Manoj If the client is doing planar calculations on this type of data/projection, the better practice might be to teach them to do geodesic calculations in ArcMap instead of trying to do inappropriate planar calculations on the Web Mercator web service. As John said, the measurements may be way off their true values if they client doesn't account for specific limitations of certain projection types. Heather, Thanks for the information. Actually I read this classic article you cited before doing the tests, but I don't see anything that can help explain the behavior that I see which can be summarized in short - if  one SDE1 that has two-way replications to two other SDEs, say, SDE2 and SDE3, sync changes from SDE1 to SDE2 will immediately see the same changes in SDE2, but then sync from SDE1 to SDE3 will not show the same changes in SDE3. All are in default session and are in the same arcmap session. Allen One interesting aspect you don't mention but probably have checked: does ArcGIS report any conflicts between SDE1 and SDE3? To synchronize, potential conflicts need reconciling, either automatically, or manually. Knowing if there are any conflicts, may help explain the behaviour (if you haven't run into some sort of bug). Hi, found the solution to my issue! The problem was the database name. Your are not allowed to use mixed capital and lower letters or underscores in the name of your database. For example it is not allowed to call the database "myTestDb". ... Hope this issue will be resolved with the next service pack for ArcGIS 10.1. Can't help you in detail with this, but I did notice you didn't mention reconciling and posting during synchronization, and whether you do a manual or automatic conflict resolution. If the changes aren't reconciled and posted, the synchronization version will persist next to the actual replication version, see: Synchronization and versioning I really also recommend reading and printing out any other Help pages regarding replication and synchronization, it simply can be a mind boggling subject as soon as you start using more than two databases in a replication setup, like you do. ... From further investigation I believe the client connects using a DLL and then goes into the SQL database through the DBMS OLE. Is bottlenecking still going to occur when hundreds, possibly thousands of clients are accessing the databases through this OLE? Apologies if the question seems ill-informed, I am not a DB administrator so just trying to get my head around all the jargon! Dale, you may find these Help articles a useful read. The tests are made using the Direct Connect with Oracle 11g client installed on the client computer. I wonder if the same issue happens with a 3-tier ArcSDE Server install... Those API are great at what they do, but as for using them to manage data in a RDBMS sounds like taking an airplane when you can actually bike to work 😉 Well, depends, the ride with the bike may turn out cycling through a giant labyrinth and getting lost if you attempted to manage and maintain the full ESRI geodatabase functionality as well (like versioning, topology, geometric networks, Feature Dataset/Class hierarchy) without using these ESRI API's... :eek: Better to catch the plain to get there in a straight line 😉 ... Unfortunatly, to copy/paste a raster within the same Database ArcCatalog needs to read the file through the network on the client machine and send it back to the server. I agree that it would be much faster if ArcCatalog could acheive the same task only on the server. Do you have a Direct Connect install with Oracle Client installed on your local ArcGIS client computer, or do you run an ArcSDE/ArcGIS Server service on a server? Even better, it would be nice if ESRI could release an SQL API to manage spatial features from the RDBMS. But I'm going away from the question here... A simple copy/paste of a raster stored as a BLOB into an SDO_GeoRaster type make ArcCatalogue to freeze indefinitely (more than 1h) doing nothing. No error message. Although you are likely to have hit that particular Oracle bug in the link, there still remains the question whether the process really failed. The copy and paste is probably mostly a server task, so seeing ArcCatalog idle on a local machine, is no clear indication the process really failed, it may just take an excessive amount of time to process the raster copy operation on the Oracle server. The fact you don't receive any error message in ArcCatalog, may also be a small indication the process is actually continuing in the background. Since raster datasets can be extremely big, operations on them can be time consuming, depending on the operation. Have you made absolutely sure there is no activity related to the copy & paste on the server? Oracle probably provides you with enough tools and logging to get a better idea of what is going on on the server. Sad to see Oracle refusing to tackle such an important issue and demanding a "customer business case" before even starting a move towards a solution. ... View more

Hi Robert, I don't have 10.1 yet and no ArcSDE available, but looking at this 10.1 Help topic: What's new for raster and image data in ArcGIS 10.1 I started wondering what type of raster data you are using? Is it classified and visible in ArcCatalog as the new "Raster product" data type, e.g. Landsat imagery with a Multispectral layer. The Help is not so clear here, but there seems to be an indication of possible extra raster viewing layers being created: "... A raster product is a raster dataset that uses metadata and header information to pre-create a raster layer from the raw data. ... Instead, they contain one or more derived raster datasets, such as a multispectral or pan-sharpened product, depending on the metadata and available bands. ..." If these derived layers are indeed not being created "on-the-fly" but pre-created and stored like for example raster pyramids, it would definitely explain a possible serious increase in storage requirements compared to previous versions of ArcSDE raster data storage. Lastly, when, at what version, did ArcGIS introduce the "Overview" with mosaics...? Besides pyramids, these could add to raster storage too. ... View more
