You should also include the featuredataset's name in the path, if there is one.

I'd go with whatever shows up in the Location: box in arccatalog when you have it selected in the treeview, which would be C:\Temp\WellData.gdb\Wells

I recommend leveraging your art skills, and getting into mobile. IMO, Silverlight/WPF mastery would be a good way to do that. You can download Expression Studio 60 day eval. Use your art skills to make some compelling map symbols. http://www.microsoft.com/expression/ Of course there's ESRI's free Silverlight/WPF SDK. http://resources.esri.com/arcgisserver/apis/silverlight/index.cfm?fa=codeGalleryDetails&scriptID=16504 Also the free Windows Phone 7 SDK, (which supports silverlight). http://developer.windowsphone.com/ Also should get into Visual Studio 2010. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/vstudio/default.aspx

I'm also curious about this. I tried IDataLayer2.Disconnect in 9.2 or so. It didn't work, but maybe something has changed so might be worth trying.

Using a thin client I'd like to be able connect to a service where I can author geoprocessing tools using a modelbuilder-like GUI. The datasets hosted on the server would be available for me to include as inputs. For example, a site like the National Map would let me write models that run against all the data on their site. When I publish my model, I would set a price. When the user runs it they would be charged for data use, i/o, cpu - and for use of my model.

With the demise of VBA, I'd like to see a new IDE offered that allows me to edit code (VB.NET or C#) that travels with the mxd. It would compile and run within the same process as arcmap/arccatalog.

Why do you want to use COM? Seems like an AGX extension could be written that does interprocess communication via WCF or sockets. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/fx6588te.aspx http://resources.esri.com/help/1200/arcgisexplorer/conceptualhelp/index.html#/application_namespace_overview/000200000036000000/

I'd take a look at the System.Diagnostics.Process.Start static method, that way you wouldn't have to hardwire for a particular browser. http://dotnetperls.com/process-start-examples-vbnet
