Are the coordinates and the elevations all in the same units? ie meters or feet Or are the coordinates in decimal degrees? I would suspect that you must be working with projected data and x,y and z must all be the same units

could you zip the shapefile and email it to me at Dan_Patterson AT carleton.ca ....you know what to do with the AT of course...I will have a look at on this end to ensure that it is not a file problem and to check to see if it is a setup issue. I can email the results (if any) back so you don't get held up waiting for a solution

From the ver 10 help files (check 9.3 for equivalent) When using shapefiles, keep in mind that they cannot store null values. Tools or other procedures that create shapefiles from non-shapefile inputs may store or interpret null values as zero. This can lead to unexpected results. See also Geoprocessing considerations for shapefile output. Try querying for values > 0 and run the tool on the selection. Works for me, see attached

version of ArcMap? In 10, Geoprocessing menu, Geoprocessing Options, is the Add Results of geoprocessing operations to the display checked on or off? Have you physically navigated to the output folder to see if there is any output? Other possibilities of none of those apply...do all records contain valid numeric values?

If memory serves, animal movements was for ArcView 3.x not 9.x, so unless they have updated it for ArcGIS, then you are out of luck.

A DEM is probably a floating point grid, hence, there are no fields, but you can still query its "value" as in the attached examples, where a dem was queried for values > 20

right-click on the layer, select Data | Export Data, towards the bottom right, where it says Format, did you select Grid? Then don't give it an extension but ensure that the Name is less than 13 characters, doesn't contain spaces and doesn't begin with a number...also navigate to a folder that doesn't contain spaces either, so it you "stuff" is going to C:documents and settings...that is a big no no. See if the divide by 1000.0 works on a grid, which I assumed you had been working with.

Read the help carefully http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/index.html#//005m000000ms000000.htm but I suspect that you have an integer grid and divided by an integer (aka 1000) which results in an undesireable outcome. So try to divide by a float (aka 1000.0 ) which should result in a floating point grid which will lack a table and may not be what you want afterall

Bruce, interesting point, however, I will have to recheck my benchmarking since the repetitive calls to the searchcursor seemed to be worse than my approach (ie ...SearchCursor(someFC)] ), I will recheck in arcpy to see if there is a speed difference...in the interim, other may steal my code as they see fit. If you have any benchmarking/timing information I would appreciate an update
