Andrew: Thanks for the response. I haven't run any Developer tools in Firefox (I would need a pointer on how to try that, but I can try launching them to see what happens - I'm not a developer so I have never had a reason to use those). I never thought about the certificate though. Our IT department took care of that, so that might be a good place for me to start. I will certainly initiate that conversation with them right now and reply again. The version of of Portal (and ArcGIS for Server) is 4.1. We only just implemented everything is July. The version of Firefox I'm running is 48.0.

I have created my first Collector app, and it does work well....BUT....I'm wondering if I can use this app to simply update existing features, rather than add a brand new point every time. We have a need to inspect culverts and stormwater discharge points, and this spatial data has already been collected and is currently in our geodatabase. All we need to do is visit those points and update the database with a fresh inspection once or twice a year. I have created an app but so far all it does is register a point and we can then update that database at that time...but we really don't need this much capability. My question then is, "can we simply use Collector to navigate to our stormceptor points and then update those existing tables? How does one do this using Collector? Is there a "how 2" guide somewhere that explains how to set up and use Collector in this manner? Thanks.

I have always been confused by this, but have never really sought an explanation. Would anyone out there have an idea of why I can publish map services to Portal and can then visualize and interact with those map products using EI and Chrome, but when I use Firefox only my basemap loads, and none of my layers? At first I thought it was my machine, so I didn't think anything of it, but we are only just implementing our web based GIS and now we are getting more interest and users. However, it turns out that it's not just my machine as I set up a co-worker to experiment with our new web application and he too was unable to load any of the layers using Firefox, but with EI and Chrome it was fine. Is there a known problem with Firefox? I would find this odd because with ArcGIS Online Firefox works best in our office...and Chrome was the browser with issues. Thanks

Using ArcGIS 4.1, and ArcGIS for Server 4.1, I'm trying to publish one of our historical orthophotos as a map service, and in the off-hours I will be caching this to use in our web application. I go through all of the exact steps that I followed when I published our current orthophoto 2 weeks ago. I have also registered the folders where my data is stored in ArcGIS Server Manager -- Site -- Data Store. Folder permissions were set weeks ago when we first implemented ArcGIS for Server. Am I supposed to perhaps set ArcGIS for Server permissions on the folder as well? Not sure how to do that though. The problem I'm having is when I analyze my map service prior to publishing I get the inevitable: "Layer's data source is not registered with the server...." High Severity warning. However, when I right-click to "Register Data Source With Server", and I use a UNC path, I get the warning: "Folder is already registered with the server....", and when I use the standard Windows path, I get the warning/error: Machine: "....The data item is inaccessible". I have also tried publishing the image through ArcCatalog....same results. I don't understand this because 2 weeks ago I managed to publish and cache our main orthophoto using the exact same steps I'm using now with no error messages or Analyzer warnings. Can anyone suggest what I might be doing wrong here? Surely I must be missing at least one crucial step?! Thanks

Jayanta (and Dan): That legend tip about turning the legend to graphics and then "ungrouping" Seems to be the best way to go. It's only 2 extra steps so it's pretty painless. I never thought of this method (indeed, I didn't even know it was an option) so thank you guys for pointing that out...you saved me a bunch of tedious work :-).

Dan: Thanks for your response...it is appreciated. Unfortunately it appears that one cannot change this anomaly through the Legend Wizard. In fact, the problem doesn't even show up there. All I see in the wizard are the feature class/layer names just like one is supposed to see; however, as soon as you complete building the legend that ridiculous Representation: <Layer Name> appears. It's very frustrating

I just finished creating a series of File Geodatabase feature classes for inclusion into our new enterprise geodatabase next week. This data will also be used by other GIS staff who need to quickly make a map. However (and I wish I had checked this in a map first) when I add a legend in ArcMap using a feature class with Representations, I don't just get the name of the feature class...I also get the name of the representation. For example, I have a series of points in a feature class called "Depth Profiles", but the world "Representations: Depth Profiles" also appears in the legend. This is very annoying because the end user is never going to care whether your map is made using Representations in a File Geodatabase or not. There is a way to remove it, but who wants to go through 4-5 additional steps just to clean up your legend every time you add a layer with Representations to your map? That too would be very annoying. Is there a quick way to use Representations and not have the name of the representation appear in the legend when one makes a map? I'm starting to fear that I'm going to have to revisit every File Geodatabase I have created in the past few days and delete all of my Representations. As it stands, why would any one use representations if you can't turn that annoying characteristic off? It just as long symbolise one's map the old-fashioned way each time as it does to remove the representation name from one's legend . Thanks.

Rebecca: Thanks a million for this...this is exactly the direction in which I needed to be steered. I searched for this problem online but just could not find anything, and you not only found examples, but exact examples. This definitely explains my issue. I knew what the checkerboard problem entailed, I just could not figure out how one could get the checkerboard with Overviews only at specific scales. That baffled me, and as a result I was was looking for solutions in all of the wrong places. The discussions to which you linked me definitely have the solution though, so now I have something I can work toward resolving today :-). Thanks again

I'm using ArcGIS 10.4, and have created a mosaic of about 190 TIFF images. The settings I used are simply building a mosaic, pyramids set to -1, Update Overviews selected, Calculate Statistics turned on, and no compression. The image extents will fit on one screen at about 1:80,000 scale. The final output looks great, and the resolution is sharp. However, when I zoom the scale in past 1:5,000, the image then fails to draw, and I get a screen filled with that dreaded checker board pattern. When I zoom back out the image returns once I pass that 1:5,000 scale threshold. I have not seen any question like this anywhere online, so I thought I would once again turn to the brains here to see what they think. Would anyone out there know what is causing this, and how it can be rectified, or prevented in the future? I do not have scale range turned on, and all of the symbology is simply using the default settings. In fact, I have experimented with various stretch settings under the Symbology tab and none have any affect. Thanks.

I am in the process of saving symbology as Representations in some of our more frequently used file geodatabase layers. However, for one or two of these layers I normally have transparency turned on (which works well in a .LYR file), but I cannot for the life of me seem to get this to work in a Representation. Before I spin my wheels and waste too much time...is it possible to save a transparency in a Representation? I cannot seem to find anything on this topic online, so I thought I would come to the experts . Thanks.

Stephen: I realise it has been over 4 years since this post, but this certainly solved my issue. I was so worried because the image on which I had been working (for over 8 hours) had resulted in a stretched version. I was thinking that I may have to restart my entire mosaic. Thankfully, this saved me hours of work :-).

I remember working with Regions too. Wasn't Arcview 3.x also using Regions? I remember that was our big challenge when moving data from Arcview 3.x into ArcInfo...something of which was resolved with an AML . That's interesting that you were able to apply the old coverage functionality to the feature class. I may have to visit this myself to see how it can apply. Sounds like a great way to visualize the topology in ArcGIS 10.x.
