Glen, I'm guessing that this probably doesn't work because you have two different things going on. When you select an item in the list by using the index [0], you are grabbing that one item out of the list. If every method does not work (Select by location, Clip, Intersect, etc), You might have to first break the 15 million record shapefile into 2, 3, or 4 separate shapefiles. So is the layer already in the map? Perhaps when you are running it through the Python window, you aren't needing to create another layer object because it is already in the map, so you just call the layer. Once it is in a script, you are creating a layer (not in the map) are making a selection and wanting to zoom, but it isn't really in the map yet. Not sure if this is it, but just a though. If your layer is in the map, could you instead use ListLayers and use a wildcard to find the applicable layer and then perform the selection on that layer object? ... View more
