Hi Ted, There is no option for creating OLE DB connections through Python. We do have a create ArcSDE connection file tool at 10. Also, here is a link to an ArcObjects sample that will create an ArcSDE connection file at 9.3/10. Attached is a toolbox containing two custom script tools that I wrote a little while ago. The first one will register a spatial table with SDE and then with the geodatabase. The second will register a regular table with SDE and then with the geodatabase. I have hardcoded a number of options either through the script itself or through the tool dialog. What about hiding the ArcSDE schema from other users on the instance? At 9.3.1, write privileges (I,U,D) are granted to PUBLIC for GDB_ tables. Read privs are given to most or all tables in the SDE schema. And execute is granted to PUBLIC for all packages and procedures in the SDE schema. Holly, ArcObjects will give you a little bit more efficiency in the ability to copy data and map to new fields at the same time. Without going into too much detail a possible geoprocessing workflow would be to use the feature class to feature class tool to set up your field mapping and copy to a new dataset, you could then use delete rows/delete features to 'clean up' the existing dataset, finally you could use copy features/copy rows to copy the data created from the feature class to feature class tool into the geodatabase. Yes, if it is required that you must use Windows authentication and are not able to grant DBO privileges to your geodatabase administrators then that method will work. If your requirement for Windows authentication is flexible, a slightly easier option is to use mixed mode authentication with an SDE schema that uses database authentication and have all users other than SDE use Windows authentication. ... Jerry, You created a DBO schema geodatabase instead of an SDE schema geodatabase. The main difference between these two options is it determines who is the geodatabase administrator. If you are working with a DBO schema geodatabase you do not need to use mixed authentication as the DBO user is likely authenticated through windows. The DBO user will be able to perform all of the geodatabase administrative tasks that the SDE user would perform in an SDE schema geodatabase. When using the DBO schema geodatabase there is no need create an SDE user. Unless you want to use database authentication there is no need to enable mixed mode authentication.
