It appears that the service may be secured? You may need to pass the user credentials in when creating the layer. Maybe?

However, now, my requirement is to use Java SE 1.6 to connect to the map service. I realize that I am unable to use the normal REST type of service calls, instead have to use SOAP protocol using the MapServerBindingStub class. That uses the Java Web ADF which I am not very familiar with. Actually, the SOAP API for Java, also known as ArcGIS Java Web Services (AgsJWS API), and the Java ADF are two completely different solutions. However, both are SOAP-based, not REST. Also, the Java ADF is no longer recommended, and has been deprecated. By the way, if in fact you HAPPEN to need to use a SOAP API for integration with ArcGIS, AgsJWS is certainly a great API. Having said all that, what you would be looking for is the ArcGIS Runtime SDK for Java product. This is the comparable Java REST API that aligns with the Flex and WPF RESTful APIs. The difference however is that this Java API is not intended for use in the "web tier", in Web servers. It is purely a desktop Java client API that connects to ArcGIS Online, Portal and ArcGIS Server services. Another good option for Java developers looking to access ArcGIS services via REST is the ArcGIS Runtime SDK for Android. Does this help?

Nice catch! We need to find out if there is adequate documentation on this somwehere that is hard to find. Certainly not a good user experience to just end up with an unexplainable empty tile package.

No, I don't think this has anything to do with internet connections. Are you making sure that your tile_scheme XML is being used in the tile creation process?

Thanks for sharing these files. I opened the mxd and created a tile package using your custom tiling scheme, using Share Tile Package from the ArcMap menu. I was successful in creating a 5+ Mb tile package. Was this document below helpful to you at all? http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/runtime-java/concepts/index.html#/How_to_create_a_tile_package/01qv00000018000000/

Were you able to successfully install the ArcGIS Engine for Linux first? If there were errors during that install, the chances are very good that the samples will not run.

Merry Christmas to you as well, Carlos! Ah. Forgive me. I see what you are asking for now, I think. I was assuming you needed a one-time check on a single geometry at a time. You need something that determines this condition on a collection of geometries? All at one time? Please confirm. If so, you may need to look at the GeometryService, which takes an array of input geometries for comparison, and does the relationship operation in a one-time call. If you cannot use a remote service in your application, another approach could be to use a geoprocessing task from a GP package, locally, to take an array of geometries as input. I may not be on the right track as to what you are asking. I apologize if that is the case. Thanks!

Hi Carlos: Have you looked at the GeometryEngine object? It exists in both JavaSE and Android SDKs. Here, you'll find the "within" method that determins if one geometry is within another geometry. Is this what you are looking for? I hope this helps.

Here is a quick update. We have seen some positive testing results with GeoServer WMS layers, from using the next release of the SDK coming in a few weeks. We wanted to update you with some positive cheer as we head to the new year, and we are hopeful this 10.1.1 release will address the issue to your satisfaction. Stay tuned.

hello thank you for the insight I have noticed a bug in the API with the JMap toScreenPoint method actually returns a geometry.Point! not a java.awt.Point as documented. There is actually no way of getting around with a solution without this method. did I get myself an unstable release?! It looks like the Javadoc has been corrected for this in the 10.1.1 update, soon to be released.

To follow up on the recommendation I gave, it may prove to be quite difficult to do this. Thank you for pointing this out. The team is looking into your scenario.

I see. Thank you for the attachment. It is possible that you could do the angle calculations you need to do, then create the graphic lines based on those angles and the coordinates, i beleive. So, in your example, you would not need custom symbol objects, but you would just use basic line symbols and draw them use the correct coords, yes? ....or maybe i misinterpreted . Thanks also for your candid feedback regarding the documentation. Yes, we need to keep working on this as a priority. These forums are a great way to comkunicate thibgs like this, and community is certainly KEY...so thanks.

Sounds interesting! As you may know by now, the API for graphic rendering is not extensible, but maybe you can present more details into exactly what you would like to see in the product, from a developer standpoint? Also, I appreciate your comments about the documentation, and we would really value your ideas on what needs to be embellished here. Please feel free to share. Thank you!
