Andrew, just to clarify, the issue i documented earlier in this thread is not the same issue that Adrian is referring to, and it is not a JS API bug, but rather a problem with the REST response itself. i'd be happy to log a new NIM for this issue, but i'm not quite sure i understand the use case for formatting a request to explicitly include a layer that you don't want to be returned.

i did some more testing this morning and i made a mistake yesterday in stating that the identify operation doesn't take scale into account. while a scale value is not explicitly supplied, it is necessary to pass in a map extent when identifying. in my tests, rightfully, the values returned given a specific tolerance were different depending on the extent. identifyParams.layerIds = [1,2,3,4,5,6,7,9]; i took a look at the REST documentation and it confirms your expectation that using visible in conjunction with explicitly declared layers should only return results if a returned item is included in one of layers requested AND and would be visible in the map service at the current extent. http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/rest/apiref/identify.html i put together a sample application which seems to demonstrate that this is not the case, as a layer index will be returned (even if it has a default visibility of FALSE in the map service) http://jsfiddle.net/jagravois/nPpp9/1/ all in all, it seems that you should be able to get the results you want by not asking for a specific layer if you don't want it to be included in the result, whether you are using VISIBLE or ALL as your layerOption parameter. i hope this information helps.

hi steve, you can certainly publish your shapefile data in WGS84. the reason it is often suggested to reproject to web mercator is so that you can mash things up with google/esri//bing/osm without asking your own dynamic map and feature layers to reproject on the fly. depending on the data you are trying to display, this can give a noticeable performance improvement. the blog you linked warns specifically about caching services in a projection other than web mercator. this is because it is NOT possible to overlay two different tiled map services that use different coordinate systems.

hi andrew, LAYER_OPTION_VISIBLE means checked on in the map document used to create the map service, whether or not they show up at a particular scale. if you take JavaScript out of the equation and attempt to identify a feature directly in REST, you will notice that you pass in geometry to help you search, but you don't pass in any information about a particular scale. see the following thread for more information.

shouldn't it work fine in the print legend? the legend widget doesn't work "inside of" the print widget. the print widget makes a call to generate an entirely new legend on the server and as far as i know, the legendLayer class doesn't yet incorporate an approach for specifying individual layer titles.

during a technical support incident Joanne and i noticed that the problem was isolated to situations in which other layers are provided prior to the DynamicMapService with a dynamic client side renderer in the array of layerInfos, or when layerInfos are not specified in the constructor for the legend widget at all. i logged the following defect on her behalf: [#NIM085566 When no layerInfos are passed to the legend widget, labels are not updated to reflect new class breaks when the symbology is updated. ] please don't hesitate to contact support if you would like to have your name added to the list of customers affected by this issue.

you could include a group layer in your map service called "Building classes" and include it in the legendLayers being passed to your layoutOptions.

you'd probably have more luck in searching in the ArcGIS Desktop forums than here in API for JavaScript, but you might try the following steps A. Close all ESRI products B. Locate the ESRI folder under: On Win XP: browse to C:\documents and settings\\Application Data (you may have to allow hidden files to be shown, from the Windows Explorer -> Tools -> folder Options -> View page) On Vista or Win7: browse to c:\users\\AppData\Roaming\ESRI C. rename the ESRI folder to ESRI_OLD D. Run Regedit (Start menu -> Run -> regedit) E. Expand HKEY_CURRENT_USER folder F. Expand Software folder G. rename the ESRI folder to ESRI_OLD H. Exit Regedit

if you're trying to rewrite that funcationality in a new single page application, thats a whole nother can of worms. in general you'll have to think about maintaining two seperate functions and use one to define parameters for the find task and another to geocode. in the parks and rec sample, they use a function called locate() to run the find task. Inside that function, if txtAddress is disabled, it fires the function GeoCodeAddress() instead.

But how to get those into HTML if I don't have object_ID? what do you mean, get them into HTML? are you attempting to consume the map service you've created using our JavaScript API? if so, you might try modifying one of our application samples (which loads the following REST service) all you have to do is point at the REST endpoint of your own service instead. Live changes to the data referenced in the map used for publishing should be reflected in the service (and client applications which consume it) automatically.

i saw your DM today, but the hosted service no longer seems to be up in arcgis.com. i tried working with the Rigs_All layer in the map service below, but i can't even get the feature layer to display. im not sure whats going on, but theres definitely something wrong with the extent in REST Extent: XMin: -151.631428 YMin: 5.6843418860808E-14 XMax: 5.6843418860808E-14 YMax: 70.2977660000001 Spatial Reference: 4326 http://services.arcgis.com/s94UJcOoEa23NHUs/ArcGIS/rest/services/Sales_Support_Map/FeatureServer/4

hi alan, our JavaScript api definitely supports dynamic rendering, but you may have your work cut out for you if you don't have an attribute field readily available to use as the basic for the renderer. http://help.arcgis.com/en/webapi/javascript/arcgis/help/jssamples/renderer_generate_renderer.html I don't see in any of the samples anyway to aggregate my data range information into a shapefile, say state/county/zip what do you mean by this?
