If you read my original post, "Now this would be OK if the MXD's and the SDE connection files wouldn't regularly "forget" that we pointed it to a specific version" I source their connection files to the version but it reverts back to default sometimes and also within their MXD I find that all the sudden it is pointing to the Default as well. My question is not how to use this "as is" by giving them access to the SDE user nor is it about making it easier for me to remember to post everyone versions. My question is how do I let them post to the Default themselves but only within a version? We are on SQL Server 2012, is this something I can do on the back end?

We are on 10.2.2 currently on both desktop and SDE. No, the users created their connections once and I help most of them do so. As I said, these are an "every now and then" user base so they forget sometimes. And we are using OS Authentication. Yes, I do know that having it protected means that only I can post the changes with the SDE password. That is why I am asking this question because I don't want to QAQC my users (I don't own their data) and I don't want to have to remember to post on a regular basis. My users also don't always tell me if they want to edit in the SDE so I can't be proactive about it.

So I have a situation where I would like to have my editors freely post data on their versions to the Default without me doing for them with the super secret SDE user. I have the DEFAULT set as protected right now because if I allow it to be public, then the user can freely edit without using a version! Now this would be OK if the MXD's and the SDE connection files wouldn't regularly "forget" that we pointed it to a specific version. My users are an "every now and then" user of GIS so to force them to check that the data is indeed pointing to the version is not feasible. They do not usually notify me that they are going to edit either, so I forget to do a regular post/reconcile. So, is there ANY way that I can make my users have the rights to post data but be restricted to editing ONLY in a version??

There are less than 10 people using the 5 Advanced licenses and about 50 using 6 Basics. We had recently gotten another 10 people or so with ArcGIS and I expect a few more to move up to Advanced level soon. We are starting to hire more people with GIS experience in all kinds of fields so I expect our usage to grow over the next few years exponentially. I just got some info from OpenLM, love the price and they have some great abilities, we can revoke licenses, track usage and up times, and do all kinds of statistics. I can even set up tracking for programs without a license manager such as ArcPro or even Notepad (silly), so that is REALLY neat! For everything I want, the cost is ~3k, the basics are $1500 and the up times (Actual Usage extension) is $1500. Flexera just told me 20k minimum for super basics, OUCH! No thanks! Thanks for the other links, I'll check them out!

Ok I ran across some python scripts but they don't seem to work... Python is not my thing, I can do some stuff but not much. lmgrd log file parser · GitHub I see the script is searching for certain words so I was looking at the lmgrd and noticed that a lot of date times are repeated (literally down to the second), not sure what that means. For peak active connections, I am not sure if that means that we were maxed out??? During about 3 weeks time, I counted 380 OUT's for ArcInfo and 134 for Viewer and 135 Peak Active Connections, what does this mean?? Does anyone out there know how to interpret an lmgrd? also I am considering a cheap solution for license tracking, my boss said go ahead and research! So does anyone have a reasonable cost solution? less than $5k is ideal.

Great thread! When applying for any job, always tailor the resume and cover letter to that specific job. Use keywords from the job posting to get through the automated program and HR. If the application allows for one, ALWAYS make a cover letter! After an interview, it is wise to send a thank you email to the interview panel or at least the main hiring manager. Always be courteous and think before opening your mouth! How you interview is the most important. If you are nervous, don't worry. It's more about how you talk about your knowledge and demonstrating you know these things and aren't talking out of your you-know-what. Also if English isn't your native language, try to speak clearly because a few people I have interviewed I couldn't say yes to because I understood maybe 2 words the whole 30 minute interview. I had no idea if they actually understood us or if they answered any questions appropriately Most of the time GIS jobs require being a liaison or coordinating and interfacing with a lot of people so you need to demonstrate you can communicate clearly. I always start with "describe your experience with GIS..." and talk about the jobs and education relevant. Don't just read off your resume, I have it in front of me! For every job experience that you have, reference a project or map or something you did there that was significant or also describing your main job duties but going into more depth than the one liner in the resume. It's a huge deal to go into details to show them that you actually know what you are talking about. A portfolio is HUGE! If you can show maps and reports and other work that you did, bring it! Even in phone interviews when you can't show them anything, talk at length specifically about different projects and maps. You want to prepare ahead of time which projects or things you did that are relevant to this particular job. Have something for every job just in case they ask specifically about one. I don't like putting candidates through tests because it makes everyone nervous and the nervous really nervous! I do, however, ask a few technical questions that are oddball but easy for the experienced GIS professional to answer to see if they actually know their stuff. Sometimes the oddball is defining what a layer file is or something about projections, stuff that would catch a smooth talker off guard or someone that is lying (had several of both kinds). It usually depends on what I see in the pile of resumes and the level we are hiring at. I pick a few random things out of the resumes whether it's something I saw that was questionable in one resume or something common in all. If you don't know the answer off the top of your head, the best answer is that you don't know and to expand on what you think it might be and maybe reference something similar that you do know or at least how you would find out the answer. The best guy I ever hired couldn't answer some of them but the way he talked about his knowledge and the way he approached these questions made me confirm that he was intelligent, he was fresh out of college so I expected some "I don't know" answers. I just want someone that can own up to their lack of knowledge and be willing to research and learn, this goes for all skill levels. For education, I like to see a BS in Geography and if they had taken GIS courses, whether from ESRI or college, because it's really good for getting into the spatial way of thinking and gives them a good base of knowledge. Masters in GIS is a plus too. Education definitely is a plus overall but not a deal breaker. The job experiences and how they interview are the most important. I want to see a real world application of GIS and for fresh out of college students I want to see enough base GIS and Geography knowledge to jump start your career. Certifications like the GISP don't matter to me all that much. It just means you jumped through hoops and paid money to prove you know the basics. Not everyone is a good test taker and not everyone is willing to pay for it, so it's nice but that doesn't prove much to me. Also dress appropriately. I like to see suits and combed hair! And don't go overboard with perfume and cologne, it impresses no one, especially those allergic to it.

Thanks V Stuart Foote! Is there any documentation or python examples for this? My python skills are limited, I can do some admin tasks using it but it's not often I dive into it. I'm not a programmer by any means, but I try!

Looking across the forum I see this: OpenLM for ArcGIS | OpenLM - Software usage monitoring & management but it looks pricey for our budget. So I'll have to justify more cost to buy more software in order to track usage to buy even more seems silly. anyone have anything free that reads just simple things like we reached max capacity 3 times today and 4 people got locked out? Or something like that?

The ones I am testing are not exposed. There are a few rather large map services (many layers) that I would like to get KML network links for but unfortunately my ArcServer spins forever and never lets me make one. The one I have for recycling centers for the whole state works great but that is one layer only in the map service, the labeling does come out horrid though. Another I tried with a KML network link is the land ownership layer for NV as the only layer in a map service. It gives me a warning icon next to the check box but won't tell me what the error is nor display anything. If I zoom to it, it does zoom correctly to NV so it is getting something from the service. I tried my NAIP 2013 and a DEM 10M as well (separate services as KML network links). I shall also note here that in Google Earth the same thing occurred on all these. On REST services I can add those all day but it only gives me what is already turned on and I can't see any of the layers to manage them individually. not sure also if there is a searching ability on these things I am adding, I haven't seen a way to do so yet, but I've only opened it a few times. Also the BIGGEST issue is the historical imagery... where is it? This is the main reason that people in my department use Google Earth.

I want to increase the number of licenses we have but in order to justify it to the budget committee I need to prove that people are getting locked out often and that we are at max capacity often. Is there a way to track this?

Apparently the KML network links and the REST services have limitations on size as well.... I can't push this out to my people "as is"....

I am unable to purchase the imagery extension because of the huge cost that doesn't fit in our budget. I have a mosaic dataset already for our users to use in their MXD's but I need to publish this for use in our internal and public web maps. I never had a raster problem before, I have mosaiced and georeferenced large imagery for years but 10.x has made things so difficult it seems. I want ERDAS imagine but that is also much more than our budget as well. This is imagery is comprised of 4000+ individual Tiff images equal to about 1.25 TB. I am running this on beefed up server machines using ArcCatalog, Python, or ArcPro. I also have been running this locally all contained on the same server. Here is what I have tried so far (each multiple times with various changes): 1. mosaic in one Tiff image is 0.99 TB before pyramids, with it climbs to 8 TB so I scrapped that. That is just absurd! 2. I tried to mosaic in a File GDB but my configuration keyword never stuck (ESRI says there is no way to tell if a keyword was applied). The image stopped processing at 1 TB even. 3. I tried to mosaic in an Oracle SDE, this crashed as well, tried this various ways using various tools/environment settings) 4. I tried to mosaic again in the Oracle SDE but this time with a JPG compression but JPG doesn't support 4 bands so I used a layer file dropping that 3rd band. I used this successfully with one image but when I try it wit hte 4000+ it crashes about halfway. 5. I tried using ArcGIS Pro from ESRI Tech support advice, this failed the same as every other process 6. I tried multiple variations (from above) in Python scripts that crash asfter a week or 2. Half the state finishes. I have tried for almost a year now (constantly running something) trying to mosaic this imagery and have failed time and time again. Each time I run this it sits for 2 months minimum running in Arc Catalog, few weeks in ArcPro, and a week or so in Python. I have tried everything short of a raster catalog. I am going to be trying with the free opensource QGIS today or tomorrow and then I am throwing my hands up and using a raster catalog. ESRI support (multiple calls) has not offered me anything useful other than a sales pitch for the imagery extension that I repeatedly state is beyond the means of our budget. So what is the future for Raster Catalogs? Will they be supported in future versions? Would it be wise to go this route? At the moment it may be my only option. I need to do this every 2-3 years. Suggestions? comments?

I did mention the CSV. I also just now copied the data into a new unsaved Excel and saved as a text file. I get the same error. I thought it was different also (that always seems to be the reason for a join error) but why would the summarize on that column show multiple matches?

Checked that already as well as nulls and hidden spaces. I even removed all formatting in the Excel prior to exporting just to be sure. I have been having more troubles with Excel since 10.0 than I ever have, ugh!
