I don't think this is exactly what your looking for, but more of a process that I take to do projections on the fly. Yes, I use the ArcGIS online imagery (in a connected mobile environment). Yes, my data collection is using the same projection as the imagery. This allows me to create a mobile project and deploy it to devices. Natively the ArcGIS Mobile application won't read in the X and Y (Long/Lat) coordinates into fields. The problem with the Imgary is that the projection does not allow for Geometry Calculations in ArcMap. So what I do, is change the dataframe projection to something that will allow me to quickly calculate X and Y coordinates, it posts those changes to the database anyways and then close the mxd and do NOT save. So that how I modify projections and still keep the mobile project working fine. I hope this gives some insight as to how you may want to solve your problems. Thanks, Akhil P.

Ah if you had only told me this error earlier lol. Its quite simple. Open your mxd again. Your double click on your dataframe (likely to be called "Layers"). Click on the DataFrame tab > Under Extent of data in all layer (Default), click Other > click ok > click ok > Save your mxd. That's all you have to do in order ot make a mobile map service. Note: This may not seem important but this is the most important part of the creation of the mxd. Also make sure your extent is large enough to collect points (data) where ever you want. For example I used to have an extent just for Canada, but yet I had a feature class for the entire world. When I put points in Canada they worked, when I put point in areas outside of Canada like USA, Africa and etc, I would get an error. I hope this make it clear as to how the extent of the mxd is important. Thanks, Akhil P.

Uninstall ArcGIS Mobile? Uninstall everything related to ArcGIS Mobile 10, restart computer and then reinstall ArcGIS Mobile 10. Thats all I can think of.

I see that you have done some of the necessary steps in MPC but have a look at these things and see if you have missed anything. 1) After saving the .mxd > use ArcCatalog and right click on the .mxd to Publish to ArcGIS Server > put a checkmark in Mobile Data Access. 2) In MPC make sure you click on the Set Initial Map Extent icon > it is located on the map > this will likely allow you to save to the ArcGIS server. If you can provide some step by step procedure as to what you are doing, I can try and figure out if you have missed anything, provided the 2 things above don't work.

Hi, I have been comparing a Windows Mobile device (Trimble Nomad) and a Windows Vista Table PC (Trimble Yuma) with ArcGIS 10 Mobile and I found that the Windows Mobile device seems to crash occasionally. Whereas the Table PC does not crash often or at all. Please let me know of your experiences with both types of devices in terms of application stability and crashing. Thanks, Akhil P.

I dont have the code to do that, but I can suggest the solution I am doing if this helps. When you deploy your Mobile Application, have 2 fields, one for Lat and Long make them text fields. Once your field crew upload points to the Server, you can have someone at a computer using ArcMap, calculate Lat and Long in those fields, and then your field crew can download the data accordingly. If you are interested in doing it this way, let me know and I can help you out some more.

Hi buddha, I have successfully deployed out-of the-box solutions to both Mobile Devices (Trimble Nomad using Window Mobile 6 Pro) and Tablets (Trimble Yuma using Vista). For the Yuma, I just installed the ArcGIS Mobile, no SDK. Ran ArcGIS Mobile 10 and then I was able to connect to my ArcGIS server and download the created projects. I'm guessing you are having difficulties running ArcGIS Mobile 10 on a tablet because you may need the runtime? I don't beleive I installed it, but I am not sure. I will test again, on an another Yuma later this week and let you know.

Good job on doing this custom task! 🙂 The solution would be to delete or move the DLL file from the Extensions folder. Copy the assembly HelloworldTask.dll to the Windows Application bin folder or the application extensions folder: Location 1: <Install Dir>\ArcGIS\Mobile10.0\bin Location 2: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ESRI\ArcGIS Mobile\Extensions\ (for Windows XP:) C:\ProgramData\ESRI\ArcGIS Mobile\Extensions\ (for Windows Vista or 7) notice that the mobile installer does not create the extensions folder, you need to manually create this folder. Browse to the same place where you placed the DLL. Hope this helps.

I am not sure if this is the same problem, but I had problem installing ArcGIS Mobile 10. Possible Solution: 1) Install ArcGIS Mobile 10 on your computer (already done for most people). 2) Install MS Active Sync 4.5 or higher (provided you are using Windows XP) Otherwise get Mobile Device Center (or w/e it is called for Vista and Win7) 3) Run ArcGIS Mobile 10 on the computer 4) Then plug in your Mobile Device into the computer via USB and ArcGIS Mobile 10 will automatically install on the device. Note: I did it this way and I didn't have to install the runtime. 5) Run your application/project using ArcGIS Mobile 10. 6) Make sure you have installed the correct compact framework. I am using Compact Framework 2.0 Let me know if this helps.

I am not sure if you guys have worked with 9.3.1 and successfully created editable features, if not here are the instructions on successfully creating editable feature classes and should also work with a mobilecache. 1) Have a shapefile or many shapefiles that you want to use. 2) Right click on your database connection > Import > Single or Multiple (if they have same spatial reference) Single > Browse for the Shapefile > Give a name for output Feature Class Multiuple > Select all the Shapefiles > Then hit Ok (no need for naming, the geodatabse will take the shapefile names, unless the feature class/feature dataset already exists you will get an error because of the name). 3) Once your FeatureClass or Dataset set is imported into the geodatabase you can then modify the featureclass as you like. For example, click on the feature class > Preview > Table > Add Field > Name: Photo > Data Type: Raster or Blob. <- This is for adding a photo field, so you can add images to what you collect. 4) Then right click on the Feature Class or Data set and click on Add Global IDs, this will make your feature class editable. 5) Configure your domains and Subtypes. 6) Register as Versioned (might be optional) I just figured out today that if I don't Register as Versioned, the FeatureClass in ArcMap is more editable, meaning I can use Field Calculator and Calculate Geometry. Yet my featureclass is still properly versioned in ArcMap. Interesting! ;). But if you do register as versioned you will lose the abilities mentione above. Then proceed with creating your project in Mobile Project Center. Forgot to mention, you can still create a Mobile MapCache and these layers should also be editible when you properly configure it in Mobile Project Center (when you add Mobile Cache Data). Let me know if you have any problems.

Hi Akhil, Finding a developer summit video where someone mentions halfway through the video that you do photo streaming either via raster field or blob field with "picture_<fieldname>" is not documentation, it's garbage. Seriously, I'm supposed to "guess" that if I name a blob field "picture_<fieldname>" the app will automagically know it's a picture!??? LOL this is so true, but yes, I find that with ArcGIS Mobile 10 seems to be more like trial and error, and yes I also had to figure out the extent thing with the mxd and then setting a initial extent in Project Center. I have not found documentation about either, nor was I able to quickly find this information, all my developement with 10 has been trial and error. For some reason I feel like ESRI just makes us work extra hard to figure out such little things, it also appears they don't want to spoon feed us the answers? Even though some of these things are new features that we want to use, but just don't know how.

I think you have done all the right steps in order to save and load projects to and from other locations, than the default. When I make a project in MPC, and save it, I tend to save it to C:\<username>\ArcGIS_Mobile_Projects When I open that folder I will see many folders containing many projects I have created. Lets just say I created a new project called Sample_Project, when I save this to my location above, the following folder is created. P_Sample_Project within that there are many files, and then another folder for where the Cache will be (can be given any name). If you do see all this, then ArcGIS Mobile 10 should be able to see mobile projects located in this folder C:\<username>\ArcGIS_Mobile_Projects. If everything you have done is similar to what I said/did, then there maybe something else that is causing a problem.

Your welcome, I agree there needs to be a little more documentation on the new stuff that we as developers and consumers need. Fortunately in this case adding a photo is quite a simple task, in which there's not much needed in terms of documentation. I think I have figured out what Jay was trying to say in terms of the second option of creating a Photo field. Once you imported a shapefile into the Geodatabase (making it a Featureclass) > add a new field > name it Picture_<something> > then the field type "Blob". I have yet to try this, but hopefully it works for those who want to add more than one picture. Trust me, I spend a good amount of time trying to deploy a mobile project without success, and all the readings and videos I have watched did not show, how this is done for ArcGIS Mobile 10. PS: There is a video for deploying Out-of-the-box solutions for ArcGIS Mobile 9.3.1, but 10 is much different.
