I found the answer to my question. You do not need to upgrade your 10.0 ArcSDE to 10.1 ArcSDE while you are in the process of updating your ArcGIS Server and ArcGIS Desktop from 10.0 to 10.1. Below is the Help documentation in the online resources. Client and geodatabase compatibility: http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/index.html#//003n00000008000000 Upgrading a geodatabase in SQL Server: http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/002q/002q000000m9000000.htm Compatibility when connecting directly from ArcGIS clients to geodatabases in SQL Server: http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/002q/002q000000n9000000.htm Connecting from newer clients to older release geodatabases allows you to use the geodatabase without having to upgrade the geodatabase at the same time the clients are upgraded. It also allows you to have mixed-release client installations at your site. For example, if one department uses a custom application that has not been updated to work with 10.1, you can keep the geodatabase at the 9.3 release, keep this group of users on a 9.3 client release, and upgrade the clients for the rest of the agency. Be aware, though, that the 10.1 clients cannot use 10.1 functionality until the geodatabase has been upgraded to 10.1. ???To connect from an ArcGIS client to a previous release enterprise geodatabase, the geodatabase has to be upgraded to the latest service pack or patch for its release. For example, if you want to connect from ArcGIS 10.1 for Desktop to a 9.3.1 enterprise geodatabase, you must apply the most recent 9.3.1 service pack or patch to the geodatabase. Compatibility of ArcGIS 10.1 for Server with previous versions: http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/index.html#//0154000005zs000000 Do all the components of my site need to be running the same 10.1 service pack? You should ensure that the GIS server and Web Adaptor components of your site are running at the same 10.1 service pack level. This should also be the same service pack level that you use with ArcGIS for Desktop. ArcSDE does not have to be at the same version or service pack level as ArcGIS for Server. See Client and geodatabase compatibility. Hope this helps someone else! Janie

My question though is do I NEED to do the ArcSDE upgrade during the upgrade of ArcGIS Server from 10.0 to 10.1? If I do need to do this upgrade, at which point do I do this? Before registering my SQL databases? I am doing an in place upgrade on the same server. Janie

You don't need SSL for web adaptor. Some orgs require it, if so follow this procedure in the help link you posted: Enabling SSL on ArcGIS Server when accessed through the ArcGIS Web Adaptor http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/index.html#//015400000600000000 Thanks! I was hoping if I use the ArcGIS Server security store, I wouldn't need the SSL. Thanks, Janie

If we install the ArcGIS Web Adaptor on our Enterprise Web Server and have it forward requests to our internal ArcGIS Server site, is it necessary to enable SSL? I understand security is enabled on ArcGIS Server 10.1 now at install. That was not the case in 10.0. Is it necessary to go to SSL for the Web Adaptor to access the ArcGIS Server Site? I just read this and was concerned: http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/index.html#/Enabling_SSL_on_ArcGIS_Server_when_accessed_through_the_ArcGIS_Web_Adaptor/015400000600000000/ Thanks for help, Janie

Hi, I am upgrading ArcGIS Server from 10.0 to 10.1 and I am running Windows 2008 R2 with IIS on both servers. I have an Enterprise Web Server and an ArcGIS Server that has the SQL Server SDE 10.0 on it also. From all the reading getting ready, my understanding is I uninstall the old version 10.0. Then I install ArcGIS Server 10.1 on the ArcGIS Server. Then I make the web Site on the ArcGIS Server. I register all my SDE gdbs on the ArcGIS Server. I recreate all my web services on the ArcGIS Server. Then I install the Web Apaptor on the Enterprise Web Server. In my reading of the documentation and watching the really helpful short videos on the installation process, I didn't see anything about when or if I would need to upgrade my SDE to 10.1. I do have an ArcSDE_Windows_101... iso file on my installation media. I, of course, have the Desktop and ArcGIS server iso files on the installation media. Bottom line is do I run the ArcSDE Windows 10.1 install? If I do at which step or point do I run this in the installation process? Helpful installation videos: http://blogs.esri.com/esri/arcgis/2012/06/20/new-videos-walk-you-through-arcgis-10-1-for-server/ Thanks, Janie

Thank you so much! I appreciate your response. I wasn't sure without a connection, if I could get far enough to do the analysis of the MXDs at 10.1. This is wonderful. Thanks, Janie

Hi, I understand the MXD Analysis on 10.1 is more rigourous than in release 10.0. I still have all my 10.0 installed in Desktop and ArcGIS Server. Is it possible to uninstall Desktop 10.0 on a laptop. Then install Desktop 10.1 to analyze my mxds BEFORE I install 10.1 ArcGIS Server? I don't want to be down fixing MXDs for awhile during my ArcGIS Server installation and the republishing of all my maps webservices at 10.1. I am trying to have everything cleaned up before I "go live". Thanks, Janie

Hi, I thought that was the web adaptor's job from reading this: "For development or testing, you don't need a dedicated web server: ArcGIS Server exposes web services out of the box. For production sites, you use the Web Adaptor to connect your web server to the site." I thought the users connect to the web adaptor on the Enterprise Web Server? Janie

The Enterprise Web Server is of course forward facing. The ArcGIS server is an internal server. We have some flexviewer web apps for outside internet use and some for internal use only. Any ideas? Thanks, Janie

The only documentation that got close to this subject is: http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/0154/0154000002nz000000.htm The table at the bottom of the document says: "For development or testing, you don't need a dedicated web server: ArcGIS Server exposes web services out of the box. Thanks so much for the response! The one hour webinar last week was really helpful. I'll start on the videos it mentioned about the installation and configuring. http://blogs.esri.com/esri/arcgis/2012/06/20/new-videos-walk-you-through-arcgis-10-1-for-server/ Thanks, Janie
