In a grid map in Layout view with data driven pages enabled, I added dynamic text to show the grid number of grid squares adjoining the square that has the focus (i.e., GridNumber_S. GridNumber_E, etc). This works fine until a square is at the end of a row or column, where ther is no adjoing square on that side. Then the text displays '[empty]'. Short of adding empty spaces to all the empty fields to trick the dynamic text engine, is there a way to only display the text if there's text in the field? A simple If statement would do the job, but I don't see anywhere to do this. Thanks.

I don't know the answer to all your questions, but you can add fields to the Local Government Model schema without harming anything. Deleting or changing the default fields may cause functionality problems if you use ESRI's maps and apps. That's probably a 'depends' situation.

There are a lot of resources on the forums and in the resource center, but you're right, they tend to be somewhat scattered rather than centralized. The main advantage to a parcel fabric I see is that it takes care of topology - move one boundary, and corresponding and/or related boundaries adjust as well. There might be other advantages as well, but I'm pretty new to it myself. The Land Records part of the Local Government Model (LGM), which uses a parcel fabric in a particular geodatabase schema, allows you to use a variety of predefined maps, workflows and applications that ESRI has designed. You don't have to adopt the whole LGM if you don't want, but it's designed to integrate between functions - land records, public safety, public works, etc. - if you do. You can use a parcel fabric without the LGM, but it can save you some work. As far as different parcel types, those are taken care of by geodatabase domains, in the LGM anyway. So while you have one parcel fabric, there's a field called Type that uses a domain to differentiate between lots, tax parcels, subdivisions, etc. The hardest part, in my experience, is cleaning up the data to get it ready to load into the fabric. A good start is this white paper. HTH.

In this case, we're talking about the map and app gallery application specifically. It uses an ArcGIS Online group to catalog the content and present it in a gallery. The actually applications can be deployed locally using ArcGIS Server and Desktop on premise. But if you want to use the gallery application, you'll catalog those on premise apps in an ArcGIS Online group (via URL) and then share them with the Map and App Gallery. You can find more information about this workflow in the Online Help system. Ah, thanks, didn't realize there was a separate app to display maps gallery style. I was thinking maps in the Gallery on the Resource Center. Was confused by the similar names. So there's a Maps & Apps Gallery app in ESRI's Maps & Apps Gallery, but that app is ArcGIS Online only, as opposed to the other maps and apps which can be hosted locally. Now if I could figure out who's on first and what's on third? 🙂 I know the Tigers will be there this week, rounding the plate for home.

Just want to add a bit of clarity. Other parts of the ArcGIS for Local Government solution do not require ArcGIS Online, but in this case, the Maps and Apps Gallery does require ArcGIS Online. The Gallery leverages an ArcGIS Online Group to catalog the items and store comments submitted by users. Please refer to the help document for more information. I thought everything could be deployed locally. Maybe I'm not sure what you or Alan are referring to, but I'd swear all the various events I've attended or info I've read stated that.

Yes, you can use the Local Government maps & apps on your own server. Just download the LGM schema and import your data into that, then you can use the maps & apps locally. Obviously, ESRI would like you to use ArcGIS Online, but it's not required. A good intro, where this question is covered, can be found here. There are basically three deployment scenarios: 1) use LGM with ArcGIS online (saves you server management tasks), 2) use locally, both editing (desktop and/or web) and host web maps, and 3) take the maps & apps and modify the parts you want for your own needs (if you don't want to replace existing systems). ESRI provides support for 1 and 2, but not 3. The hardest part, in my experience, is importing existing data into the LGM. For parcel data, getting data ready can be a tedious task, but only has to be done once. Other data may be easier. The Resource Center has lots of info, videos, examples, etc. Sorry if I sound like an ESRI sales rep, this stuff has just been drilled into me in several workshops and webinars

Here's the tool I was thinking of. States it's for 9.2, but I've used it in 10.0. Not sure if it works in one layer or only two. You could always add the point layer twice. It creates lines from every point to every other point.

I think I saw this done in one of ESRI's GIS Tutorial books, but it might have been a third party tool. I'll look when I get home. Want to say it was called a spider something tool, but not sure.

I was playing around with geocoding and address locators because I hadn't used them in a while. I added a couple labelled points from the geocoding toolbar. But now, I can't figure out how to get rid of them. They don't appear as a layer anywhere, and can't be selected. How can I delete these? Thanks.

With historic data with no readily apparent ties, you just do the best you can. Sometimes you can work your way out from an existing known good point, but you can end up having to adjust a lot of boundaries. Even then they may not match because of the quality and accuracy of the historic data. Another issue is whether you know if any changes were made since the old date - ROWs, easements, replats, etc. It can be hard to find this data, can also take a while. The parcel fabric in the ESRI Local Government Model has an editing option to push boundaries to a historic layer when modifying or creating new ones, but that wouldn't help if you don't already have them in.

Thanks Kevin, Vince. The basic scenario right now is that the county needs any new, updated or deleted city street and city boundary data, but they don't want all the data every time, just changes. They'd get this data weekly, possibly monthly. It shouldn't be a whole lot of data. We want the process to be as simple and quick as possible on our end. Using ArcGIS to edit. Not familiar with replication, will look into it. I was thinking that just sending the delta tables would work, but then again, not really familiar with them in detail either.

Thanks Joe. I can definitely see what you mean by having multiple versions being a pain to administer. We do split editing permissions between my department and public works, with neither editing the others features, so maybe two versions would work there. The department head here has used reconcile the first way - push the parent version to the child. Some of this may be the way ESRI sometimes confusingly names or describes things. I've seen the 'main' database described as parent, default, target, etc. 'Layer' means either a feature class, shapefile, etc. in the TOC except when it means a .lyr file. Reconcile in the first sense is also the correct answer to the certification sample question noted above. Oh well, thanks for the help.

I've seen the term 'reconcile' used a couple different ways in ESRI documentation. In one, e.g. the sample questions for certification, it means changes in the parent/target database are pushed to the child/versioned database (I know it's not actually a separate db). In another context, it seems to mean changes a user makes are checked for conflicts before being posted to the parent. Which is it? Thanks.

Is it possible to export delta tables? We're looking at a workflow to provide change only data to another entity on a weekly or monthly basis. If so, what info exactly is in the delta tables? All attributes of the feature created/changed, or something else? Not sure if the delta table keeps the old data or just new data; wondering if we could use the exported delta table with the updated feature to create a feature class to show before/after features. Currently on SDE 10.0 non-versioned, will be upgrading to 10.1 in a few months, versioning undecided. Thanks.

Thanks, good to know. Will help as I figure out how to implement the LGM modularly. Starting with the parcel fabric, will move to addressing after that.
