I have a surveyor working on collecting manhole data, we have since hired another surveyor to collect manhole data. I have 2 shape files, all have similar data, but I need to get them into 1 file. Can someone take a look at these and tell me the best way to do this? I'm guessing I will have to map fields somehow, but have not ever done this being a newbie. Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated. Not asking anyone to do this for me, but just need a little direction on the process. Thanks much.

I am working for an engineering firm. We have a history of 20 years of existing projects. We are looking at creating some sort of database to house information on all projects done in the past. FOr instance, if we are working in an area, and would like to search that area for other jobs we have done it would draw a map or printout a list of projects for us. Does anyone have an idea of the best way to do this? Would you just put a point on a map, with attributes assigned? IS there an "in the can" package that would help us organize this? Any help would be greatly appreciated. We are just starting the discussions on this type of project so any feedback would help. Thanks

I have started using this copy/past method. One thing I notice is the attributes on the layer I am copying don't copy to the new layer. Any idea how I can duplicate my attributes to the new layer?

iv'e finally started using the water, flow symbol. Now a couple more questions. How do I make the symbol (arrow) bigger, and I would like to display the arrow at the middle of the line, and the end of the line. Any way to do that? Thanks

maybe "move" was the wrong term. "Change" layers is what I want to do. It is easy for me to see what lines I have edited if I change them to a layer of different color/properties.

thanks for the reply. That "copies" the object to a new layer, but doesn't "move" it to another layer. Is that correct or did I miss something. Thanks again Mike

is there a way to change a line from one layer to another? I am coming from a cad background and this was quite easy. Just wondering how it is done in arcmap. Thanks for any help you can give. MKH

working on a sewer project and assigning new names to about 1500 manholes. Is there a way to check my data to see if there are duplicate names that I have assigned? If so, can you point me in the right direction? Thanks

I apologize for asking such a newbie question but how do I assign the water flow symbol to that line? I have always just used the std. symbols from the list.

sorry for the confusion, and I appreciate your reply. To answer your question, I have actual elevations in the "us_elev" and "ds_elev" fields. FOr instance, US could be 501.00 and DS could be 499.9, indicating that I want the arrow pointing to the lower number. Forgive my ignorance, as I am really new at this! Mike

so I had to draw them in the direction of flow for that to work? I was hoping I could just use the arrow to point to the "ds_elev" (for downstream) field. Not possible?

I am using a shape file for my sewer lines, each line has an upstream elevation and a downstream elevation field. Is there a way to show my line pointing to the downstream elevations, thus showing the flow of the sewer line? Thanks for any help you can give.
