The values in the measure tool that i am using appear to be about double of what I would expect them to be.  When I calcualte the area of a section it = 1,264 acres instead of the 640 acres in which it should be.  I have tried to change the measurement type from planar to geodesic, etc. but i get the same results.  Please let me know if I need to change the projection or what my issue is.  Thanks

I too get this problem when performing linear measurement.  It is consistently about 40% too high.  When measuring a section line, for example, it measures  at 1.4 miles instead of 1 mile.  I am running ArcGIS 10.1 and this has been happening for all iterations of version 10.  Any help would be appreciated.

Never mind, I got stupid and forgot to measure Geodesic instead of planar.  Ignore the little man behind the curtain...

Hi Tyler/Bjarne,

What coordinate system are you using for the given dataset? What is the extent of your area?

You could use a projection system with True Area (e.g. Mercator)
