Missing Data after a Merge of shapefiles

I'm new to ArcGIS so I'm hoping I'm just missing something.  Heres my problem.  I have 9 shapefiles that I'm merging into one, but when I do this I'm missing data.  Its very random too.  Any idea to try would be very appreciated.  Thanks.

Did you ever get an answer about what was causing missing data when you merged shapefiles?  I just had the same problem.  Please let me know if you've figured it out.

I'm having a similar problem.  I have several road sections that I want to combine into a single feature.  When I use the merge command under the edit menu, the shape_length field turns to 0 and both lines disappear from the map.  A single feature shows up in the attribute table, but since its length is 0, there's nothing to display.  Any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong?
