Great discussion here, and I agree with @gis_KIWI4 . Have some initial discussions, but table making any changes until you've had a chance to use the system for 6 months. Once you've had a chance to flush out all the items you want to add/improve in your model, you can then come up with a plan for a) how to model/configure it and b) how to change the business processes to ensure that the GIS is getting enough information to create and maintain this information. If you want to get to the level of detail that is required here you will need to start looking at very detailed vault/conduit drawings to get the information on the GIS. Does your organization have this information? Is it all accurate and actively maintained every time something changes? How will reviewing this information impact your workload, will you need to hire another mapper to keep up with demand? You will also need to ensure that every time a cable is pulled or replaced (or new construction happens) that the vault/conduit drawings AND the GIS get updated.

Technically there is no result option that allows you to return only the starting points. But one of those options allows you to differentiate between only returning barrier features or returning all the results of a particular trace.

You'll run into similar issues with file geodatabases when they're not full synced, but typically instead of the entire database showing up as immediately broken on the catalog pane it will wait until you try and open it to fail.

Upgrading the utility network is an operation performed on the entire dataset that affects all rows, across all versions. You can find details about this process in the Utility network upgrade history topic in the ArcGIS Online Help: Utility network upgrade history—ArcGIS Pro | Documentation. You can find any special instructions and considerations for each upgrade on that page.

@GaneshPremakumar if the two subnetworks are different, then they cannot be connected to each other. You'll need to find out why they are connected and correct your data so they are no longer connected. In the case of a gravity-based systems you may need to set up directional manhole channels or identify which pipes are only used in overflow scenarios. In the above scenario the manhole where the flow diverges needs to be a directional manhole channel that defines which pipes are upstream, downstream, and which pipes have mutually exclusive flow. I discuss some techniques for troubleshooting tracing issues in gravity systems here: Stormwater Network Data Quality Assurance. The article is written for stormwater, but is readily applicable to most gravity systems. Remember that even while you're working on getting your subnetworks dialed in, you can still use the digitize direction trace to do upstream/downstream tracing.

You can accomplish this by giving the two subnetwork controllers the same subnetwork name. While you can do this with any subnetwork, the most common workflows are below: In a stormwater system, an entire neighborhood may have a single watershed that can be discharged through several different outfalls. Each outfall would have a unique subnetwork controller name, but they all would have the name of the watershed as their subnetwork name. Pressure zones (gas or water) usually have multiple pressure regulating devices that help sustain and regulate pressure within an area. Each of these devices has its own unique name, but they all share the name of the pressure zone they are regulating.

This can be configured using the Versions setting in the Field Maps app. If you are using Experience Builder you can control this using the Branch Version widget. If you are creating your own custom JavaScript or runtime web app this is also possible but obviously requires customization. The service itself cannot be locked to a specific version, but some applications allow you to lock a user into a specific version in the service.

Save Edits - This statement only applies if you are running upgrade dataset against a local mobile/file geodatabase and have unsaved edits in Pro. In the case of an enterprise geodatabase, you have already disconnected active connections and turned off your services, so it should not be possible to have unsaved edits. Versions - Upgrade Dataset can be performed on a utility network dataset in a branch versioned geodatabase that has outstanding user versions with unposted edits without causing any data to be lost. It is only the act of Unregistering a dataset as versioned that will cause historical information and unposted versions to be loss.

The only other catch to using the Subnetwork Name field for you is that you must run Update Subnetwork for it to be populated. Customers who have hierarchical models (pipeline, water, sewer) have multiple subnetwork name fields (system, pressure, etc) so they need to pick which field (which corresponds to a tier) they want to use.

You'll see this pattern in the latest foundation model for electric. Because partitioned networks require directional terminal configurations, asset types that can act as controllers will have a directional terminal configuration. But the non-controller versions of these devices have a different asset type that has a bi-directional terminal configuration (circuit breaker, HV Load Break switches/fuses, reclosers).
