Jill, There are some differences between services running on ArcGIS Server vs hosted in ArcGIS Online. For the most part, feature servicework the same way. Hosted Map Services are tiled map services. They don't support dynamic mapping like ArcGIS Server map services do. Nor do they directly support queries (for popups/identify) because they are just tiled images, although if you publish features at the same time, the features will be used to support queries. How are you transferring your data? Do you want to create hosted services? You can link your existing ArcGIS Server service via a URL to your "My Content". This will create an item that references your ArcGIS server service. To create a hosted service, you start from ArcMap, compile your data into a map, then publish it. Nancy, You do have enough credits and your subscription hasn't expired, right? You can check the status on the My Organization page. You are only publishing a hosted feature service from desktop and have disabled the map service option? How much data are you trying to publish? Does it fail with a small dataset too? Instead of publishing directly from desktop, you might try the option to "Save a service definition file" instead of "Publish a service". You do the same steps, but instead end up with a Service Definition (SD) file on disk. You can then go to ArcGIS.com and do an Add Item from My Content and browse for this file. Make not of how big the SD file is on disk. You will run into file upload limitations of a browser. If the file size is less than 256mb you're probably ok. The basic viewer displays a Layers menu option that allows you to turn layers on and off. Most of the others don't. All templates are downloadable and can be customized. But you have to host your custom application on your own web server. Thanks, Mike ... View more

We have looked at this from many angles and don't see anything that has changed. So I don't know why your script is working differently. If you don't specify any options, then it should default to Use Definition, which means the sharing set in the SD file being uploaded will be used.
