your second option sounds reasonable to me. just as a reminder, in Leaflet, when you call L.circle.toGeoJSON(), all that is returned is a point. i wrote/cribbed some code to generate actual polygonal geometries and calculate area that you can check out here, but i'd argue it might be overkill in this case.

Esri is pleased to be sponsoring the inaugural Maps Camp on July 9th, 2016 at UN Headquarters in New York City. This low cost, single day event is one of over 30 OpenCamps that will bring together 6,000+ attendees excited about engaging with open source communities. We've had a great time collaborating with folks from Mapzen, MapBox, CartoDB and OpenStreetMap US to curate the content and can't wait to see you there! Maps Camp will be a smorgasbord of talks, panels, and workshops to discuss the intersection of mapping and open source. We'll discuss the history of GPS, philosophies of OSS and the future. If you're in the area, we sincerely hope you can join us. If you'd like to give a lightning talk of your own, even better! At a bare minimum, I beseech you to let your friends on the East Coast know about this fun filled day of geo-geekery. For more information on the event and to register, visit the Maps Camp website. You can also engage with the organizing committee on Twitter @maps_camp, via email, or through the Maps Camp GitHub repo. And as always, feel free to get in touch via Twitter @EsriGeoDev!

if you're asking about individual transparent tiles, check out the article below. How To: Configure the cache folder to display a 'Data not available' tile for empty map cache areas or missing tiles if you're asking whether anyone has created a real map service with cached tiles for the whole world that are all entirely transparent, i kinda doubt it.

the first and easiest option for displaying ArcGIS Online content in a Leaflet application that is not shared publicly is to embed credentials directly in your javascript and fetch a token automatically. this is an EXTREMELY bad idea because you are exposing sensitive credentials in the code that is downloaded to each and every browser that ever opens your website. L.esri.post('https://www.arcgis.com/sharing/rest/generateToken', {
username: 'johndoe',
password: 'password123',
f: 'json',
expiration: 60,
client: 'referer',
referer: window.location.origin
}, callback); complete sample: http://esri.github.io/esri-leaflet/examples/arcgis-server-auth.html a second, more difficult, and more production appropriate option is to utilize a server side proxy to hide the username and password in code that is NOT accessible to your end users so that the proxy can broker requests to secure resources and append a token on its own. L.esri.featureLayer({
url: './proxy.ashx?http://services.arcgis.com/uasgdsgd/arcgis/rest/services/SelectivelyShared/FeatureServer/0'
}).addTo(map); Open Source proxies in ASP.NET, PHP and Java that we host on GitHub https://github.com/Esri/resource-proxy/ Some conceptual information from the ArcGIS API for JavaScript 3.x documentation https://developers.arcgis.com/javascript/3/jshelp/ags_proxy.html no matter what you do, you'll need to make sure you are honoring your license agreement and making sure the private content is only accessed by the number of ArcGIS Online named users you're paying for.

Hi Patrick, since you didn't provide any code, its tough to say. my best guess is that you aren't passing in the url of the service itself in the layer constructor appropriately. this is easy to do, since we made a breaking change at version 1.0 of our plugins. more info here: Esri Leaflet 1.0.0 Announcement · Esri/esri-leaflet Wiki · GitHub

honestly, im still trying to wrap my head around your question to determine the best course of action. i'm 99% certain that its normal that only non CORS requests will attempt to wrap the response in a JS callback to get around cross-origin security restrictions. but i'll have to dig in deeper in order to determine why you're not able to get access to the results of the second GP task. are the services that you're making calls to public? either way, can you provide a simplified repro case?

currently, the protocol used to make requests to ArcGIS Online's World Geocoding Service is inherited from what is used in your own application (ie: if you host over https, as will be required by Chrome 50 to leverage HTML5 Geolocation, geocoding requests will be encrypted too). that being said, if i'm understanding your suggestion correctly, it would be trivial (and probably helpful) for us to just hardcode https as the protocol instead of inheriting from the application. relevant source code is here.

hi jim, sorry it took me so long to see this post. its definitely expected behavior that Esri Leaflet queries the current map extent for a subset of the features stored in your actual service, but i'm surprised to hear that you're seeing an inconsistent count for a single view. can you share a url to your service so that i can take a look?

that's not really an esri leaflet question so much as a generic HTML/JS UI question. you might check out bootstrap button dropdowns http://getbootstrap.com/components/#btn-dropdowns-single . another alternative is to write your own javascript to listen for when someone clicks on the button and programmatically display an entirely new <div>. i'd be happy to review a fiddle if you want to give it a try and get stuck.
