Interesting article from 2012! I like it. When I'm done teaching classes this week, I'll attempt to build a function chain in ArcGIS Pro to see if I can mimic the workflow. If successful, then I will share it out as a Project Package to you.

I'm not a Python coder by any stretch of the imagination but I wonder if the space in your path is the issue? Your current output path is C:\Yusef\Pembrokeshire SPACE Avifauna\Output\Ex2_Barn SPACE Owl.png. Try removing the spaces or use an underscore instead. Does the error message persist?

One Esri support call that saw a similar crash had the user go in and uninstall/reinstall AGP and then the notepad worked as expected. Might be worth a try? If that does not work, then I'd recommend you call Esri Support Services to get a ticket created with an analyst.

Great to hear Aaron and nice job of digging deeper into the XML files too! If you feel my response is correct, please mark it so to properly close out the thread. I'd be curious to hear what Esri Support comes back with as well. All the best!

Interesting - 1 step forward, 2 steps back it seems. So question - is your ArcGIS Pro application installed on your C:/Program Files/ArcGIS/Pro folder or somewhere else? In reviewing Support calls, this was one causal factor of AGP crashing when adding a notebook. Other things to consider - are there any non-ArcGIS Python installations on your machine such as Anaconda? If you create a new workbook vs adding one, does ArcGIS Pro crash? Do you have the Data Interoperability extension installed and if so, is it the current release?

Very strange. Whenever I see odd AGP operations, I take a somewhat drastic method to reset AGP. Go into your C:\Users\<user_profile>\appdata\local and C:\Users\<user_profile>\appdata\roaming directories and rename the Esri folder to Esri_Old or something similar. This resets AGP to factory settings. Keep in mind that you will lose any ArcGIS Desktop customizations you've done in the past. Hence renaming the Esri folder to Esri_Old - you can go back to it if you prefer. Restart AGP and attempt the workflow again. What is the result?

Aaron - one last thing to try, albeit somewhat extreme, is to rename the ESRI folder in your C:\Users\<user_profile>\appdata\local and C:\Users\<user_profile>\appdata\roaming to ESRI_OLD. Then restart ArcGIS Pro and attempt the workflow again. What is the result? By renaming the ESRI folder in the 2 folders, it basically resets AGP back to factory settings as it were and you use any ArcGIS Desktop customization you've done in the past.

I understand Keith. Not sure what ArcMap was doing behind the scenes to make this effect work. Maybe there's some type of transparency occurring here?

Nada - your best solution to email the authors of the documents I listed in my earlier response as they are Subject Matter Experts in this domain. That way you may get the assistance quickly that you need. This particular area of the technology is not my strong suite.

Not to my knowledge. ArcGIS Pro 2.6 should drop in the next month or so - so would be good to test at the new release.

By chance is the "Current Display Extent" in the Environments->Processing Extent for the GP tool selected? The reason I ask is the only case I see in the Esri internals mentions this item causing the error code crash you listed. Try this - select another parameter than "Current Display Extent" for the Environments->Processing Extent as re-run the tool. What is the result?

Bert - I researched your question about UNC paths and Notebooks and there was a Support Service request for this exact item. It is reproducible in AGP 2.5.0 and 2.5.1. As the case was in mid-June, AGP 2.5.2 was not yet released publicly. The current workaround is as follows: "we are currently unable to connect directly to the UNC path within ArcGIS Pro, as a workaround though aside from mapping the drive we can create a symbolic link to the UNC path reference: https://support.esri.com/en/Technical-Article/000022743 which will create a shortcut to the UNC folder, this is the recommended workflow to follow," Hope this helps!

Jamal - I received a reply back from the AGP Dev Team and based upon your question, the enhancement issue request for this item has been created for a future AGP 2.x release. AGP 2.6.0 is nearly complete with regard to a Release Candidate so it will not be in the AGP 2.6 iteration. Let me know if you have additional questions.

George - a couple things, when you're completing the output parameter - are you double clicking on the file geodatabase to "go-in" to it and then typing the output feature class name? In addition, there's some good information in this GeoNet thread. Related - the Tool Reference page for ArcGIS Pro lists a solution here. Sometimes it's as easy as using File Explorer and right clicking the folder that the file geodatabase is located, right-click->Properties and uncheck the "Read-Only" box.

In researching the bug reports: BUG-000121467 - "when saving and reopening a project, ArcGIS Pro prompts for a login with an empty username and password although the "Save Username/Password" option is checked from the last instance of running the app" was only reproducible in ArcGIS Pro 2.3.0, 2.3.1, and 2.3.2 but not in ArcGIS Pro 2.4. BUG-000126431 - "the option to save username and password in the connection file is ignored for the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) services in ArcGIS Pro." According to this GeoNet thread, it seems to be fixed at 2.5.0 and tested at 2.5.1.
