Im making a map for my senior thesis that has several different variables. Each layer has a certain value I'm focused on and I want my final map to only display areas with one or more of these features. So in areas that two values overlap the color is darker than one, and three darker than 2 and so on. Can you help me? I have access to online GIS and the actual in chair program.

Use Spatial Join—Help | ArcGIS for Desktop  with a count field then you could symbolize by the count

What if the overlapping data are in the same layer.

Then you will have to set a transparency for the overlaying class value sot the lower bleeds through visually.  In such cases, though, it is better to produce an file that combines the overlaying combinations and symbolizes them separately.  Examine the Overlay Tools to decide what exactly suits your case
