i don't think its actually crucial that you think creatively right out of the box. the internet is full of examples of people tearing something that already exists apart and rebuilding it themselves for educational purposes. i think you're on the right track in thinking about how something familiar could be extended or made more useful because it provides a concrete breaking off point for exploration.

Olivia, You're asking about building 'web apps from scratch' using the ArcGIS API for JavaScript, correct? If so, i think there's a path you could navigate that doesn't involve formal coursework. i wouldn't call it 'easy' but its the path i took and i've never regretted it. the key is to identify some clear and attainable early goals because starting anything new is frustrating and its important to maintain enthusiasm. i always had a lot more fun trying to answer other people's questions about the JSAPI when i worked in tech support and on GeoNet and Stack Overflow than i did creating elaborate projects of my own just for the sake of it, but that just may be a personal preference. either way the key to learning any 'big' new topic on your own is to break things up into enough discrete steps that your research and testing will be fruitful. this improves your own troubleshooting ability and makes it more likely that that the questions you inevitably start googling are small enough that other folks have asked them too.

besides the layers, are you sure the app itself has been shared with everyone?

i'll take a totally different tack in answering this question. my current work only shares the most remote connection to what i studied in school. i didn't attain additional degrees or certificates. i just looked for opportunities to develop new skills on the job by tackling projects in addition to my primary duties. obviously your mileage will vary with regard to the amount of flexibility and support you'd get at work attempting something like this, but my experience has been successful, primarily because i've been deliberate about identifying win/win scenarios which allowed me to expand my professional skills tackling problems that managers agreed were worth solving.

We're not actually curating content using groups like we have in the past. we could add you if we knew your username, but it wouldn't actually be too helpful.

you're definitely on the right track doing this MOOC! our ArcGIS DevLabs are really concise, useful and to the point as well. http://developers.arcgis.com/labs i'm also a big fan of trawling GeoNET and Stack Overflow to try and answer other people's questions. i think i've learned more trying to answer other people's questions than asking my own.

while you're sorting things out with your account, you could also sign into a free developer account from the desktop software as well. https://developers.arcgis.com/sign-up/

Hey Knowledge! I'm not sure what 'Building Plans' you're talking about. Perhaps the Local Government Plans and Drawings Solution? if so, the link i shared includes the software requirements. it uses either ArcGIS Online or ArcGIS Server and optionally ArcGIS Pro.

you have a bunch of different things going on. 1. // not var url: 'https://...'
var url = 'https://...' 2. its hard to tell because of your indentation, but you're also missing a curly brace and closing parenthesis after you add your L.geoJSON to the map. 3. besides that, 'layer.geometry' is undefined. so you can't use 'layer.geometry.coordinates[1]' to access the latitude and longitude you're looking for within the `onEachFeature` function. i'd recommend using a text editor with color highlighted syntax and tools to point out if each parenthesis and curly brace is closed (and where) to appropriately terminate functions. (like Sublime, VS Code or Notepad++). afterward you'll need to host your simple program using a local web server and open it in a browser. using the developer tools to set breakpoints and inspect variables is the only way you'll be able to learn exactly where things are going awry and make corrections quickly.

WGS84 coordinates are always: 180 > X > -180 (longitude) 90 > Y > -90 (latitude). Your feature collection looks to be mislabeled Web Mercator northings and eastings.

instead of fetching all the features from the service and filtering on the client, it's a better to only ask ArcGIS Online/Server for the features you want (using the where constructor option). L.esri.featureLayer({ url: "http://sampleserver6.arcgisonline.com/arcgis/rest/services/Census/MapServer/3", where: "STATE_NAME = 'Kansas'", }).addTo(map); Querying features | Esri Leaflet

you're asking too many different questions in a single geonet post. 1. instead of calling bindPopup(), you'll need to implement your own logic within featureLayer.on("mouseover") / featureLayer.on("mouseout") (example) 2. by default, the popup option autoPan is set to true. this should ensure that the popup is displayed even if the map has to be recentered. 3. check out the leaflet map constructor option maxBounds

based on what i read in Domains in ArcGIS Online, in order to preserve domains in a feature service, you need to publish without uploading the file geodatabase.

if you want to return all the features in the service, you need to supply a SQL where clause that always resolves to true. where: 1=1 http://sampleserver6.arcgisonline.com/arcgis/rest/services/Census/MapServer/3/query?where=1=1&f=html
