You might be able to use an SOI, but they go way above my head. I've never actually worked with them before. https://enterprise.arcgis.com/en/server/latest/develop/linux/about-extending-services.htm "Layer-level access control for map services—ArcGIS Server only supports service-level data access; either a user has full access to all service data or the user has no access. A series of SOIs can be implemented to filter access to specific layers or even filter data within a layer based on the user's role."

YES!! I agree 100% with this idea. I created an idea to resolve a side effect of this issue. Even if you change ownership to the person republishing it, if they are not members of the group the item is a part in (even if you are an administrator), it unshares the item from the group when republishing. It's very annoying. https://community.esri.com/t5/arcgis-pro-ideas/do-not-un-share-feature-services-when-re-publishing-in-arcgis/idi-p/928150

I am in a similar situation where we are deploying ArcGIS Enterprise in AWS for the first time. First of all, it possible that ArcGIS Enterprise could have been deployed using an AWS AMI as well. At the software level within the VM, I am not sure if there are any differences between the AMI and CloudFormation. Using the AMI, we experienced the same things. Nothing (except ArcGIS Server) was running and all of the services had to be turned on. To answer your question about GeoEvent Server, that service is deployed in every instance when using the AMIs. Regarding the steps you listed, you essentially need to follow the ArcGIS Enterprise base deployment installation steps to get started. The only difference is that all of the software has been installed, just not configured. The ports have also been opened in Windows Firewall, but you'll also need to make sure they are open within AWS as well. To setup your ArcGIS Enterprise, you will need to create your server and portal site and configure your web adaptors. You are definitely on the right track with the steps you listed. You will need to: Configure Portal (create Portal) Configure Portal web adaptor Configure Server (create server site) Configure server web adaptor You didn't mention Data Store, but you can configure that as well. Obviously, there could potentially be a lot more steps depending on your deployment needs, but that's a good starting point. Also, don't forget to set your services to start automatically (such as Portal, Server, etc.). Otherwise, if you have a machine restart, it won't start those services automatically. Regarding licensing, I believe Esri follows the bring your own license model. So a CloudFormation/AMI will NOT have any licensing. You will need to contact your Esri account representative to obtain licensing information. There isn't any special AWS licensing or anything. The licensing is the same whether or not you use it on-premise or in the cloud. Unfortunately, Esri's documentation regarding AWS AMIs/CloudFormation is very......lacking. I understand that Esri can't necessarily provide documentation regarding AWS configuration, but it would be nice to have some documentation regarding the VMs itself. Such as, what is already pre-configured? What is turned on/off by default? I had to figure everything out on my own. Anyway, I hope that helps! I think what you are experiencing is "normal." You just need to continue with the configuration as if you were doing an on-premise deployment.

Thank you for your response! I was actually reading another article that was talking about increasing the RAM allocation. I've done a lot of testing, and initially, the geofences were failing without any error when I asked this question. But after simplifying the geometry and trying to re-import them again, it actually was able to import several thousand before failing, and the GeoEvent server logs stated that it ran out of memory. The initial failing without any error messages is what caught me off guard, but I realize that it was probably way too big and complex for it to even try to import any and provide any useful messages. Thank you!

I have a fairly large table (350,000 records) that contains polygons that I would like to use for my geofences in Geovent Server. I published this as feature service so Geoevent Server can read it. The feature service works fine. However, I cannot import these records as a geofence in Geoevent Server. It just loads for about 10 minutes (pictured below), then the box disappears and it acts as if there are no geofences. There are not any error messages or anything useful in the logs. I am able to get it to work with a small number of records, but not with a large amount of records. Is there a limit to the number of geofences I can have in Geoevent Server? My resource usage on the server is fine, CPU doesn't get above 25% and RAM usage is less than 50%.

We actually encountered this issue yesterday. It turns out, the shape column had a NOT NULL constraint on it. It must be configured to allow nulls. Unfortunately, Esri's 999999 error message did not specify which column it was referring to, so we had to go down the rabbit hole of figuring that one out. I also can't find any Esri documentation that states that this is a requirement of the shape field. Another failure of Esri's documentation. Esri, if you are going to provide an error message, please provide documentation on how to fix it. I'd also recommend not giving general 999999 error message when the error message clearly lists a specific error. It's not a general error if the error message knows what the problem is.

I've been looking for the same thing and I found this. It has the potential to be promising. It doesn't exactly pre-populate answers, but it will pre-populate dropdown lists. I'm not sure if that could be extended to what you need or not though. https://community.esri.com/t5/arcgis-survey123-questions/dynamic-dropdown-list/m-p/856540

I agree. If Esri claims they are going to support a product, then there needs to be full documentation parity between all platforms. Don't leave your Linux users out to dry.

I am proposing that all Esri ArcGIS Enterprise Technical Support articles/documentation regarding common issues in Windows also have a corresponding article/documentation for Linux if the issue exists in both Windows and Linux environments. For example, the issue described in this Esri Technical Support article (https://support.esri.com/en/technical-article/000012007) is valid for both Windows and Linux. However, the article only references Windows environments. I experienced this issue yesterday in a Linux environment, yet the only documentation that exists for this issue is for Windows. We had to do a lot of searching around to find the file in a Linux environment. If an issue for any Esri product is possible to exist in both Windows and Linux, then the article should have troubleshooting steps for both environments, not just Windows by default. The link I posted above is just a single example, but it is a common issue. I realize most organizations probably choose Windows to deploy ArcGIS Enterprise, but if Esri is going to support Linux, then Esri's Technical Support articles should have troubleshooting steps for both Windows and Linux environments if the issue the article is describing exists in both environments. The article shouldn't be in Windows by default, with Linux users left to troubleshoot the issue on their own.

This Esri documentation lists the steps in the correct order when upgrading ArcGIS Enterprise. https://enterprise.arcgis.com/en/server/latest/deploy/windows/upgrade-arcgis-server.htm When you upgraded ArcGIS Server, did the server manager open in a web page asking you to continue the upgrade?

I'm not a DBA, so I'm not exactly sure what all extra had to be done. I do know that the user account used to publish feature services to server did not have permission to access the databases, so that had to be fixed. But I'm not sure about the details. I just know that I didn't have to update any connections or anything like that within Esri.

We recently had a scenario where a database server failed. We had to spin up a new server VM with the same name and restore all of the databases from a backup onto that VM. Since the VM server name stayed the same, we didn't have to change any of the connections within Esri. I'm not sure if that answers your questions, but that is the situation we experienced when our server crashed.
