Yes, you can edit without versioning your data, see: http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisserver/10.0/help/arcgis_server_dotnet_help/index.html#//0093000015zv000000.htm And yes, version privileges (I'm assuming that's what you mean since you're asking about 'public' and 'protected') matter, see: http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisserver/10.0/help/arcgis_server_dotnet_help/index.html#//009300001630000000.htm

Yes, you can do this. I currently use this set up as my development environment. More specifically, it's a workgroup ArcSDE GDB stored in a SQL Server 2008 Express instance.

Use esri.geometry.geographicToWebMercator() to convert your geometry from decimal degrees to meters so that it can be plotted on a basemap that uses the web mercator projection (wkid 102100, among others). http://help.arcgis.com/en/webapi/javascript/arcgis/help/jsapi/namespace_geometry.htm#geographicToWebMercator The code would be something like this: esri.geometry.geographicToWebMercator(
new esri.geometry.Point(-118.15, 33.80, new esri.SpatialReference({ wkid: 4326 }))
);

Yes, it's possible. This should get you started: http://resources.esri.com/arcgisserver/apis/javascript/arcgis/index.cfm?fa=codeGalleryDetails&scriptID=15699 To sync your maps, listen to the onExtentChange event.

Yes, I've ran into this before. I *think* I reported it as a bug but I don't have a bug ID. I used the solution you're describing; always pass a copy of your extent to setExtent.

You don't need that if statement. Just use your switch statement inside your for loop.

Double check that you're correctly referencing your proxy page. You should see a POST request like this in Firebug's Net tab: http://localhost/proxy.ashx?http://sampleserver3.arcgisonline.com/ArcGIS/rest/services/Geometry/GeometryServer/labelPoints

You're mixing versions...you're using v1.4 of the JS API but hitting a ArcGIS Server 10 geometry service. If you update your ref to the JS API to 2.0, your code works. Use these links: <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="http://serverapi.arcgisonline.com/jsapi/arcgis/2.0/js/dojo/dijit/themes/tundra/tundra.css">
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://serverapi.arcgisonline.com/jsapi/arcgis/?v=2.0" ></script> Also, use esri.config as opposed to esriConfig: http://help.arcgis.com/en/webapi/javascript/arcgis/help/jshelp/inside_defaults.htm Note: "esri.config" is a replacement to "esriConfig" as of version 1.3. If you are using version 1.2 or lower, you should refer to Default API configurations for v1.2 and lower. For version 1.3 or higher, you use "esri.config" in place of "esriConfig". Although "esriConfig" will continue to work with version 1.3, you should update your applications to use "esri.config" instead.
