Too funny...I remember using Librarian. It worked fairly well too. If I remember correctly that all went away when ESRI moved into ArcSDE.

Thanks Chris...this will be an interesting read for sure. Based on what your initial explanation it appears that the geodatabase model is using the same concept as the coverage model, but it is much faster and less taxing because it doesn't permanently store any information. I'm just double-checking because I'm currently teaching GIS and this topic came up in my lecture material, so I just wanted to make sure that it is still relevant information to convey. Thanks again

In the earlier ArcInfo days, when data was managed as coverages, topology was managed through a series of tables. There was a polygon attribute table (PAT) that stored specific information about the spatial relationships of each polygon, an arc attribute table (AAT) that stored specific information about each arc/line, either for linear features or the features that made up each polygon, and a node attribute table (NAT) that stored specific spatial information about where lines would begin and terminate. There was also a point attribute table (PAT) that contained specific spatial relationship information about point features. However, now that we're in an ESRI world of geodatabases, how is this topology managed now? Are there perhaps still PAT's, AAT's and NAT's, but they are now in different formats that we can no longer see and access? Can anyone explain how the ArcGIS geodatabase model (file or personal) keeps track of the spatial relationships in each polygon, arc and node? Is it technically the same as before, and if not, how has this changed? Thanks

Stuart: Thanks for the detailed response...it is both appreciated and helpful. I think you're absolutely right too...no need to install the ArcGIS License Manager. I think the ESRI instructions will have to be rewritten though...those instructions stipulate that the first thing to download after your account has been activated is the ArcGIS License Manager. But after I installed ArcGIS Desktop it prompted me to select a license and to authorize it too, and was always confused with the redundancy. So I guess what we will do now is deauthorize the ArcGIS License through the License manager, then uninstall that application altogether, and then reauthorize the ArcGIS license using the ArcGIS Administrator application. Hopefully that will clear up any issues that we have been experiencing. Thanks again

Dan: Yes. We actually went through this process a few times and double-checked as much as I could. The only thing I can think of that might be a reason is a corrupted ArcGIS install...so we redownloaded and reinstalled, but with the same results. Very baffling. Mark L. We have purchased the "Getting to Know ArcGIS for Desktop" book, and have successfully registered an account with ESRI.com. We then successfully installed the License Manager, and authorized our student license using the Authorization Code found at the back of the book. We also successfully authorized the ArcGIS license through the ArcGIS Administrator application. However, when we launch either ArcMap or ArcCatalog, the launch is interrupted with the error message: ArcGIS Desktop Advanced is not authorized for use. Access the ArcGIS Administrator. Click on the product folder on the left (e.g. Desktop), then select the Single Use product you will be using and click the Authorized Now button. If you have already received an authorization file from ESRI, choose the third option 'I have received an authorization file from ESRI and am now ready to finish the authorization process'. So now when we try to double-check and rerun the License Manager Authorization process we now get the error message: Authorization denied because request would have exceeded max copies for the following authorization number(s). So what is up with this? We successfully installed the program, and successfully completed the authorization process, but now the software will not launch with a very confusing error message. Has anyone had this experience before? Thanks

This is a purely a visual exercise, but I want to experiment with a correctly georeferenced GRID ortho. I have created DTM's from converted USGS DEM data (into GRID) in the past, and then created some pretty impressive hillshades from those. However, I have never had much success just draping an orthophoto over a hillshade and always thought that creating a hillshade type DTM directly from the orthophoto would be best...except the photo usually doesn't come with required embedded elevation data (like the original DEM file) to be able to model elevation. So I am just considering converting the TIFF into GRID, which will then allow me to add the elevation data to the new GRID by employing a raster overlay (i.e. by adding the elevation data to each pixel), and then creating a new DTM using just the new photo image by itself. It's really more of an experiment to see if it can be done...and if not, then it's one more lesson learned :-). However, I will experiment with your suggestion first to see how well it works with ArcGIS 10.3. Thanks

Thanks Darren. To be honest I have never tried this before...I just assumed that the overlay required elevation data to be properly draped over a DTM. I will experiment with this further to see what it can do. If I can't get it to work I can always revert to creating a GRID DTM using the photo etc. It sounds like I have multiple options. Helpful suggestions here for sure....thank you.

I'm curious to learn if it's possible to convert a TIFF (i.e. an orthophoto or satellite image) into ESRI GRID format? What I would like to perhaps try and do is overlay the resulting image GRID file with an elevation GRID data set, and then create a DTM from the orthophoto-GRID/elevation overlay? Is this possible? Thanks

Kyle: Thanks a million...I never would have guessed that option. I seem to have issues with different browsers too (my layer still does not seem to save in Firefox, in Chrome it won't save the icon I selected, but will use a generic image, but I was able to get it to save properly in IE). At least we can continue demonstrating our GIS based web-mapping capability, so for that I'm grateful. I will now have to explore why I cannot seem to get total functionality with the other web browsers. It must be a setting, or perhaps the search engine I'm using (Google) is interfering with it somehow. That's a topic for another discussion though Thanks again

I'm pretty sure this has been discussed before but the solution I read then doesn't seem to work now. I have a layer in ArcGIS Online that I have symbolized using an image/icon found elsewhere online. When I symbolize the layer I simply select "Use An Image", and paste the path to that image, select OK, OK, Done, and then save my changes. I can view the layer with that symbology at that point; however, after I log off, and then log back in the changes are not saved. I cannot seem to save this symbol for this layer, regardless of how many times I select "SAVE". In the past one solution was to copy the icon/symbol image to the ArcGIS Online server/cloud, in the same folder as where the map that contains that one layer resides. At first this seemed to work, but now it longer does. This is particularly frustrating because we are trying to demonstrate the GIS capabilities to many users in our office and the last two demos have failed because the symbology just does not draw (and it's an important layer for our business too). Ideas?

It took a short while to get the exact syntax sorted out....but I did get it to work. This will really help when plotting a lot of these on a map. With this ability to "tweak" the labels it makes it so much easier to fit them into a small space while maintaining cartographic integrity. The syntax that ended up working is: "<LIN leading = '-3'>" & [Field1] & "" &vbnewline& "" & [Field2] & "" &vbnewline& "" & [Field3] & " " & [Field4] & " " & [Field5] & "</LIN>" Within the Maplex Label Manager I also selected the "Stack Label" option. Thanks again for your help.

Tobias: Thanks very much for the tip. I haven't heard of this method before and had to look it up after you pointed it out. I think you're absolutely right...this will be my solution. I will give this a try as soon as I get back to my workstation in the morning. Thanks again.

I have created a stacked label using ESRI Maplex. However, I would like to reduce the spaces between the lines of this stacked label to save on space. Is this possible? Below is an example of what I'm asking.
