pro > click Settings > click Options > click Display. Click the Clear cache box > click Ok > restart application. 2) Option Check: Launch ArcGIS Pro > click Settings > click Options > click Display. Change the Antialiasing mode to Fast (default) or Normal. Change the Rendering quality from Best toward Low. Uncheck the Enable hardware antialiasing check box. Change the Rendering engine from DirectX to OpenGL.  If this does not lead to a performance improvement, switch back to DirectX. 3) Repair software: In order to repair the software, kindly; close the applications. Open Control Panel > under Programs and Features > click Uninstall Programs. Right click on ArcGIS Pro > click uninstall/change. Once the small installation windows opened, click repair > hit next a few time > click Finish. Relaunch project and observed the layout tab. Testing this on my ArcGIS Pro and this appears to be expected behavior when you add a new field to the Unique Symbology item.  I'd recommend you add both fields first, then create the symbology second.  That way it doesn't remove the formatting. ... View more

@Maine - by chance are you using the Explore tool on a temporary layer (create layer from selected features)?  If so, there is BUG-000168426 - In ArcGIS Pro, when a feature in a (temporary) layer made up of selected features (created by first making a selection of features on a feature layer using Select By Attributes, and then right click on the layer > Selection > Make Layer From Selected Features)) is selected by the Explore tool (using a left mouse-click), the corresponding pop-out will show attributes for all the features within the layer and not just for the selected feature. ... You're welcome.  So it may be something of note - you mentioned you've done a lot of GP in the project.  Sometimes clearing the GP History helps with strange errors.  You can do this by going to the Analysis tab->Geoprocessing group and History.  This opens the History tab.  Select all GP tools run and delete them.  Then test the backup in progress again.  Does it still hang? ...
