you can't add shapefiles. Otherwise few would pay for Server. You have to either publish the data, or publish it on arcgis.com with an account and then consume the webmap in your application.

Sorry but if you want code that combines the two together you (or someone else) will have to write it (it doesnt already exist) The Javascript API sacrifices the the flashy drag and droppy style of silverlight/flex for more power and more customization. In the end, the product is better, but it takes more work from the developer.

you can mix and match while you are migrating code. One thing of note, you can not set async:true in dojoConfig Until you are completely migrated.

You can't use two basemaps with different tiling schemes in the same application. Once you set a tiling schema for the application that is the only one you can use. If you want to use ESRIs basemaps, you are going to have to change your service to match.

if you are using esri's tiled services the are all in the same coordinate system scale/tile schema If yours is different , you can not overlay them. I.e. you can not reproject tiled layers on the fly If you use your own tile schema as a basemap layer ALL layers in the applicatin must either be in that schema, or be dynamic.

glad you found your answer. To me this is just another example in the dojo jquery argument. I find myself learning solutions to avoid jquery all the time 🙂

symbols are now showing up on their proper location on the map. I had to put in this line of code again (thanks @Odoe!): query.outSpatialReference = map.spatialReference; Thank you all very much! I think next I will need to work out zoom map location from a result grid--but that is a different topic. great! if you could mark either odoe's or my post as the answer (since we each got half, doesnt matter whom) that would be appreciated (just click the check mark on the right).

sp it looks like two issues, spatial reference and symbology. IF they draw the query is good and symbology fixed Now you just need to specify the correct outSpatialReference in the query parameters, as mentioned above
