Is it necessary to enable SSL if the ArcGIS Web Adaptor forwards request 2 ServerSite

If we install the ArcGIS Web Adaptor on our Enterprise Web Server and have it forward requests to our internal ArcGIS Server site, is it necessary to enable SSL? I understand security is enabled on ArcGIS Server 10.1 now at install. That was not the case in 10.0. Is it necessary to go to SSL for the Web Adaptor to access the ArcGIS Server Site?

You don't need SSL for web adaptor. Some orgs require it, if so follow this procedure in the help link you posted:

If you just use the arcgis security store your login details will be passed in clear, if you are concerned about this you need to use SSL or digest to encrypt the log in messages, see:
